Ecologists combine field inventories, root and soil samples, DNA sequencing, acoustic recordings, cameras, chemical measurements and statistical models to map forest relationships. A spatial map shows where organisms or symbiosis types occur; a network diagram shows which sampled entities are associated, co-occurring or linked by an explicitly measured process. Those are different products, and neither an inferred connection nor co-occurrence alone proves that resources move between organisms or that one causes another.
What “mapping connections” means in ecology
The phrase covers two complementary questions. Spatial mapping asks where a species, host type or ecological association is found. It may produce a map of plots across a continent or a fine-scale map of root tips in one forest stand. Network mapping asks which entities have links in a defined dataset. Nodes might be tree species, individual trees, fungal genotypes, animal taxa or ecosystem functions; an edge might mean an identified host association, statistical co-occurrence, a trophic detection or measured material transfer.
Before interpreting a diagram, readers should ask what an edge means, how the organisms were detected and at what scale. A line between a tree and a fungus can represent a fungus identified on that tree’s sampled root tip. It does not automatically mean that carbon, nitrogen or water moved between trees through the fungus. Likewise, a line between two soil organisms in a co-occurrence network records a pattern in the samples, not necessarily a direct interaction.
How broad maps of tree–fungus symbiosis are made
Assembling forest inventory data
For continental or global mapping, researchers start with many forest inventory plots. A 2019 Nature study used more than 1.1 million plots representing more than 28,000 tree species. Plot records were combined with environmental predictors, including climate-related conditions that influence decomposition, to model the likely distribution of dominant forest-tree symbiosis types. The resulting product is a spatially explicit model rather than a direct census of every tree and fungus in every mapped cell. See the study at Nature.

What the global estimate tells you
The study’s authors estimated that ectomycorrhizal trees make up approximately 60% of tree stems on Earth. That number is an author-reported estimate derived from the assembled inventory and model; it is not a universal field count. Broad maps are useful for comparing regions, testing links between climate and symbiosis, and identifying areas where more sampling would improve predictions.
Why the map is not a root-level observation
A modeled cell can show the most probable symbiosis type under its environmental and inventory inputs. It cannot establish that every tree in that cell has the modeled association, nor can it reveal which fungal genotype is attached to a particular root. Resolution, sampling bias, classification rules and uncertainty in predictor data all affect the map.
How local root sampling becomes a tree–fungus network
Collecting and identifying root tips
To resolve associations at stand or tree scale, ecologists excavate or otherwise collect mycorrhizal root tips. They identify the host tree and the fungus, often with DNA sequencing. In a Douglas-fir study, microsatellite DNA markers were used to identify tree and fungal genotypes isolated from mycorrhizas and to compare those genotypes with reference tree boles. Each sampled root tip can therefore contribute a host node, a fungal node and an observed association edge. The method is described in the Journal of Ecology study.

What genotype-level edges represent
Genotyping can show that a particular fungal genotype was found on roots belonging to a particular tree genotype, or that several hosts shared a fungal genotype in the sampled material. It can reveal specialization, generalization and differences between forest conditions, but the edge remains an observation of association. Demonstrating exchange would require an additional measurement, such as a tracer experiment or direct flux measurement.
Changing the viewpoint of the same data
Network theory allows one dataset to be examined from different perspectives. In a 2005 analysis of potential mycorrhizal networks, trees were treated as nodes and fungi as links in a phytocentric view; the same relationships were then considered from the fungal perspective. The paper deliberately uses the term “potential mycorrhizal networks,” a reminder that inferred connectivity should not be written as proof of resource transfer. The PubMed record is available at Application of network theory to potential mycorrhizal networks.

- Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding identifies genetic traces in a collected substrate such as water, soil, material rolled from tree trunks or scat. It indicates that DNA from a taxon was present in the sampled material; it does not necessarily show when an animal was present or whether it interacted with another detected species.
- Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) records calls and other sounds. It is particularly useful for vocalizing birds, bats and other detectable animals, but silent or quiet species can be missed.
- Camera traps record animals that pass through the cameras’ detection area. Placement, field of view, body size, vegetation and activity timing determine which animals are likely to appear.
Because these methods sample different traces and time windows, their species lists overlap only partly. A combined dataset can support a richer picture of vertebrate presence and possible trophic relationships than any method alone.
The Scottish rewilding example
A British Ecological Society summary of an integrated study at a Scottish rewilding site compared eDNA from water, soil, tree-rolling material and scat with PAM and camera traps. The study summary reports 79 vertebrate taxa in total: PAM detected 52, eDNA 44 and camera traps 12. Water and tree-rolling eDNA produced the highest richness among the eDNA substrates. Each method also detected unique species; birds and bats were best covered by PAM in that study, while eDNA was especially useful for small mammals. Combining eDNA with PAM yielded the most complete trophic network reported for that site. These counts are site- and study-specific, not universal rankings of method performance. Details are provided by the British Ecological Society resource.
Turning detections into a wildlife network
Researchers first standardize detections by taxon, sampling location and time. They can then create a bipartite network linking taxa to methods or samples, a spatial network linking taxa to plots, or a trophic network in which edges represent documented or inferred feeding relationships. A taxon detected by both a camera and eDNA has evidence from two observation streams, but that overlap is not itself a predator–prey interaction. Trophic edges need dietary observations, gut-content or isotope evidence, literature-supported relationships or another explicit basis.

