Yes—an electric field can change magnetic order in some atomically thin semiconductors, but it does not act like a miniature magnetic field. A gate changes carrier density, orbital occupation, interlayer coupling, strain, or even ionic composition. Those changes can alter exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropy, allowing a device to favor one magnetic state over another. The clearest demonstration is bilayer chromium triiodide (CrI3), where a gate switched the measured state between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic near a magnetic-field-driven transition.

What electric-field control of magnetism means

In a conventional transistor, a gate voltage controls current by changing the number of mobile charge carriers. In a magnetic 2D semiconductor, the same electrostatic control can also change the interactions that arrange electron spins. The gate may alter which electronic bands are occupied, how orbitals overlap, the energy difference between competing spin configurations, or the coupling between adjacent atomic layers.

The result is usually an indirect magnetic control. The electric field does not supply the torque of an external magnetic field. Instead, it changes the material’s internal energy landscape so that a different magnetic configuration becomes stable or easier to reach. Depending on the device, the observable response may be a change in magnetic order, magnetic anisotropy, coercivity, interlayer alignment, or the stability of two nearly competing states.

“Electric-field control” therefore describes a device-level result, not one universal microscopic mechanism. A back-gated flake with a solid dielectric, an electrolyte-gated device, and a van der Waals heterostructure can all show voltage-dependent magnetism while relying on different combinations of charge, strain, ions, and interfaces.

The main mechanisms

Mechanism What the voltage changes Magnetic consequence Important qualification
Electrostatic carrier modulation Carrier density and orbital occupation in the semiconductor Exchange interactions, magnetic anisotropy, or the relative energy of magnetic states Most closely matches a reversible field effect, but its size depends strongly on the bands, dielectric, thickness, and temperature.
Strain coupling Lattice spacing or crystal symmetry through voltage-induced deformation Magnetoelastic changes to anisotropy and exchange The response is not purely electronic charge accumulation; the mechanical path must be measured or modeled.
Ionic gating or intercalation Mobile ions, chemical composition, and local structure Large changes in carrier density or magnetic bonding Structural or chemical changes can accompany the voltage response, so reversibility and cycling need separate verification.
Interface and interlayer coupling Electrostatic potential, screening, or hybridization at a layer or heterostructure interface Different alignment of spins between layers, or field-driven reorientation The measured magnetism may belong to a coupled stack rather than an isolated monolayer.

Several pathways can operate at once. For example, an electrolyte can accumulate more charge than a conventional dielectric while also exerting chemical or mechanical effects. A credible interpretation identifies the gate geometry, dielectric or electrolyte, layer count, temperature, magnetic-field range, and magnetic observable before assigning the result to a purely electrostatic effect.

How gating changes the microscopic energy balance

Exchange interactions

Magnetic order comes from spin-dependent interactions between electrons. Adding or removing carriers can change which orbitals participate in bonding and how virtual hopping occurs between neighboring atoms. In a narrow-band semiconductor, even a modest shift in occupation can change the balance between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange pathways. The sign and magnitude are material-specific; a gate that favors ferromagnetism in one compound can weaken it in another.

Magnetic anisotropy

Anisotropy determines the direction in which spins prefer to point. Electric fields can modify orbital occupation and spin–orbit-coupling effects, changing whether spins favor an in-plane or out-of-plane direction and how much energy is required to rotate them. A device may therefore show a strong voltage dependence in switching fields without changing the underlying ferro- or antiferromagnetic order.

Interlayer alignment

Layered magnets add another degree of freedom: each layer can be magnetic while neighboring layers align parallel or antiparallel. A gate can change screening, hybridization, or the electrostatic difference between layers, shifting their coupling. This is why a bilayer device can respond to a gate even when the magnetic moments inside each individual layer remain robust.

The clearest demonstration: bilayer CrI3

Bilayer CrI3 is the best-established example in the available evidence. In its ground state, the two layers are antiferromagnetically aligned. Applying a magnetic field drives a metamagnetic transition toward a ferromagnetic alignment. Near that transition, changing the electrostatic gate at a fixed applied magnetic field switched the measured state between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic.

