Ervebo is a one-dose, live recombinant vaccine that trains the immune system to recognize Ebola virus (EBOV), the orthoebolavirus species that causes Ebola virus disease. It is primarily used in outbreak ring vaccination and controlled preventive programs for health-care and frontline workers. It is not a general consumer vaccine, and it does not protect against every virus called “Ebola.”
Eligibility depends on the virus involved, an outbreak or occupational role, age, health status and local public-health decisions. WHO’s September 2026 guidance identifies Ervebo as the only licensed and WHO-prequalified vaccine specifically available for EBOV-caused disease. During a Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak, WHO recommends Ervebo only inside research protocols because human efficacy remains unknown.
Is there a vaccine against Ebola disease?
Yes. Ervebo (rVSV-ZEBOV) is licensed for protection against Ebola virus disease caused by Ebola virus (EBOV). It is a live, replication-competent but attenuated recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). Researchers insert a gene that codes for an Ebola-virus surface protein into VSV. The resulting vaccine virus presents that Ebola protein to the immune system without containing the whole Ebola virus and without causing Ebola disease. CDC product information

WHO states: “The Ervebo vaccine is only recommended by WHO for use against Ebola virus disease (EVD).” That qualification matters because “Ebola” is often used informally for several different orthoebolaviruses. WHO identifies four species known to cause human disease:

How does Ervebo work?
Ervebo uses VSV as a carrier. The vaccine virus is engineered to display a gene from EBOV, rather than the complete Ebola virus. After injection, the attenuated VSV can replicate enough to stimulate immune defenses. The immune system recognizes the Ebola protein, activates antibody and cellular responses, and develops memory that can respond more quickly if the person later encounters EBOV.
Because the vaccine contains no complete Ebola virus, it cannot give a vaccinated person Ebola virus disease. It is nevertheless a live vaccine, so its use, storage and administration are handled through public-health or occupational programs rather than ordinary retail vaccination. The product’s live-virus design also explains why clinicians review immune status and give post-vaccination precautions.
Who may be offered Ervebo during an Ebola outbreak?
Contacts and contacts of contacts
WHO recommends ring vaccination during EBOV outbreaks. Public-health teams identify a person with Ebola disease, then offer vaccination to eligible contacts and contacts of contacts. A ring can include household members, caregivers, health-care workers and other people whose exposure risk is established through contact tracing. WHO recommends that outbreak rings can include children from birth. Vaccination below the licensed age of 12 months is therefore an off-label public-health decision made in the outbreak context; it is not the same as a routine infant indication.
Health-care and frontline workers
WHO recommends preventive vaccination for health-care and frontline workers in areas considered at risk of future EBOV outbreaks. “Frontline” can include personnel whose work places them in likely contact with patients, human remains, laboratories, response teams or community operations, but the responsible public-health authority determines which roles qualify. Countries can request preventive supplies through Gavi, while outbreak-response doses can be accessed through the International Coordinating Group (ICG) stockpile. WHO Ebola immunization program
United States occupational eligibility
In the United States, ERVEBO is FDA-approved for people aged 12 months and older, but CDC’s pre-exposure program is narrower than that age label. CDC describes vaccination for adults in specified occupational categories, including responders traveling to an active outbreak. Can children, pregnant and breastfeeding women receive Ervebo?
Children
The licensed indication covers people aged 12 months and older. In an EBOV outbreak, WHO’s ring strategy can include children from birth when they are contacts or contacts of contacts. Giving Ervebo to a child younger than 12 months in that setting is off-label and requires a public-health risk–benefit decision.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
WHO says pregnant and breastfeeding women may be vaccinated during EBOV outbreaks when they are included in the response. CDC notes that pregnancy studies are insufficient to establish fetal risk and that live attenuated vaccines are generally contraindicated during pregnancy. Pregnancy and lactation are not automatic exclusions for Ervebo in an outbreak, but the decision should be individualized with a clinician, weighing the likelihood and consequences of EBOV exposure against the limited pregnancy evidence. Immune compromise and acute illness
Safety and effectiveness have not been established for people with immune compromise, so they need an individualized assessment. CDC lists a history of severe allergy to a vaccine component, including rice protein, as a contraindication. An acute systemic illness at the scheduled vaccination time can also be a contraindication; vaccination may be rescheduled after recovery. The administering clinician checks the current product information and the person’s medical history before giving the dose.
How long does the Ervebo vaccine take to provide protection?
WHO says a sufficient immune response generally develops in 10 to 14 days. A person is not immediately protected after the injection, and vaccination does not prevent illness in someone who is already infected or who has just been exposed. During the waiting period—and afterward—people must follow contact-monitoring, personal-protective-equipment and other instructions from public-health teams. WHO Ebola vaccines Q&A

