Ebola spreads mainly through direct contact with blood or other body fluids from a person who is sick or has died from Ebola, or through objects contaminated with those fluids. It does not spread through ordinary proximity or through the air. Symptoms usually begin 2 to 21 days after exposure (8 to 10 days on average), and early illness can look like several more common infections.
If you may have been exposed and develop compatible symptoms, separate yourself from others, contact a clinician and your local public-health authority immediately, and call ahead before going to a facility. Do not try to confirm Ebola with a home test or diagnose it from symptoms alone.
How Ebola spreads
Ebola disease is caused by orthoebolaviruses. According to the CDC’s Ebola Disease Basics page (June 2, 2026), infection can occur when blood or other body fluids from an infected person enter another person’s body through the eyes, nose, mouth, broken skin or other pathways. Contact with contaminated objects can also transmit the virus.
Body fluids that can carry Ebola
CDC lists blood, urine, feces, saliva, sweat, vomit, breast milk, amniotic fluid, semen and vaginal fluid as potential sources. The risk is greatest when a person is ill and producing these fluids, or when handling a body after death without the infection-control measures used by trained teams. A splash to the eyes or mouth, contact with broken skin, or touching a contaminated surface and then touching your face can be important exposures.

When an infected person is contagious
A person becomes contagious once symptoms begin. Someone who feels well is not considered contagious in the same way, although anyone with a known exposure should follow instructions from public-health officials. Semen from a person who has recovered can remain a potential source until testing shows that the virus is no longer present; ordinary social contact with a recovered person is not, by itself, a transmission route.
What Ebola does not do
Ebola is not an airborne infection and does not spread simply because people are near one another. The CDC states: “Ebola does NOT spread the same way as respiratory viruses like flu and COVID.” Sitting next to someone, sharing a room without contact with infectious fluids, or breathing the same air is not the typical mechanism of spread. This distinction matters: a person may need monitoring after a documented exposure, but casual proximity alone is not proof of infection.
Less common sources
Rare infections have followed contact with an infected animal. The bodies of people who died from Ebola also remain a transmission risk, which is why funerals and burials during outbreaks require specially trained teams and procedures. Do not touch a body, clothing, bedding or medical waste that may contain infectious fluids unless trained responders direct and protect you.
Which exposure situations matter most?
| Situation | Why it matters | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Contact with blood or body fluids from a symptomatic person | This is the principal documented route. | Stop contact, wash exposed skin with soap and water, flush eyes or mucous membranes with clean water, and contact public-health officials promptly for instructions. |
| Touching clothing, bedding, equipment or other objects contaminated with fluids | Virus-containing fluids on objects can expose another person. | Do not handle or clean suspected materials yourself; ask health officials for safe decontamination guidance. |
| Handling the body of someone who died from Ebola | The body can still contain infectious fluids. | Do not handle the body or participate in an unprotected burial; notify local health authorities. |
| Sexual contact with a survivor before clearance testing | Semen may contain virus after recovery. | Follow the survivor’s clinical and public-health guidance about testing and safer sex. |
| Being near someone, or sharing air without fluid contact | This is not the usual route; Ebola is not spread like flu or COVID. | Routine proximity alone is not evidence of infection, but a documented exposure should still be reported. |
Incubation and symptom progression
Symptoms can appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure. The public CDC symptom page reports an average onset of 8 to 10 days. The average is a description of observed cases, not a deadline or guarantee: some people become ill earlier or later within the recognized window. A person who remains well beyond 21 days after the last credible exposure is outside that usual incubation window, but monitoring instructions should come from the relevant health authority.

