Microsoft Edge reveals some installation metadata when it checks for extension updates, while an extension’s permissions determine what the extension itself can read or change. Edge’s update services can receive a list of installed extensions; requests for extensions obtained from the Chrome Web Store include the extension ID, version, and information about Edge. Separately, host and device permissions can let an extension inspect websites, alter page content, access hardware, or communicate with software on your computer. Neither an update check nor a permission by itself proves misuse, but both identify privacy exposure you should evaluate.

The safest approach is to identify where each extension came from, review its requested access against its advertised job, read the developer’s privacy policy, and restrict site access wherever Edge allows it. Managed work or school devices require extra caution because administrator-installed extensions can ignore a user’s site-access toggle.

What Edge sends when extensions check for updates

Extension updating is a network operation, not a purely local event. Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation says the Edge update service receives a list of installed extensions. For an extension installed from the Chrome Web Store, the normal update request goes to that store and includes the extension identifier, its version, and information about Microsoft Edge.

Those fields are update metadata. They can reveal which extension is installed and which version is running, but the documented information is not the same as sending the contents of every webpage you visit. What an extension can collect from webpages depends primarily on its permissions and its own code.

Update behavior differs by distribution channel

Extension source or setup Documented update destination and behavior Privacy detail to remember
Microsoft Edge Add-ons Updates are managed through the store and the extension publisher does not control the update mechanism. Updates may contain security fixes, bug fixes, features, or performance changes.
Chrome Web Store Regular update requests go to the Chrome Web Store. The request includes the extension ID, version, and information about Edge.
Externally installed extension with an update_url Edge checks the configured update endpoint every few hours, according to Microsoft’s developer documentation. The endpoint can receive extension ID and version parameters; cookie headers are handled specially.

The “every few hours” interval applies to externally installed extensions that use an update URL. It should not be treated as a universal schedule for every store or every extension.

Cookie protection for external update manifests

Microsoft’s documentation for externally installed extensions states: “In order to maintain user privacy, Microsoft Edge doesn’t send any Cookie headers with auto-update manifest requests, and ignores any Set-Cookie headers in the responses to those requests.” This protection is specifically about auto-update manifest requests for that external-installation path. It does not describe every request an extension may make while it is running, nor every possible update service.

Automatic updates have a security benefit: publishers can deliver fixes without waiting for you to reinstall an extension. The trade-off is that a trusted publisher can also ship feature or behavior changes. When a store provides release information, review significant changes, especially if the extension gains new permissions.

Why permissions matter more than the update check

An update request identifies an extension to an update service. Permissions grant the running extension capabilities. Microsoft’s enterprise guidance separates these into host permissions and device permissions.

Host permissions: access to websites

Host permissions specify which webpages an extension may view or modify. An extension allowed to operate on one named site has a narrower exposure than one allowed on many sites. Broad permission such as access to all websites can expose page text, form content, browsing activity, or the ability to change what a site displays, depending on the extension’s implementation.

Broad access is not proof that an extension is malicious. It is a statement of capability and potential exposure. A password manager, accessibility tool, or page translator may need substantial access to perform its advertised function; a simple new-tab theme usually should not need to read or modify every site. The useful test is whether the requested sites and data are necessary for the feature you want.

Device permissions: capabilities beyond webpages

Microsoft examples of device permissions include accessing USB devices, storing or viewing the screen, and communicating with native programs. These permissions can expose information outside the browser, so assess them separately from host access. An extension that only formats webpages should have a clear explanation for any request involving hardware, screen capture, local storage, or native messaging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permissions are not a safety rating

A permission prompt tells you what an extension is allowed to do, not what it has actually done with that access. Read the developer’s privacy policy for collection, retention, sharing, and deletion practices. Also consider the extension’s publisher, update source, maintenance history, and whether its stated purpose still matches the access it requests.

How to inspect and reduce extension access in Edge

  1. Open the extension manager. Select Settings and more > Extensions > Manage extensions. This page lists installed extensions and provides controls for disabling or removing them.
  2. Remove what you no longer use. Select an extension’s removal option when it is unnecessary. An uninstalled extension cannot exercise its browser permissions.
  3. Open the extension’s details. Review the permissions Edge displays and identify the sites or device capabilities involved. Treat an “all sites” request as a reason to ask for a specific explanation, not as automatic evidence of wrongdoing.
  4. Read the developer’s privacy policy. Look for what data is collected, why it is collected, whether it is sold or shared, how long it is retained, and how you can request deletion. If the policy does not explain data handling clearly, choose a different extension or leave it disabled.
  5. Limit site access where the control is available. Edge provides a site-level control that can block a user-installed extension on the current website. Turn the control off for sites where the extension is not needed, then test the extension on the sites that are part of its intended job.
  6. Recheck after updates. A publisher may change features or request additional access in a later release. Review the permission list again after a substantial update.

What the site-access toggle does—and does not do

The user-facing site toggle blocks user-installed extensions from running on the current site when it is turned off. It is not a universal off switch. Extensions installed through administrator policy, including force-installed extensions, continue to run regardless of the user’s selection. Edge displays an informational tooltip when this exception applies.