What human efficacy evidence shows
During the 2014–2016 Guinea outbreak, a randomized cluster-vaccination study gave immediate Ervebo vaccination to 3,775 people who were close contacts of someone diagnosed with Ebola disease and to their close contacts. According to CDC’s product information, no person vaccinated immediately developed Ebola disease 10 or more days after vaccination. This is a result from that specific outbreak trial—not a guarantee that every vaccinated individual will be protected under every exposure condition. CDC product information
How long protection lasts
WHO reports that antibodies have been detected for up to five years after vaccination. However, it is not known whether the measured antibody level is enough to prevent infection throughout that period, so “antibodies detected for five years” should not be treated as proof of five years of clinical protection. Bundibugyo virus disease (BDBV) is caused by a different orthoebolavirus species from EBOV. WHO’s emergency guidance dated 31 August 2026 reviewed animal, immunological and observational findings. Some results suggest Ervebo might produce cross-protection, but the evidence is not sufficient to establish clinically meaningful protection in humans.

What side effects and precautions should recipients expect?
Common short-term effects
WHO lists injection-site pain, fever and headache as common effects. They are often mild and commonly begin within 24 to 48 hours. A vaccination team should provide instructions for managing expected symptoms and explain when to seek medical attention.
Immediate observation and allergy risk
CDC advises observing recipients for at least 15 minutes after vaccination because anaphylaxis is possible, although rare. Anyone who develops breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives, faintness or other signs of a severe allergic reaction needs urgent medical care.
Temporary precautions after a live vaccine
CDC describes precautions because vaccine-virus RNA can be detected in some bodily fluids after vaccination. Its product information advises avoiding sharing certain personal items and avoiding open-mouth kissing for two weeks. It also describes avoiding close association with people who are immunocompromised, pregnant or breastfeeding, or children younger than one year for up to six weeks. Ervebo is one layer of an Ebola response, not a substitute for infection-control work. WHO’s response package includes surveillance and contact tracing, laboratory confirmation, rapid isolation and supportive care, infection-prevention and control procedures, safe burials and community engagement. Vaccinated health-care workers and responders still need the required protective equipment, training and biosafety practices. How eligibility is decided in practice
There is no universal self-screening form that makes someone eligible. Public-health officials and clinicians usually work through these questions:
- Which virus is causing the event? Ervebo’s established indication is EBOV. If testing identifies BDBV, SUDV or TAFV, the applicable guidance may be research-based or may offer no licensed vaccine.
- Is there an active outbreak or a recognized occupational risk? Contacts, contacts of contacts, health-care workers and designated responders may be offered vaccination through organized programs.
- Does the person meet the applicable age and program criteria? The licensed age is 12 months and older, while outbreak rings can include younger infants off-label and U.S. pre-exposure programs focus on specified adult occupations.
- Are pregnancy, breastfeeding, immune status, allergies or current illness relevant? The clinician weighs these factors against exposure risk rather than applying a single rule to everyone.
- Can the person follow post-vaccination precautions and continue protective measures? Vaccination does not create immediate immunity and does not remove the need for protective equipment or monitoring.
For someone who believes they may have been exposed, the correct action is to contact the local public-health authority or response team immediately—not to seek a retail appointment or wait for symptoms.
