Video editing shapes user experience by deciding what viewers see, when they see it, how shots relate, and whether essential information is accessible. It can guide attention and clarify meaning, but no single editing pace or style improves every video: the right choices depend on the format, audience, and task.
How editing helps viewers understand a video
Viewers make sense of a sequence, not just of isolated shots. The order and duration of shots, and the transitions between them, can help clarify a relationship or make it harder to follow. A 2018 study of children and adults found that attention during video viewing relates to sequential comprehension of montage as well as to salient visual features. The PNAS study supports treating shot order as part of communication, rather than as decoration.
For a tutorial, for example, an edit can show a step, then its result, so viewers can connect action and outcome. For a story, shot order can shape how viewers interpret what happened. In either case, a cut is useful when it supports the viewer’s understanding of the sequence.

How cuts and pacing affect attention
Editing can direct attention, but more cuts do not automatically produce a better experience. In a 2025 analysis of 2,520 viewing experiences across 42 public service announcements, study authors reported that scene cuts boosted attention, while visual complexity had a delayed negative effect on attentional synchrony. These findings apply to the study’s PSA viewing context; they do not establish that adding cuts improves attention, comprehension, or satisfaction in every kind of video. The study in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science examined attention, not a universal measure of user experience.

Pacing should give viewers enough time to process the information relevant to their task. A rapid sequence may suit an energetic montage, while instructions that introduce unfamiliar steps may need longer shots. There is no evidence-based universal cut rate that works across genres, audiences, and purposes.
When continuity and immersion matter
A cut or dissolve can help orient viewers, but a transition can also interrupt spatial or narrative continuity. A 2025 experiment with 42 participants compared unedited, hard-cut, and dissolve-edited versions of a VR film. Participants rated the unedited version highest on the study’s visual-attention measure and emotional-immersion ratings; 75% rated that unedited film “highly immersive.” The result is specific to that VR film and sample—not a general instruction to avoid editing. The Frontiers in Psychology study is a reminder to consider whether an edit supports or disrupts the experience a particular format is meant to create.

How accessible editing improves access to information
Accessibility is part of the viewing experience: viewers can miss information when speech, meaningful sounds, or important visual details are not available in a form they can use. W3C recommends planning media accessibility from the start of a project, including captions, transcripts, audio description, sign languages when needed, and an accessible player. W3C’s media accessibility guidance treats these choices as production concerns, not finishing touches.
Captions: convey speech and relevant sounds
Captions provide a synchronized text alternative for speech and relevant non-speech audio. Their timing and placement matter: captions should not obscure meaningful visual information. Editors may need to reserve clear space in the composition and check that text stays readable against changing backgrounds. See W3C’s guidance on prerecorded captions.

Audio description: communicate essential visual details
Audio description conveys visual information that the soundtrack does not already communicate, such as actions, scene changes, or on-screen text. It can be integrated into the main script or provided in an alternate version. Description should fit into pauses without covering dialogue or meaningful sounds. W3C’s prerecorded audio-description guidance explains the relevant accessibility criterion; its practical guidance on describing visual information covers what may need to be conveyed.

Compare versions against the video’s actual goal rather than assuming that a busier or smoother edit is inherently better. Attention, comprehension, immersion, accessibility, and satisfaction are distinct outcomes, and the studies above do not establish a universal numerical target for any of them.

- Comprehension: Can viewers follow the sequence and understand the intended relationship between shots?
- Attention: Does the edit direct attention to relevant content without unnecessary visual complexity?
- Continuity: Do the cuts help viewers stay oriented, or disrupt spatial or narrative coherence?
- Pacing: Is there enough time to process information for the intended task?
- Accessibility: Are speech and relevant sounds captioned, are captions clear of important visuals, and are essential visual details described?
- Goal fit: Can instructional viewers understand and act on the information? Does an entertainment edit support the intended narrative and emotional experience?
These are practical evaluation questions, not guarantees that a given edit will improve a metric by a predictable amount. The available evidence does not quantify a general improvement in user experience attributable to editing or provide one validated formula for entertainment, marketing, instruction, and product demonstrations.