The experiment read the state with magneto-optical Kerr-effect (MOKE) microscopy. MOKE detects how reflected light changes polarization when it interacts with a magnetized sample, providing a local optical signature of the magnetic configuration. The gate did not replace the external field; it shifted the balance between states so that the same field could produce either alignment depending on gate voltage.

What happens at zero magnetic field

The same CrI3 study reported two time-reversal-related layered antiferromagnetic states at zero field. Their spins are locked to opposite layers, a configuration often described as spin-layer locking. The MOKE signal varied approximately linearly with gate voltage, but the two states had opposite slopes.

This observation matters because it shows that a gate response is not always a simple “more magnetization” or “less magnetization” knob. The voltage-dependent optical signal can reveal which layer carries which spin orientation and how the readout couples to a layered antiferromagnet. A device can therefore have zero net magnetization while still displaying a measurable, gate-dependent magnetic contrast.

What a gate-controlled device actually contains

A practical device normally includes a thin magnetic semiconductor, electrodes, a gate dielectric or electrolyte, and an optical or electrical readout. Layer number and encapsulation matter because air-sensitive 2D crystals can degrade, while screening limits how deeply a gate field penetrates. The relevant operating conditions should be reported together:

  • Gate configuration: top gate, bottom gate, dual gate, or electrolyte gate.
  • Electrostatic environment: dielectric material and thickness, or the identity and operating range of an electrolyte.
  • Magnetic conditions: temperature, field magnitude and direction, and sweep history.
  • Sample structure: monolayer, bilayer, thicker flake, doped crystal, or heterostructure.
  • Readout: MOKE, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), transport, or a combination.

Without these details, “voltage-controlled magnetism” is too broad to compare across papers. A gate voltage that is effective in a bilayer at cryogenic temperature may have no comparable effect in a monolayer, a thicker sample, or a different dielectric.

How researchers measure the magnetic response

MOKE and MCD

MOKE microscopy maps magnetic contrast optically and can resolve domains or layer-sensitive signals in a small flake. MCD measures the difference in absorption of opposite circular polarizations and is also widely used for 2D magnets. Optical probes are valuable when the material is thin, fragile, or difficult to contact electrically.

Electrical transport

Transport measurements can reveal gate-dependent resistance, anomalous Hall signals, or other signatures linked to magnetic order. They offer a route toward transistor-like devices, but narrow-band magnetic semiconductors often localize carriers. In that regime, a gate may change the optical magnetic signal without producing a clean field-effect transistor response.

Why cross-checking is essential

One probe rarely identifies the mechanism by itself. Optical contrast can be affected by layer interference, strain, or changes in absorption; transport can be affected by contacts, localization, and leakage. Claims about coupled electric and magnetic orders are strongest when optical, electrical, structural, and magnetic measurements agree. A 2026 review recommends cross-correlated magneto-opto-electric measurements for establishing 2D multiferroic behavior rather than relying on a single signal.

How to distinguish charge, strain, and ionic effects

Tests for an electrostatic explanation

  • Use a known dielectric thickness and estimate the induced charge from its capacitance.
  • Check whether the magnetic response follows gate voltage reversibly and with limited hysteresis after removing the voltage.
  • Compare top- and bottom-gate configurations to test whether the response depends on field direction or layer proximity.
  • Measure leakage current and temperature rise so electrical artifacts are not mistaken for magnetic switching.

Tests for strain coupling

  • Monitor lattice spacing or Raman modes while sweeping the gate.
  • Compare devices on substrates with different mechanical compliance.
  • Look for a magnetic response that tracks deformation even when the estimated carrier change is small.

Tests for ionic or chemical changes

  • Record charge and discharge cycles and test whether the original state returns after removing the gate bias.
  • Inspect composition and structure before and after operation when large changes occur.
  • Separate slow drift, threshold behavior, and irreversible switching from a fast, reversible field effect.

