Yes—an applied electric potential helped diamonds crystallize in high-pressure laboratory experiments designed to model parts of Earth’s mantle. The results show a possible additional pathway for diamond formation, not proof that electric fields are a major cause of natural diamonds.

What the experiment demonstrated

In a 2021 study, Yuri N. Palyanov and colleagues applied an electrical potential to carbonate and carbonate-silicate melts under high pressure and temperature. Diamond crystallized alongside mantle minerals near the cathode, the negatively charged electrode. The process reduced carbon from carbonate in the melt, producing diamond or graphite in the experimental systems.

The researchers used model materials based on compositions reported for inclusions in natural diamonds. Their experiments therefore tested a proposed chemical mechanism in mantle-like materials; they did not observe diamond formation in Earth’s mantle itself. The paper’s abstract and publication record describe the study.

How closely did the tests resemble mantle conditions?

The experiments reproduced selected pressure, temperature, and compositional features associated with deep-Earth environments. The electrical potential was an experimental control, not a measured natural mantle value.

Factor Experimental conditions What that tells us
Pressure 6.3 and 7.5 GPa, as reported by Palyanov et al. in 2021 High-pressure conditions were created in laboratory apparatus; these values do not establish where or how often the proposed process occurs in nature.
Temperature 1,300–1,600°C, as reported by Palyanov et al. in 2021 The reactions were tested at elevated temperatures relevant to the study’s deep-Earth model.
Applied potential 0.4–1 V, as reported by Palyanov et al. in 2021 An imposed electrical potential drove the experimental process. The natural strength of electric fields in the mantle is not established.
Composition Model carbonate and carbonate-silicate media based on compositions reported for natural-diamond inclusions The materials provide a geochemical model, not a direct sample of a diamond-forming natural event.

The reported ranges and experimental design are described in Palyanov et al.’s 2021 study.

Does this explain how natural diamonds form?

Not by itself. The experiments establish that an applied potential can promote diamond crystallization in the tested melts under the stated conditions. They do not show that comparable electric fields occur widely or strongly enough in the mantle to drive diamond formation on a geologic scale.

The authors identify the central limitation: “published information provides little information concerning possible values for the electrical fields in Earth’s mantle.” That leaves both the natural field strength and the mechanism’s importance uncertain. The finding is best understood as a plausible additional influence to investigate, rather than a replacement for other explanations of diamond formation. Chemistry World’s report on the study likewise presents the result as a proposed new facet, not a settled universal explanation.

Why the isotope results are notable

The study also reported carbon-isotope fractionation in its experimental systems that exceeded the carbonate-graphite equilibrium fractionation the authors expected at the tested temperatures. Palyanov et al. reported average values of 5.4‰ and 5.9‰ in two tested systems, and up to 9.2‰ in an anhydrous carbonate-silicate melt. For comparison, they reported an expected carbonate-graphite equilibrium fractionation of 1.2–1.6‰ at 1,300–1,600°C.

These are results for the study’s particular experimental systems. They may help researchers consider how electrical processes could affect isotope fractionation and carbon cycling, but they should not be treated as typical values for all natural diamonds.

What the finding could change

The authors argue that electric fields should be considered as a possible additional factor in diamond crystallization, mantle mineral formation, carbon-isotope fractionation, and the global carbon cycle. The practical significance depends on a question the experiments cannot answer alone: whether natural mantle environments generate fields of suitable strength and duration. Until that is better constrained, the work broadens the set of mechanisms scientists can test without establishing how common this one is.
