In EA SPORTS FC 26, the formation is your defensive starting shape, while player roles and focuses determine how that shape behaves in possession. A Tactical Preset gives you a ready-made combination of formation, roles and team instructions; you can use it unchanged, customize it, or ask Tactical Suggestions to adapt the tactic to your squad without changing the formation. The most reliable way to build a tactic is to choose the defensive base you want first, then use roles to create the attacking spacing, width and support you need.
The FC IQ system in FC 26
FC IQ is FC 26’s tactical and positional system. It connects four decisions that are easy to confuse:

The game uses the formation to determine how your side lines up when defending without the ball. Roles and focuses can then move players into different lanes, heights and support positions when you have possession. EA’s FC 25 explanation did not provide a separately selected, freely editable “attacking formation”; your in-possession structure is created through roles and team tactics instead.

What a formation actually controls
It defines the defensive shell
Choose a formation according to the shape you want when possession is lost. A back-four formation gives you two full-back positions, while a back-three or back-five arrangement changes which defensive positions are available and how wide coverage is assigned. The formation also determines the midfield and forward slots into which you can place players.
This is why changing from one formation to another is not simply a cosmetic change. It alters the spaces your players occupy while defending, the number of natural central positions, and the roles you can select for each slot. A role cannot turn a four-defender setup into a completely different defensive system by itself.
It does not dictate every attacking position
Two teams using the same formation can look very different with the ball. For example, a wide player assigned a role that holds width can keep the touchline occupied, while another role may move inside to connect midfield. A defensive midfielder can remain as a rest-defence option or make forward runs depending on the selected role and focus. Check the in-game With Ball view rather than judging the tactic only from the formation diagram.
Roles, focuses and Role Familiarity
Role versus focus
A role answers “what is this player mainly asked to do?” A focus answers “which variation of that job should the player prioritize?” Focuses can alter positioning, risk, movement and the balance between attacking contribution and defensive recovery. EA describes these effects as trade-offs: a player may offer more in attack but take longer to return to defensive duties.
Read the role description in the squad screen before assigning it. The wording is more useful than assuming that a familiar football label always behaves exactly as it does in real life. FC 26 also adds a Versatile focus and revises several existing focuses. The FC 25 Advanced Forward Complete focus, for instance, becomes Advanced Forward Versatile in FC 26.
Role Familiarity levels
Role Familiarity indicates how proficient a player is in the selected role. The FC 25 system used four labels:

FC 26 reduces the negative impact of being Out of Position, improves regular roles and Role+ relative to Role++, and gives some players more available positions and roles. Those are version-sensitive balance changes, so inspect the current role panel before using a player-specific example from an older guide. FC 26 also adds a squad view that makes Out of Position indicators easier to spot.

Four roles added in FC 26
EA’s FC 26 gameplay notes identify four new roles. They are not interchangeable; each changes a different part of your build-up or defensive coverage.

How Tactical Presets differ from Tactical Suggestions
Tactical Presets
A Tactical Preset is a packaged starting point built around a recognizable football approach. It can save a new player from assigning every role manually, or give an experienced player a coherent base to edit. EA Help says presets are compatible with the available formations, while custom presets can have incompatibilities. Use the preset’s in-game summary and warnings rather than assuming that every combination will behave like the original template.
A preset is not a permanent identity for your team. Once you change roles or instructions, review the summary again; the resulting tactic may no longer produce the same spacing or pressing behavior as the untouched preset.

Tactical Suggestions
Tactical Suggestions are different from selecting a fixed preset. In FC 26, a suggestion creates a version of the tactic suited to the players in your squad while preserving your existing formation. This makes suggestions useful when your preferred defensive shell is working but several players are poor fits for the assigned roles. They are a way to adapt the jobs inside the shape, not a command to replace the shape itself.

