Researchers built a soft, eel-inspired power source by stacking hydrogels that use salt concentration gradients to generate electricity. In a 2017 Nature study, thousands of gel compartments produced 110 volts, but the system’s high internal resistance limited its output to 50 microwatts. It was a laboratory prototype—not a consumer battery or a demonstrated implant.
How does the hydrogel device imitate an electric eel?
Electric eels generate electrical signals with specialized cells called electrocytes. Ion gradients across each cell’s membrane create a voltage when ion channels open, and the eel’s cells are arranged so their voltages add together.
The artificial version replaces those cells with four hydrogel formulations: a high-salinity gel, a low-salinity gel, a cation-selective gel, and an anion-selective gel. When arranged in contact, the gels form ionically conductive paths and concentration gradients across the selective membranes. A tetrameric unit combines the four gel types; stacking units in series adds their voltages. The researchers described this design in their 2017 Nature paper.
What did the researchers demonstrate?
The team tested different ways to assemble and activate the gel compartments. The reported figures describe laboratory configurations in that 2017 study, not a current commercial product.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Configuration | Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Tetrameric gel cell, open circuit | 130–185 mV per cell | Voltage measured without a load drawing current. |
| 2,449 gels in a printed serpentine stack | 110 V and 50 μW | The large voltage did not translate into high usable power; internal resistance constrained output. |
| Folded-film geometry | 27 ± 2 mW m−2 per tetrameric gel cell | Thin films were brought into synchronized contact, reducing resistance compared with the serpentine layout. |
| Tri-layer contact lens demonstration | 80 mV | An early demonstration, not evidence of a practical powered lens. |
The folded-film cell’s reported power density was still two to three orders of magnitude below the eel electrocyte layers used for comparison in the study. The authors identified thinner films, greater ion permeability, and lower-resistance compartments as possible ways to improve performance.
Why does 110 volts not mean it could power a device?
Voltage describes electrical potential, not how much current a source can deliver. The 110 V figure came from 2,449 gel compartments connected in series; the same configuration produced only 50 μW because its internal resistance was high. A high open-circuit voltage, measured without a load, is not by itself evidence that a source can run electronics reliably.

The folded-film geometry improved the reported power density by lowering resistance relative to the serpentine arrangement, but the study’s comparison with eel electrocyte layers still showed a substantial performance gap. The paper therefore describes an interesting soft-power concept, not a substitute for a conventional battery.

Charging from bodily ionic gradients was discussed as a possible future direction; using metabolic energy was a more ambitious prospect. Neither approach was demonstrated as a way to recharge an implanted device.

The study proposed implantable power sources, sensor- or display-equipped contact lenses, and soft robotics as possible future applications. The lens result—80 mV from one tri-layer lens—was an early demonstration, not a working consumer product or evidence that a lens could power a useful display or sensor.

The materials were described as soft, flexible, and transparent, and as potentially biocompatible. Those properties do not establish clinical safety, long-term durability, or a functioning implant. The researchers identified fabrication durability and efficiency as development challenges; implantable recharging remained a future challenge, as discussed in Chemistry World’s contemporaneous report.
