Drought can make Xylella fastidiosa symptoms more visible and can increase growth loss, but it does not affect every almond tree the same way. The clearest controlled drought experiment used Virginia creeper rather than almond. Almond studies show that cultivar, rootstock, pathogen strain, climate and orchard management can outweigh a simple drought-versus-no-drought explanation. One three-season study of the almond cultivar Filippo Ceo found high water status and no leaf scorch even under combined Xylella and drought stress, while other almond trials recorded substantial cultivar-specific yield losses.
Does drought make almond leaf scorch worse?
The best direct test of drought amplification was a greenhouse experiment by McElrone, Sherald and Forseth in 2001. It used a two-by-two design: Xylella-inoculated and uninoculated Virginia creeper plants were grown under high or low soil moisture.
What the controlled experiment found
Infected plants receiving less water developed scorch farther along their stems and had more severe symptoms than infected plants kept well watered. Drought and infection together reduced total leaf area, shoot length and node number. In one experiment, almost 40% of basal leaf area was scorched in low-water infected plants, compared with 8% in high-water infected plants.

The authors wrote, “This study is the first to verify the hypothesis that bacterial leaf scorch symptoms are enhanced during drought stress.” They also concluded that regular watering can help infected plants endure water stress. These percentages are Virginia-creeper results, not almond estimates.

How much of that evidence applies directly to almond?

Can water stress trigger Xylella symptoms?
Xylella lives in xylem, the water-conducting tissue. When soil moisture is low, the tree already faces greater hydraulic stress. A vascular infection can then make marginal necrosis easier to see or accelerate symptom expression, especially in susceptible trees. The Virginia-creeper experiment supports that mechanism, but almond responses remain genotype-dependent.
Drought and infection may also compound growth effects. In the controlled study, the combined condition reduced leaf area, shoot extension and node production rather than affecting only leaf appearance. For almond orchards, that means a tree can lose productive canopy development before a precise drought-specific yield penalty is known.

Why almond cultivar and rootstock change the outcome
Almonds are not a single uniform host. The 2024 Filippo Ceo study found no scorch and maintained relative water content of 82–89% under its tested combinations of Xylella and drought. The same report observed increased proline under Xylella stress and cultivar-specific stress-response gene patterns. Its low pathogen concentration, approximately 103 CFU mL−1, and one cultivar cannot be treated as a universal almond threshold or proof that drought is harmless.
Rootstock comparison from a five-year field study
Krugner and Ledbetter (2016) followed Sonora scions grafted on Nemaguard, Okinawa, Nonpareil and Y119. The study found the following pattern:

This is why a symptom observed in one orchard block should not be used to predict the response of every cultivar–rootstock combination.
What does Xylella do to almond yield and survival?
EFSA’s 2019 opinion summarizes five-year evaluations by Sisterson and colleagues (2012). Affected trees yielded 20% less for Nonpareil and 40% less for Sonora than unaffected trees in those evaluations. The cultivar labels matter: these are not a single almond-wide loss rate, and the figures do not isolate drought as the cause. Across the summarized observations, 9 of 183 affected trees died after five years.

No published statistic in the available evidence quantifies a drought-specific percentage yield penalty for almond across cultivars. It would therefore be misleading to convert the Virginia-creeper scorch percentages into an almond yield forecast.

Irrigation is supportive, not curative. USDA Agricultural Research Service material states that “Currently there are no effective management techniques that prevent trees from becoming infected.” Watering cannot be presented as a treatment that removes Xylella or reverses established infection.

- Reduce avoidable water stress. Check whether the affected tree is receiving the same water as surrounding trees and correct blocked emitters, uneven distribution or other delivery failures. The evidence supports preventing severe deficits, not a universal irrigation volume or schedule.
- Keep the root zone supplied without assuming excess water helps. Use orchard-specific soil and weather information to maintain adequate moisture. The goal is to avoid drought stress; no cited study establishes that saturation, over-irrigation or a particular irrigation frequency cures disease.
- Track the tree after irrigation changes. Record new scorch, shoot growth, canopy loss and yield. A reduction in visible stress after watering indicates improved water status, not elimination of the bacterium.
- Address vectors and planting material separately. USDA ARS identifies xylem-feeding sharpshooters and spittlebugs as spreaders of almond leaf scorch. Vector management and the choice of tolerant varieties or rootstocks are separate measures from irrigation.
Which almond rootstocks are less affected by almond leaf scorch?
In the Krugner and Ledbetter field study, Nemaguard had the lowest symptom severity, while Nonpareil had the highest; Okinawa and Y119 were intermediate. Nemaguard was not unaffected: infected trees had smaller trunks than uninfected trees, although some later showed remission and apparent pathogen elimination. EFSA describes a lower-loss scenario that combines low water stress, pest control, resistant peach × almond hybrid rootstocks and resistant varieties. That is a risk-assessment scenario, not a guarantee for any orchard.
Should an infected almond tree be removed?
Removal should be an economic and orchard-management decision rather than an automatic response to drought-related scorch. USDA ARS advises considering orchard age, yield loss and tree value. Compare the tree’s recent production and canopy decline with the cost of replacement, the expected productive life of the block and the performance of nearby trees on the same rootstock.

A practical way to interpret symptoms
- Confirm the pattern. Distinguish leaf scorch associated with Xylella from drought injury or other causes before making a removal decision.
- Identify the genotype. Record cultivar and rootstock, because the Filippo Ceo and Nemaguard–Nonpareil results show how strongly genetics can alter severity.
- Review water status. Determine whether the tree is actually experiencing a deficit, rather than inferring drought from symptoms alone.
- Measure consequences. Follow trunk growth, shoot extension, canopy area and yield over time, not just the most visibly scorched leaves.
- Choose a response. Use irrigation to reduce stress, vector control to limit spread and replacement decisions to manage long-term orchard economics. None of these steps should be described as a cure for an established infection.