These tests do not require one mechanism to exclude all others. They establish which contributions are likely to coexist and prevent an ionic or strain-mediated result from being labeled purely electrostatic.

What can and cannot be generalized

CrI3 is a demonstration, not a universal recipe

The CrI3 result applies to a particular bilayer, a particular magnetic-field-driven transition, and a specific optical measurement. It demonstrates that gating can select between magnetic states under the right conditions; it does not establish that every 2D semiconductor can be switched at room temperature or at zero applied field.

Doped black phosphorus and the 2025 room-temperature report

A separate 2025 report described gate-tunable ferromagnetism in cobalt-doped black phosphorus devices, with operation reported up to room temperature. That is an engineered, doped material system. Its result should not be read as evidence that pristine black phosphorus, or pristine 2D magnets generally, has room-temperature gate-controlled ferromagnetism.

No common “most controllable” material

Reviews of van der Waals magnets discuss multiferroicity, spin–charge correlations, electrical gating, and field-driven reorientation, but the available evidence does not provide a normalized ranking of which material is most controllable. Device geometry, dielectric, thickness, temperature, magnetic field, and readout differ too much for a single cross-material score.

A practical framework for comparing two devices

When evaluating competing demonstrations, record the following in one table rather than comparing gate voltage alone:

Comparison axis Question to ask
Material and thickness Is it pristine, doped, alloyed, monolayer, bilayer, or thicker?
Magnetic transition Is the gate changing ferro/antiferromagnetic order, anisotropy, coercivity, or interlayer alignment?
Gate technology What dielectric or electrolyte is used, and is the gate top, bottom, or dual?
Proposed coupling Does evidence support charge, strain, ions, interfaces, or a combination?
Operating conditions What temperature and external magnetic-field range are required?
Probe and reversibility Which signal changes, how quickly, and does it return after cycling?
Demonstration level Is this an isolated laboratory flake or an integrated device with repeatable operation?

This framework prevents a low-voltage ionic response from being compared directly with a small-signal dielectric gate, or a cryogenic proof of principle from being presented as a practical room-temperature memory technology.

Why this matters for spintronics

Voltage control could reduce the energy required to write or reconfigure a magnetic state because a gate need not drive a large current through the magnetic layer. Layer-selective control could also enable compact sensors, reconfigurable spin filters, nonvolatile elements, and devices in which electric and magnetic information are coupled.

Those applications remain research goals. The demonstrations described here do not establish a widely available commercial memory product. Before integration, a device must show repeatability, retention, endurance, low leakage, controlled switching speed, operation over a useful temperature range, and compatibility with fabrication and encapsulation processes. None of those requirements follows automatically from observing a gate-dependent MOKE signal.

Common interpretation errors

  • Calling the gate a magnetic field: the gate changes material parameters; an external magnetic field directly couples to magnetic moments.
  • Assuming every voltage response is charge-only: strain, ions, heating, and interface effects may contribute.
  • Equating optical contrast with net magnetization: layered antiferromagnets can have zero net moment yet produce a layer-sensitive optical signal.
  • Generalizing from one compound: CrI3 and cobalt-doped black phosphorus represent distinct systems.
  • Ignoring measurement conditions: temperature, field history, dielectric, thickness, and probe determine what “switching” means.
  • Treating a single measurement as proof of multiferroicity: coupled electric and magnetic orders require independent, cross-correlated evidence.

The bottom line

Electric fields control magnetism in 2D semiconductors by changing the electronic, structural, ionic, or interfacial conditions that set magnetic energy scales. Bilayer CrI3 shows the principle clearly: near its metamagnetic transition, an electrostatic gate switches between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states at a fixed magnetic field, while zero-field MOKE reveals layer-locked antiferromagnetic states with opposite gate responses. Other materials may respond through different mechanisms, and a 2025 report in cobalt-doped black phosphorus extends the idea to an engineered system reported up to room temperature. The reliable conclusion is therefore conditional: gate control is real, but its mechanism, reversibility, temperature range, and usefulness must be established for each material and device.