Using stable isotopes to infer fungal nutritional roles
Chemical measurements provide a different kind of evidence from DNA association. Carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios can help distinguish fungi that obtain nutrients through ectomycorrhizal partnerships from fungi that decompose organic matter. A study summarized by the US Forest Service analyzed 813 fungi from 23 sites. Isotope values verified collector-based ectomycorrhizal or saprotrophic classifications for more than 91% of samples and supplied probabilistic assignments for 27 fungi whose roles were unknown. The record is available at Elucidating the nutritional dynamics of fungi using stable isotopes.
These isotope results strengthen classification of nutritional strategy; they do not, by themselves, map direct tree-to-tree exchange. To claim transfer, an investigation would need to measure movement of a labeled or otherwise traceable resource, establish the pathway and rule out alternative sources.

The EcoFINDERS project illustrates a multi-method, landscape-scale approach. Researchers sampled 76 sites in 11 European countries, covering five biogeographical zones and three land uses. Fourteen biological methods measured organisms and functions, including fungi, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, soil fauna and microbial processes. Ecological network analysis was then used to examine connections among organisms and functions across land-use scenarios.

The project reported the highest network density in forest soils and the lowest in arable soils. It also found that biological indicators associated with nutrient-cycling models changed depending on which model was applied. These are patterns in the sampled dataset. Network density is not automatically a cause of better ecosystem functioning, and a statistical association between an indicator and a function does not prove a direct biological mechanism. A practical workflow from field observations to a map
- Define the question and unit of analysis. Decide whether the output should show locations, host associations, animal detections, trophic links or ecosystem functions. Specify the spatial grain (root tip, plot, stand, site or region) and the time window.
- Choose complementary observations. Pair root genotyping with tree inventories for local symbiosis; combine eDNA, PAM and cameras for wildlife; add isotope measurements when nutritional role matters. Record sampling effort and detection conditions for every method.
- Identify and quality-check samples. Assign taxonomic names or genetic identifiers, remove contamination and ambiguous records, and retain confidence levels. A network cannot be more specific than the identifications behind its edges.
- Build the spatial layer. Georeference plots, roots, recorders, cameras and environmental samples. Use measured coordinates for local observations and label modeled predictions as predictions. Preserve uncertainty or confidence intervals where the method provides them.
- Define nodes and edges before calculating network metrics. State whether nodes are species, individuals, genotypes, samples or functions. State whether edges mean observed association, co-occurrence, detection overlap, inferred trophic relation or experimentally measured transfer.
- Standardize effort and detection. Unequal recorder days, camera operation, sample volume or sequencing depth can make one location appear richer simply because it was sampled more intensively. Analyze effort and detection probability rather than treating every absence as proof of absence.
- Analyze and visualize separately. Plot distributions on maps, then draw networks from the same records. Keeping the products separate prevents a visually impressive network line from being mistaken for a geographic route or a measured flow of resources.
- Validate important edges. Compare repeated sampling, independent methods, feeding observations, isotope patterns or tracer experiments. Report which links are directly observed and which remain hypotheses for further testing.
How to read an ecological connection map without overclaiming
- Check the evidence label. “Association,” “co-occurrence,” “potential network” and “modeled distribution” are not synonyms for interaction or transfer.
- Check scale. A global symbiosis prediction cannot answer which fungal genotype is on a particular tree, and a root-tip network cannot describe an entire continent without additional sampling and modeling.
- Check detection bias. eDNA, sound and cameras observe different traces. A species absent from one layer may still be present but undetected.
- Check direction and causality. Most association networks are undirected: they show that two entities are linked in the data. Directional arrows require evidence about who affects whom, consumes whom or transfers what.
- Check uncertainty and replication. Confidence scores, repeated visits, independent markers and multiple sites make a proposed edge more credible than a single unreplicated detection.
The strongest ecological maps therefore combine spatial context with an explicit evidence legend. They show not only where a relationship was inferred, but also which measurement created the link and what remains untested.
