Electric cars usually lose range on a fast motorway journey and in cold weather, but there is no single percentage that applies to every vehicle. Speed raises aerodynamic energy demand, while cold conditions add heating and battery-temperature-management loads. The combined effect depends on the car’s efficiency, heating system, speed, temperature, wind, hills, tyres, payload and whether the battery and cabin were preconditioned.
A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory result found that all-electric vehicles can experience a decrease in fuel economy of nearly 40% in cold temperatures. That is a controlled test result, not a promise that every EV will lose 40% of real-world range. Treat the number on the dashboard and the published rating as starting points, then plan a fast, cold trip with a sensible charging margin.
Why motorway speed uses more EV energy
At urban speeds, an electric car spends more time slowing down and can recover some of that energy through regenerative braking. On a motorway, the car generally travels continuously, so there are fewer opportunities to recover energy. The dominant additional demand is aerodynamic drag: air resistance rises rapidly as speed increases, and the motor must supply energy continuously to overcome it.

That is why a car can show a substantially lower consumption figure at a steady motorway speed than on a slower mixed route, even when the distance is identical. Rapid acceleration, heavy loads and significant climbs add further demand. A strong headwind has a similar effect to increasing the car’s air speed, while a tailwind can reduce it.

Speed is not the same as distance
Driving faster does not automatically mean the trip takes enough less time to offset the extra electricity used. The battery supplies power at a higher rate, and the distance covered per kilowatt-hour usually falls as speed rises. A lower, steady speed normally improves efficiency, although traffic, safety, legal limits and journey time still matter.
What the DOE speed analysis means
A 2024 DOE technical report found that the net impacts of speed and ambient temperature on battery-electric-vehicle range begin to converge as speed rises above 40 mph across the temperatures it analyzed. This is an observation from that analysis, not a universal threshold at which cold weather stops mattering. Heating demand and battery behavior can still reduce range on a cold motorway trip above 40 mph, and a particular vehicle may respond differently.
How cold weather reduces range
Cold affects an EV through several loads at once. The cabin needs heat for comfort and window demisting, and the battery may need thermal management to operate efficiently and accept regenerative braking or rapid charging. Cold air is also denser, increasing aerodynamic work at a given road speed. Tyre pressure, road surface and weather can change at the same time, making a winter journey unlike a mild-weather test.

Cabin heating is usually the largest winter load
The DOE states that HVAC power is the biggest contributor to reduced battery-electric-vehicle range in winter conditions. A vehicle using electric resistance heat turns battery electricity directly into heat. A heat-pump system moves heat and typically uses less electricity for the same cabin-heating task in many conditions.
The DOE’s 2024 technical report illustrates the difference with a system-power comparison at 20°F: a heat pump can reduce total HVAC system power draw by 38%. This is a comparison of HVAC power, not a 38% increase in total vehicle range. Heat pumps also become less effective in extreme cold and may need resistance heating or other assistance.

The nearly 40% figure needs context
In December 2020, the DOE reported that all-electric vehicles can experience a decrease in fuel economy of nearly 40% in cold temperatures. The result came from controlled laboratory testing. “Fuel economy” in this context describes how efficiently the vehicle uses energy; real-world range also depends on usable battery energy, route, speed, wind, traffic, heating settings and the driver’s starting and finishing charge levels.
Consequently, the figure is useful as a warning about winter sensitivity, but it is not a guaranteed loss for your model. One EV may lose less, another more, and the same EV can produce different results on a short urban trip, a long motorway run or a journey with a headwind and heavy payload.

Published U.S. fuel-economy and range estimates are derived from standardized laboratory data. The DOE explains that five controlled test cycles are used for new light-duty vehicles:

Regulators adjust the laboratory results for factors that the cycles cannot fully represent, including wind, hills and road conditions. A window-sticker estimate is therefore a standardized comparison, not a guarantee for a particular motorway speed, outside temperature or heating setting. Your trip computer is also an estimate: it often uses recent consumption and may change its prediction as weather, speed and terrain change.
How to estimate the effect before setting off
There is no defensible universal equation that converts a published range into an exact winter motorway range without vehicle-specific data. Use the following process instead.