A practical method for building your own tactic
- Choose the defensive base. Pick the formation that gives you the number and location of defenders and midfielders you want when the ball is lost. Do not begin by chasing a popular attacking shape.
- Place players in natural positions. Start with players who have the relevant position and role familiarity. A base Role is acceptable; Role+ and Role++ are advantages, not mandatory requirements.
- Assign the central structure first. Decide which players will protect the centre during transitions. If you use an Inverted Wingback or Box Crasher, identify who covers the space that role leaves or attacks.
- Add width and depth. Use the role descriptions to decide who holds the touchline, who attacks behind the defence and who supports underneath. Avoid assigning every player an aggressive forward behavior.
- Choose focuses deliberately. Compare the positive behavior with its cost. A more attacking focus may improve numbers near the box but reduce recovery speed or defensive support.
- Inspect both tactical views. Open the With Ball view to check attacking lanes and spacing, then open Without Ball to confirm that the defensive shell still resembles the formation you intended.
- Read the tactical breakdown. FC 26 provides a chart covering Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length and Endurance. Use it to identify an extreme setting before you play, rather than guessing from one player’s role.
- Test one change at a time. If you alter the formation, several roles may become unavailable or change meaning. If you are diagnosing a problem, leave the formation fixed and change one role or focus, then compare both views again.
How to choose between two plausible setups
There is no officially established universally best FC 26 formation. EA’s published material explains the intended mechanics and behaviors, but it does not provide comparative match evidence that ranks one formation above all others. Choose by comparing these four practical axes:

For a new player, start with a compatible preset and learn what each role does before making large changes. For an established squad, keep the defensive base that suits your best defenders and use roles to solve specific problems: lack of width, no central support, poor build-up outlets or insufficient protection after losing the ball.

With Ball and Without Ball squad views
These views expose the difference between the nominal formation and actual movement. Use With Ball to check whether your wide players stay wide, whether midfielders occupy useful heights and whether your striker has support. Use Without Ball to verify that an attacking role has not left an unprotected channel.
Tactical breakdown chart
The chart’s six categories—Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length and Endurance—give you a compact diagnostic. A high attacking profile is not automatically better; pair it with the role descriptions to see where the extra risk comes from.
Tactics codes
FC 26 supports saving and loading tactics codes. EA also says compatibility converts FC 25 tactics codes to FC 26 format. Conversion is a convenience, not a guarantee that the tactic will be identical: FC 26 adds roles, changes focuses and adjusts familiarity behavior. After importing, review every role, both tactical views and the compatibility warnings.

Common mistakes and fixes
“My players do not attack in the formation I selected.”
Check the With Ball view and the assigned roles. The formation controls the defensive base; it does not independently prescribe a second attacking formation.
“I used only Role++ players, but the tactic still feels poor.”
Role Familiarity measures fit for an individual job, not the balance of the whole team. Check width, central cover, passing outlets and recovery duties. A team full of highly familiar but overly aggressive roles can still be exposed.
“The preset changed after I edited it.”
That is expected. A preset is a starting arrangement. Recheck the in-game summary and any compatibility message after customization.
“A converted FC 25 code behaves differently in FC 26.”
Review converted roles and focuses manually. FC 26’s new roles, revised focuses and changed Out of Position behavior mean that a code can load successfully without reproducing every movement from the older version.
“My Box Crasher leaves midfield open.”
EA specifically notes slower defensive recovery for this role. Keep a covering midfielder or defender, reduce other forward-running duties, or select a less aggressive role if the transition space remains exposed.

EA said FC 25 launched with 31 roles and 52 role-focus combinations. Those are launch-era FC 25 counts, not current FC 26 totals. FC 26 adds four roles and changes focuses, so do not use the old figures to estimate the present role catalogue.
The four-role figure for FC 26 is a publisher feature count, not an independent performance statistic. Neither the official FC IQ deep dive nor the FC 26 gameplay notes establishes a measured win-rate advantage for a particular formation, role or preset. Your best choice depends on the defensive shape you need, the players available and the trade-offs you accept in possession and transition.
The useful takeaway
Build FC 26 tactics from the outside in: formation first for defensive structure, roles second for movement, focuses third for risk management. Use presets when you want a coherent starting point, Tactical Suggestions when you want player-specific adjustments without changing the formation, and the With/Without Ball views to verify what the tactic actually produces. Familiarity indicators help you select players, but a balanced base role is usually more valuable than forcing a theoretically perfect Role++ combination into a disconnected team.
