Electrocatalyst-in-a-box (ECaB) is a proof-of-concept process that extracts nitrate from wastewater, converts it to ammonia in a controlled electrochemical solution, and captures the ammonia as ammonium sulfate. It is a linked separation-and-recovery system, not a catalyst placed directly into untreated wastewater—and it has not been shown to operate at a commercial wastewater plant.
How does electrocatalyst-in-a-box work?
The 2024 study by Dean M. Miller, Matthew J. Liu, Kristen Abels, Andreas Kogler, Kyle S. Williams, and William A. Tarpeh describes ECaB as a nitrate-reduction reactive separation. It connects three operations so nitrate can be removed from an impure, dilute stream before conversion and product recovery.
- Extract nitrate: Donnan membrane dialysis (DD) moves nitrate across an anion-exchange membrane from wastewater into a smaller receiver stream. In the described design, chloride moves in the opposite direction, driven by an electrochemical-potential gradient. Using a smaller receiver volume can concentrate nitrate relative to the wastewater feed.
- Convert nitrate: The receiver electrolyte is engineered to be conductive and to limit magnesium exposure. A homogeneous molecular catalyst, Co(DIM), drives the electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia in this controlled solution.
- Recover ammonia: Ammonia crosses a gas-permeable membrane into an acidic trap, where it is retained and recovered as ammonium sulfate.
The separation step is central to the design: it keeps the catalyst from being directly exposed to the full mixture of wastewater constituents while moving nitrate into an environment suited to conversion. The behavior of the separation step will depend on wastewater composition; the study does not establish that all wastewater streams behave identically.

Why separate nitrate before converting it?
Wastewater is not a clean nitrate solution. In its catalyst investigation, the 2024 study found that magnesium-related mechanisms in real wastewater decreased nitrate-conversion activity by 62.0%. This is a result for the study’s catalyst investigation, not a universal inhibition figure for every wastewater or operating condition.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ECaB addresses that challenge by extracting nitrate into a designed receiver electrolyte rather than asking the catalyst to work in untreated wastewater. The receiver is also intended to provide a conductive environment and exclude magnesium that interferes with catalytic activity. The result is an integrated process architecture: separation protects the conversion step, while the gas-permeable membrane and acid trap provide a route to product recovery.
What performance has been reported?
The peer-reviewed 2024 Energy & Environmental Science study reported 90.0 ± 2.7 kWh per kilogram of nitrogen (kg N−1) for purified ammonia produced from wastewater-derived nitrate in its proof-of-concept ECaB system. The figure is tied to that study’s experimental system boundary and product basis; it should not be treated as a general energy requirement for ammonia production or directly compared with another process unless the boundaries and bases match.

The paper also reported that engineering the ECaB subunit processes enhanced the ammonia production rate by 20.4×. That is the improvement reported by the authors for their system, not evidence of a commercial-scale production rate. The paper described direct treatment of real municipal wastewater, recovery of purified ammonium sulfate, and reuse of homogeneous catalysts. At the time of publication, the authors characterized the energy result as the lowest reported for purified wastewater-derived ammonia among the nitrate-reduction reactive-separation processes they compared; that is a dated comparison, not an unqualified current record.

A 2024 AIChE proceedings abstract describes follow-on work on a continuous ECaB system, including flow-condition optimization, process modeling, and validation in a benchtop experiment using real fertilizer runoff as its intended process case. Under an optimized flow condition, it reported an ammonia partial current density of about 200 mA cm−2 at −0.53 VRHE. This is a benchtop follow-on result, not the headline performance measure from the original paper.

The same abstract says solution-phase transport limitations accounted for 42% of the observed Donnan dialysis extraction rate at a low linear flow rate of 32 cm s−1, and that the limitation was overcome at 170 cm s−1. These figures describe the abstract’s flow experiments; they do not establish performance across other feed compositions, equipment scales, or operating durations.

No deployment at full scale is established by the cited work. Stanford’s official technology profile labels the technology “Proof of Concept” and describes a multi-unit research process involving two reactor cells, four recirculating electrolyte reservoirs, and open-circuit and applied-potential operating conditions. The AIChE abstract’s continuous experiment is benchtop validation, not evidence of long-duration field operation or commercial economics.
