ELDEN RING has no easy-mode setting. Its open world instead gives you ways to change the circumstances around a difficult fight: retreat, explore another route, strengthen your character or equipment, use available summons, and return when you are better prepared. That flexibility can make the challenge more manageable, but it does not remove the game’s demanding combat or guarantee that a particular encounter will feel easy.
Does ELDEN RING have an easy mode?
No. The game does not offer a difficulty slider or an options-menu button that switches on an easy mode. Bandai Namco Europe states that difficulty is not adjustable through a menu setting in its official discussion of the game’s challenge.

That distinction matters: ELDEN RING gives players ways to prepare for and approach challenges differently, rather than selecting a lower preset. The publisher describes tools such as exploring for equipment and upgrades, using Spirit Ashes, crafting consumables, avoiding powerful enemies, and seeking help from other players. These change your options and circumstances; they do not change a chosen difficulty value.
There is no official numeric difficulty score or completion-rate statistic in the sources discussed here. How hard the game feels will depend on the encounter, your build and equipment, the approach you choose, and your own experience with its combat. It is more useful to understand the available choices than to expect one universal rating to predict your experience.

What does “open world” mean in ELDEN RING?
Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki has cautioned that “open world” can mean different things. In a 2019 interview, he described ELDEN RING as FromSoftware’s approach to “a game with a large, open field to play in,” with greater scale and freedom of exploration than the studio’s earlier work. In practice, that field is not just empty space between bosses. The publisher describes broad landscapes containing caves, crypts, forts and ruins, as well as larger “legacy dungeons” such as Stormveil Castle. These areas provide different kinds of places to explore and challenges to tackle. Many legacy dungeons have multiple entrances, and hidden paths and alternate routes can reward looking beyond the most obvious way forward, according to Bandai Namco’s overview of the game.
The result is a world with connected challenges rather than a single uninterrupted boss corridor. You can choose what to investigate and, in many situations, when to face a particular threat. Miyazaki described the goal as letting players “enjoy the game in their own way” and explore “at their own pace” in a 2022 PlayStation.Blog interview.

How does exploration change the difficulty?
Exploration gives you alternatives when a fight is going badly. In a more linear sequence, reaching a difficult encounter may leave few immediate options except to keep attempting it. ELDEN RING’s broader structure can let you leave, find another route or activity, and return after gathering useful equipment, upgrades or other aids.

That does not mean every major obstacle can be skipped forever. Bandai Namco says players can tackle challenges in a preferred order, while still needing sufficient skill or build proficiency to progress between major areas. The useful distinction is between choosing when and how to engage and being able to ignore every challenge outright.
Miyazaki’s advice to newcomers is consistent with that structure: if you reach an impasse, you can return later rather than repeatedly forcing the same attempt. He specifically described the freedom to “come back to something later” instead of “bang[ing] their head against a wall over and over.” That is a design option, not a promise that returning will automatically make a boss easy.
What should you do when a boss or enemy feels too strong?
Use the open world as a decision point. Before repeating an encounter, decide whether you want to keep learning it now or change one of the conditions around it. The alternatives below are approaches within the game, not formal difficulty modes.

For a practical sequence, first stop and ask whether the problem is that you have not yet learned the encounter or that you are entering it without enough preparation. If you want to continue, focus on the fight. If you want to change the conditions, leave, explore, look for an alternate route or strengthen your setup, then choose whether to try again. The game’s design supports both decisions; neither is a failure to play it correctly.

How can you prepare without changing a difficulty setting?
Bandai Namco identifies several in-world ways to improve your options. Exploration can uncover equipment, upgrades, Spirit Ashes and other aids; the publisher also points to weapon improvement, healing, crafted consumables, stealth, Torrent and multiplayer assistance. The exact usefulness of any one aid depends on the encounter and your chosen character setup, so these are tools to consider rather than a guaranteed recipe.
Review your character and equipment
Look at your build and equipment before assuming the only answer is another attempt with everything unchanged. The publisher describes character builds, equipment and weapon upgrades as part of how players can approach challenges. If you have found a weapon or upgrade that better fits your intended approach, improving your equipment can be one way to prepare before returning.
Make use of healing and consumables
Healing and consumables are part of the preparation choices the publisher highlights. Exploration can reveal items, and the game also lets players craft consumables. If you have access to useful supplies, consider whether you are going into the encounter with them and whether they fit the way you intend to play. The available sources do not establish a single best item or build for every boss, so a universal shopping list would be misleading.

Spirit Ashes and help from other players provide support options, rather than a menu difficulty adjustment. The publisher lists Spirit Ashes among the aids that exploration can uncover, while multiplayer gives players another way to seek assistance. Whether a particular support option is available depends on the situation; do not assume every encounter offers the same help.

Use the environment and alternative movement
Some situations may allow you to use stealth, terrain or Torrent instead of moving directly into a fight. Bandai Namco specifically presents these as ways to handle strong enemies or move through the world. Their usefulness is situational: the key is to notice that the game may allow a different approach, not to expect every enemy to be bypassed in the same way.

Use a simple test: is another attempt likely to teach you something, or are you repeating the same approach without progress? If you are learning the encounter and want to continue, pressing on is a reasonable choice. If you have reached an impasse, the director’s guidance and the game’s structure both support leaving and returning later.
- Stay and engage if you want to focus on the fight and believe you can adjust your approach during it.
- Explore elsewhere if you want to find another route or investigate areas that may offer useful equipment, upgrades or aids.
- Prepare first if you have identified a change to your build, weapon, healing or consumables that you want to make.
- Seek support if you would rather use Spirit Ashes or multiplayer assistance where available.
This is a choice about pacing, not a hidden test of whether you are “good enough.” Miyazaki’s stated aim was to let players explore at their own pace, and his advice for reaching an impasse was to come back later. The game leaves room for you to decide whether the next useful step is another attempt or a change of circumstances.

Does the open world make the game easy?
No. The open world makes the challenge more flexible, not automatically easy. It expands the ways to respond when you are stuck, including postponing a fight, exploring, changing preparation and seeking support. But the publisher also says progress between major areas still calls for sufficient skill or build proficiency. No source here establishes a numeric measure that would justify calling the game easy or hard for every player.
A more accurate expectation is that the game asks you to engage with its combat while giving you choices about timing and approach. If you prefer to confront every obstacle immediately, you can do that. If you would rather explore and return later, the design makes room for that too.
