Dual-screen emulators show two virtual display areas and map host inputs—such as a finger tap, mouse click, or virtual cursor—to the emulated touchscreen. You can usually change how the screens are arranged, and some emulator cores let you increase render scale separately. Whether touch, graphics, and a particular game work as expected depends on the emulator build, frontend, platform, and title.
How touchscreen input works
A game that asks you to tap its lower screen needs two things from the emulator: a pointer position and a press or tap event. The host device supplies those inputs, and the emulator maps them to the emulated touchscreen.
- On a touchscreen host: a finger tap can act as the pointer and touch event when the emulator and frontend support touch input.
- On a computer: a mouse can move the pointer over the virtual screen and click to tap. Libretro’s Citra core documents mouse cursor input as the touchscreen pointer and mouse button 1 as touch. It also documents pointer-position and pressed-state mappings. Libretro Docs: Nintendo – 3DS (Citra)
- With a controller: a core may provide a virtual cursor and a separate button for touch. melonDS DS documents virtual cursor movement and virtual cursor touch as controller inputs. melonDS DS project documentation
These are documented options for particular cores, not universal controls for every emulator app. Menu names, calibration, and gesture behavior can differ by frontend and device. If touch is not working, first check that the game is receiving both pointer movement and a press event, then check that the frontend exposes those inputs to the core.

Screen layout controls where the virtual display panels appear in the emulator window; it does not change the game’s original output resolution. Libretro’s Citra core documents top-bottom, side-by-side, single-screen, and large-screen/small-screen layouts. - Top-bottom or side-by-side: keeps both screens visible, with the trade-off that each may take up less space.
- Large-screen/small-screen: makes one display more prominent while retaining the other.
- Single-screen: gives the selected display the available space, but hides the other until you switch.
- Rotated layouts: can suit games intended to be played sideways. melonDS DS cites Brain Age as an example of a title designed for that orientation.
For games that need frequent taps, choose a layout that keeps the touch-sensitive screen easy to reach on your device. A larger virtual panel may improve readability, but it does not make touch input more accurate by itself.
What “resolution” can mean
Resolution discussions often mix up three separate things: the console’s original pixel output, the emulator’s rendering scale, and the size or position of screen panels in the window. Changing a layout changes presentation; changing a render-scale setting changes how the emulator renders the image.

Libretro’s Citra core labels its option “Resolution scale factor” and documents choices from “1x (Native)” through “10x.” That setting is specific to the documented core; a standalone app or another frontend may not expose the same range. A higher scale can produce a larger or sharper rendered image on a high-resolution display, but it does not change the game’s authored assets or guarantee better performance. Do not confuse this emulator setting with Nintendo 3DS hardware behavior. Nintendo says DS and DSi games running on 3DS family systems display at a lower resolution than 3DS games; holding START or SELECT while loading a DS or DSi game displays it at original resolution. How to check whether a game is compatible
Compatibility is a title-and-setup question, not a blanket promise that every game will work perfectly. Check the specific emulator and build you plan to use, and consider these layers:
- Core support: confirm that the emulator supports the console and the features the game uses.
- Title status: consult the emulator’s title-specific compatibility information. An archived Citra compatibility page explains that some games require system files dumped from a 3DS. The archive is dated March 4, 2024, so treat it as historical guidance rather than a live guarantee. Citra compatibility list archive
- Frontend and platform: check whether your chosen frontend and host platform expose the needed renderer, pointer or touch input, and other core features. melonDS DS says its compatibility scope follows melonDS, subject to missing features, and that available features vary by platform and frontend. melonDS DS project documentation
- Required system data: verify whether the game needs system files beyond the game data, and use files obtained from your own hardware where required by the emulator’s instructions.
A compatibility label does not establish that graphics, audio, touch, saves, or performance are all flawless in your particular setup. If a listed game has a problem, consult the emulator’s current troubleshooting guidance for that build rather than assuming the compatibility entry covers every configuration.