Controlling extensions from other stores

Edge can allow installations from stores other than Edge Add-ons. If you do not want Edge to make update requests to the Chrome Web Store for extensions obtained from other stores, open Manage extensions and turn off Allow extensions from other stores.

Save any information you need from those extensions before changing it, and expect to reinstall them from an approved source if you later re-enable the setting.

Privacy checks for common permission patterns

Permission pattern Questions to ask Practical response
Access to one or a few named sites Are those sites essential to the advertised function? Keep access limited to the required sites and disable it elsewhere.
Access to all websites Does the feature genuinely need to inspect or change arbitrary pages? Prefer a narrower alternative or restrict access with Edge’s runtime site control.
Screen viewing or capture When is the screen read, where is it sent, and how long is it retained? Enable only for a task that needs it; disable or remove the extension afterward.
USB or native-program communication Which device or local application is contacted, and why? Verify the publisher and purpose before granting access.
Cookie or web-request capabilities Can the extension observe sign-in state, alter requests, or access sensitive sessions? Use an extension with a clear explanation and restrict it on sensitive sites where possible.

These are decision questions, not automatic verdicts. A permission is justified when it is proportionate to the feature and the developer explains its data practices.

What Microsoft’s store rules establish

Microsoft’s Edge Add-ons developer policies require extensions to request only permissions necessary for their declared functionality, provide clear data-handling disclosures, avoid collecting or tracking sensitive user information without clear consent, and encrypt user-sensitive data using appropriate mechanisms. These are marketplace requirements imposed on publishers.

Those rules do not mean every extension has been independently audited, that every publisher follows the rules perfectly, or that you can skip reading an extension’s own privacy policy. Evaluate the particular extension and its current permissions.

Manifest V3 and remotely hosted code

Microsoft’s Manifest V3 guidance says Edge Add-ons disallow remotely hosted code so submitted code can be validated. The same guidance warns that broad runtime host permissions create privacy and security risk and describes runtime controls for allowing or restricting access to websites. This policy context applies to Edge Add-ons; an extension obtained through another distribution path may be subject to different review and delivery conditions.

Managed work and school devices

On a managed computer, an administrator can impose controls that are unavailable to an ordinary user. Ask your IT administrator which extensions were installed by policy, what sites they can access, and whether they can read cookies or modify web requests.

Microsoft’s ExtensionSettings policy can block specific permissions and restrict an extension’s interaction with named hosts. If a required permission is blocked, the extension may fail to install or load. If the blocked permission is optional, Edge can install the extension while declining that permission at runtime. Administrators can also prevent extensions from interacting with specified websites and can control capabilities such as cookie access and web-request modification.

Because policy-installed extensions ignore the user’s site-level toggle, an employee who needs to limit access should request a policy change rather than relying only on the browser’s per-site switch.

A practical privacy decision framework

  1. Identify the source. Record whether the extension came from Edge Add-ons, the Chrome Web Store, or an external package with an update URL. The source determines which documented update path applies.
  2. List the capabilities. Separate website access from device access. Note broad host patterns, screen or USB access, native messaging, cookie access, and web-request controls.
  3. Match capability to purpose. For each permission, write the feature that supposedly requires it. A permission without a credible feature explanation is a reason to reject or remove the extension.
  4. Check disclosures. Read the privacy policy for collection, sharing, retention, security, and deletion terms. Look for a publisher identity and a maintained release history.
  5. Apply the narrowest control. Restrict site access, disable the extension when not needed, or remove it. On a managed device, involve the administrator.
  6. Review after change. Confirm the feature still works and watch for new permission prompts or unexpected behavior after updates.

Common questions and failure cases

Does Edge send my browsing history every time an extension updates?

The documented update information is a list of installed extensions; Chrome Web Store requests include extension ID, version, and Edge information. That documentation does not say that a complete browsing history is sent as part of the update check. An extension running in the browser may separately access webpages if its permissions and code allow it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I stop all extension update traffic?

The documented controls let you manage or remove extensions and turn off Allow extensions from other stores, with the stated consequence that non-Edge Add-ons extensions are uninstalled. There is no general promise in the cited guidance that one user-facing switch disables every update request for every extension source while keeping all extensions installed.

Why does an extension still run after I turned off access for a site?

First check whether it is force-installed by an administrator. Policy-installed extensions are unaffected by the user’s site toggle. On a work or school device, ask IT to confirm the policy and alter the extension’s host restrictions if needed.

What happens when an administrator blocks a permission?

A blocked required permission can prevent installation or loading. A blocked optional permission can be declined while the extension continues running without that capability. The result depends on how the extension declares the permission and how its features handle the denial.

Should I reject every extension that requests access to all sites?

No. Rejecting every broad request would also remove legitimate tools whose core function requires page-wide access. Instead, verify that the access is necessary, read the privacy policy, use site controls, and prefer a narrower extension when the feature does not justify broad access.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Bottom line for everyday Edge use

Edge update checks disclose extension-related identifiers and version information to the relevant update service, with documented cookie protections for externally installed update-manifest requests. The larger privacy decision is the access granted to the extension after installation. Keep only extensions whose permissions match a clear purpose, limit their site access, read their data-handling terms, and treat administrator-installed extensions as a separate case that requires IT oversight.
