Egan-Jones Ratings Co. argues that finance has become a larger part of the U.S. economy while global trade influence has shifted toward China. Its August 26, 2026 analysis warns that mobile capital and geopolitical shocks could expose a gap between America’s financial-market strength and its position in world trade. The figures support a case for watching that gap—not a forecast that U.S. financial leadership is about to end.
What Egan-Jones says about finance’s growing place in the U.S. economy
Egan-Jones says finance and insurance accounted for 2.8% of U.S. GDP in 1950 and roughly 8% at the time of its August 26, 2026 release. It also says the sector’s share of domestic corporate profits reached nearly 38% at a peak in 2002. These are the firm’s reported figures; the republication does not identify the underlying datasets or calculation methods.
| Indicator | Egan-Jones figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Finance and insurance share of U.S. GDP | 2.8% in 1950; roughly 8% at the August 26, 2026 release | A reported increase in the sector’s share of economic output; the release does not specify the underlying series or method. |
| Finance’s share of domestic corporate profits | Nearly 38% at a 2002 peak | A historical peak, not a claim that the sector held that share in 2026. The release does not specify the profit measure or calculation. |
| Harvard seniors entering finance | 21% of the Class of 2025 entering the workforce | Egan-Jones describes finance as the largest single destination. The release does not identify the recruiting dataset or define the comparison groups. |
| Pay premium associated with finance | 195% | Egan-Jones reports this premium but does not state the comparison wage, population, or method, so it cannot be read as a universal salary difference. |
The recruiting figures add a talent argument to the economic one: finance may attract graduates because of the earnings available in the sector. But the 195% figure is especially difficult to interpret without a stated comparison group, and a Harvard class is not a measure of the entire U.S. workforce.

Egan-Jones says the number of countries trading more with China than with the United States rose from 33 in 2000 to 151 by the release date; it says 57 traded more with the United States at that point. The release does not define the trade measure or identify its country-level data source, so these counts should be treated as the firm’s comparison rather than independently verified totals.

- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
The firm’s central distinction is that greater trade ties with China do not automatically mean financial capital has shifted there to the same degree. It points to the S&P 500 having “quintupled” since the eve of the financial crisis while the Shanghai Composite remained below its 2007 peak. Egan-Jones does not give an exact start and end date, return calculation, or comparison of dividends and currency effects in the release. The market contrast therefore illustrates its argument; it is not a complete measure of the relative depth or influence of the two financial systems.
Trade relationships, equity-market performance, and financial-system influence are related but distinct. The country counts concern trade; the index comparison concerns share prices; neither alone establishes where global capital is managed, settled, financed, or held.

How a mobile finance industry can change the risk
Egan-Jones argues that finance can manage much larger pools of assets without a proportional increase in staffing, and that deposits and other financial flows can move quickly. It cites Silicon Valley Bank as an example of rapid deposit flight. The point is about the speed and scale at which financial activity can shift, not a claim that all financial assets or institutions are equally mobile.
That mobility matters to the report’s broader thesis: if financial activity is concentrated in a sector and can relocate or reprice quickly, changes in confidence, regulation, market access, or geopolitical risk may have effects beyond the immediate institution. The release does not quantify how much activity could move, where it would go, or on what timetable.

Why Egan-Jones brings up Amsterdam, London, and New York
The release presents Amsterdam, London, and New York as examples of financial centers that rose alongside broader trade or economic power. Egan-Jones uses this sequence to support the idea that financial leadership can follow real economic influence. It does not provide detailed historical sourcing or establish that the pattern is a rule; these examples are context for its argument, not proof that financial prominence must shift from one country to another on a predictable schedule.
Why Taiwan appears in the analysis
Egan-Jones identifies a Taiwan Strait crisis as a possible trigger for rapid market repricing. It reports that announced U.S. Navy transits of the strait fell from a trailing-12-month peak of 16 in 2021 to 2 by the release date. The release does not explain the full counting method or establish that transit frequency predicts conflict. The figure is a geopolitical indicator cited by the firm, not a forecast of military action or market losses.

The connection to finance is conditional: a geopolitical shock could change investors’ assessment of risk and affect markets or capital flows. The release does not estimate the likelihood, timing, or size of such an effect.
What investors and risk managers can monitor
Egan-Jones names three indicators for tracking whether international financial influence is changing. They are signals to observe, not a validated forecasting model.
Best Value
- The renminbi’s share of trade finance: A rising share would be relevant to the question of whether China’s trade role is increasingly accompanied by use of its currency in financing trade.
- Foreign participation in U.S. Treasury auctions: Changes in participation could inform analysis of overseas demand for U.S. government debt. The release does not specify a threshold that would constitute a shift.
- Alternatives to SWIFT: Their adoption could indicate whether payment activity is diversifying across networks. The existence of an alternative alone would not show that it has displaced SWIFT at meaningful scale.
Read together with trade data and market performance, these indicators can help distinguish a change in commercial relationships from a change in financial infrastructure or investor demand. Egan-Jones does not publish a combined score or trigger level for them.
What the analysis establishes—and what it does not
The August 26, 2026 Egan-Jones analysis makes a clear case for monitoring the relationship between finance’s reported domestic weight, China’s growing trade connections, and the mobility of capital. Its figures and comparisons are attributed claims from Egan-Jones, republished by The AI Journal with PR Newswire distribution. The release does not identify underlying methods for several key statistics, and the historical and market comparisons are not enough on their own to establish a transfer of financial leadership.
For readers, the practical takeaway is to keep three questions separate: how much economic activity finance represents, how trade ties are distributed, and how much influence each country has over capital markets and financial infrastructure. The report raises risks around the interaction of those forces; it does not predict imminent U.S. decline.