- Start with the usable charge. Note the battery percentage and the vehicle’s current predicted range. Do not assume the displayed number is a fixed amount of energy; it is a forecast that changes with consumption.
- Match the prediction to the route. Identify motorway distance, likely cruising speed, climbs, traffic, charging stops and the destination’s weather. A route with hills, strong wind or a heavy load deserves more reserve than a flat, sheltered route.
- Account for temperature and heating. Expect greater uncertainty near or below freezing, particularly on a short trip where warming the cabin and battery is a large share of total energy.
- Use a conservative charging plan. Select a charging stop before the predicted range becomes marginal. Leave a buffer for a detour, slower traffic, a headwind, a charger that is busy or unavailable, and the energy needed to reach an alternative site.
- Recalculate during the journey. Compare actual consumption with the car’s projected consumption over the next section. If energy use is higher than expected, reduce speed where safe and add a charging stop rather than relying on the original estimate.
Practical ways to preserve winter motorway range
Precondition while connected to the charger
Where the vehicle supports preconditioning, schedule it while the car is still plugged in. DOE guidance recommends warming the cabin and, where the vehicle manages it, the battery before departure while charging. Electricity used for this initial warm-up then comes from the grid rather than reducing the starting battery charge. Follow the vehicle’s instructions because the available functions and timing vary by model.

Use sheltered parking when possible
Covered parking can reduce exposure to very low temperatures and weather. It does not eliminate winter consumption, but it may make the initial warm-up less demanding. A garage, carport or other sheltered location can also help keep windows clear and reduce departure delays.
Choose the heating system when buying, not as an aftermarket add-on
A heat pump is an integrated vehicle feature, not a generic accessory that can be added to any EV. If winter efficiency matters, check the exact trim and market specification before purchase. Confirm whether the system is standard, optional or unavailable, and remember that its advantage is condition-dependent and smaller in extreme cold.
Reduce speed smoothly
A modest reduction in cruising speed can cut aerodynamic demand without requiring uncomfortable driving. Hold a steady speed, avoid unnecessary rapid acceleration and use the car’s efficiency or energy display to see the effect. Follow posted limits and traffic conditions; efficiency never overrides safe driving.
Manage comfort and visibility intelligently
Do not treat switching the cabin heater off as the only winter strategy. Keep the windscreen clear, maintain a safe temperature and use the vehicle’s seat or steering-wheel heating if those controls allow comfortable warmth with less cabin-air heating. The right balance depends on the car and the occupants. Never compromise demisting, visibility or safe control to chase a range number.

Check the factors that travel with the weather
- Set tyre pressures to the manufacturer’s cold-weather specification and recheck them as temperatures change.
- Remove unnecessary cargo and roof equipment; extra mass affects acceleration and roof-mounted items increase drag.
- Allow for headwinds, rain, snow, slush and rough surfaces, all of which can raise consumption.
- Expect a loaded car and a route with sustained climbs to use more energy than a lightly loaded, level route.
Understanding the combined motorway-and-cold effect
Speed and temperature are separate influences that can arrive together. At high speed, aerodynamic demand is already large. In cold weather, heating and battery management add a largely time-based load, so a long motorway journey gives that load more opportunity to consume energy. A short trip can show an especially poor efficiency figure because warm-up energy is spread over fewer miles.
The same displayed range loss can have different causes. If consumption rises immediately after leaving a cold, parked car, cabin and battery warm-up may dominate. If it stays high during a fast, steady section, aerodynamic drag, wind and road conditions may be the larger contributors. If the prediction improves after slowing down, speed was a significant factor; if it does not, temperature, terrain or wind may still be controlling the result.
A decision framework for comparing EVs or trip scenarios
There is no fair universal ranking of vehicles from the available evidence. Compare like with like using these axes:

When a manufacturer publishes a winter or highway figure, check the test conditions before treating it as a promise. A model-specific official manual or efficiency guide can also reveal whether battery preconditioning, scheduled departure and heat-pump operation are supported.

Using the advertised range as a motorway guarantee
Why it fails: the rating combines standardized cycles and regulatory adjustments, while your route may be faster, colder, hillier or windier.

Better approach: use the rating as a comparison baseline, then plan from recent consumption and live weather for the actual journey.
Applying the 40% laboratory result to every EV
Why it fails: the DOE’s nearly 40% result is a controlled-laboratory fuel-economy finding, not a universal real-world range forecast.
Better approach: treat it as evidence that cold can be substantial, and build a vehicle- and route-specific reserve.
Assuming a heat pump eliminates winter losses
Why it fails: a heat pump reduces HVAC power in many conditions but becomes less effective in extreme cold, and it cannot remove aerodynamic, tyre, wind or terrain losses.
Better approach: verify the feature on the exact vehicle and combine it with plugged-in preconditioning and sensible speed.
Planning to arrive with no margin
Why it fails: a changed route, stronger headwind, queue at a charger or unexpected heating demand can turn a marginal estimate into a stressful stop.
Better approach: identify an earlier charging option and keep enough reserve to reach it safely.