| Stage | Typical timing | Possible findings |
|---|---|---|
| Incubation | 2–21 days after exposure; average 8–10 days | No symptoms. A person is not considered contagious before symptoms begin. |
| Early illness | When symptoms start | Fever, muscle and joint aches, severe headache, weakness, fatigue, sore throat and loss of appetite. |
| Gastrointestinal phase | Often about four to five days after symptoms begin | Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea may develop. |
| Other or severe features | As illness progresses | Chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, red eyes, rash, hiccups, seizures and, in some patients, unexplained bleeding. |
Bleeding is not required
Bleeding is an important warning sign but is not present in every case. In its clinical-features information, the CDC reported unexplained bleeding in 40% of patients (2026). Do not wait for bleeding before seeking advice when a compatible illness follows a credible exposure.
What outbreak statistics mean
During the 2014–2016 West Africa outbreak, the most commonly reported signs and symptoms were fever (87%), fatigue (76%), vomiting (68%), diarrhea (66%) and loss of appetite (65%), according to CDC clinical-features information. Those percentages describe that outbreak’s reported cases; they are not universal probabilities for every patient, virus species or future outbreak.
Why symptoms cannot confirm Ebola
Early Ebola symptoms overlap with malaria, influenza, typhoid fever, meningococcal disease, pneumonia and other bacterial infections. A fever after travel therefore needs a professional risk assessment rather than a symptom-based conclusion. CDC clinical guidance recommends continuing evaluation for more likely conditions while Ebola is assessed. The absence of vomiting, diarrhea or bleeding does not rule Ebola in or out.
What counts as a possible exposure?
Public-health teams assess the details, not just whether you were in the same place as a sick person. Be ready to explain the country and dates of travel, when contact occurred, whether the person had symptoms, which fluid or object was involved, and whether fluid touched your eyes, mouth or broken skin. Include contact with a deceased person, participation in a funeral or burial, animal contact, and sexual contact with a survivor whose clearance testing is unknown. A health official may classify the event as no exposure, a contact requiring monitoring, or a higher-risk exposure needing immediate evaluation.

Do not try to estimate your own risk from a symptom checklist. The same fever can result from many illnesses, and the significance of a contact depends on timing and the type of fluid exposure.
What to do after a possible exposure
If symptoms have started
- Separate from other people. Stay in a room alone and, if possible, use a separate bathroom. Avoid contact with blood, vomit, diarrhea, urine, saliva, sweat, semen and other body fluids.
- Call immediately. Contact a doctor and your state or local health department in the United States, or the equivalent public-health authority where you live. Explain the exposure, the date it occurred, your symptoms and any recent travel.
- Do not travel while sick. Tell officials where you are so they can arrange an appropriate evaluation.
- Call before in-person care. Do not walk into a clinic, urgent-care center or emergency department without warning staff that Ebola is possible. Advance notice lets the facility prepare appropriate infection-control precautions.
- Use emergency services when necessary. If urgent care is needed and public-health officials cannot be reached, call a healthcare provider. If that is not possible in the United States, call 911 and disclose the symptoms and recent travel before responders arrive. Elsewhere, use the local emergency number.
If you returned from an affected area but have no symptoms
The CDC’s traveler guidance (updated September 1, 2026) advises people returning from an Ebola-affected area to separate from others while contacting local health officials for instructions. Stay in a room alone and avoid sharing a bathroom if possible until officials explain what monitoring or restrictions apply. Do not decide on your own to travel onward; report the country, dates and nature of any possible exposure. Officials may give you a monitoring schedule and specific instructions about temperature checks, movement and whom to call if symptoms develop.
If the exposure was only casual proximity
Being in the same room or near a person without contact with infectious fluids is not the typical transmission route. Even so, if health officials identify you as a contact, follow their monitoring plan and report any fever or other symptoms immediately.

Because early symptoms resemble common diseases, clinicians may test for and treat more likely causes while Ebola testing is arranged. They also notify public-health authorities and use infection-control precautions to protect staff, other patients and household contacts. Give responders a complete travel and exposure history; withholding that information can delay the right precautions. A call ahead is therefore a safety step, not a reason to postpone urgent assessment.
Treatment and vaccines: what the approvals mean
There are no consumer treatments or home remedies that diagnose, prevent or cure Ebola. CDC states that the vaccine ERVEBO is approved for prevention, while Inmazeb and Ebanga are approved for treatment, only for Ebola disease caused by Orthoebolavirus zairense (formerly called Zaire ebolavirus). CDC also states that no FDA-approved vaccine or treatment exists for the other three orthoebolaviruses known to cause disease in people. These are regulated medical interventions selected by specialists during public-health responses, not products for self-selection or ordinary purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preventing transmission while waiting for instructions
- Avoid touching another person’s blood or body fluids, and do not clean contaminated laundry, surfaces or medical waste yourself.
- Do not share items that may have been contaminated with fluids.
- Keep household members, visitors and pets away from the sick person until health officials provide a plan.
- Follow instructions from the local health authority about transport, testing, contact monitoring and disposal of materials.
- Use current official information for the country and date concerned. Outbreak locations, travel notices and response procedures can change; the CDC’s Ebola landing page links to current U.S. updates.
When to treat the situation as an emergency
Call emergency services after notifying them about a possible Ebola exposure if the person has trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, seizures, severe weakness, repeated vomiting or diarrhea, signs of dehydration, or any unexplained bleeding. These findings can have many causes, but they require urgent medical assessment. Tell dispatchers about recent travel and possible Ebola before arrival so responders can use the appropriate precautions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ebola spread through the air or by sitting next to someone?
