Drone delivery is an operator-run service, not a customer-piloted flight: after an order and drop-off point qualify, a delivery team prepares the parcel, plans a route, and dispatches an aircraft that uses automated navigation while people monitor the operation. At the destination, the drone checks whether it can safely hand over the package; if conditions are unsuitable, it may skip the drop-off or follow a contingency procedure.
What happens between checkout and delivery?
The exact workflow differs by operator, but a commercial delivery generally connects a customer’s order to a nearby delivery center or launch site. The customer does not fly the aircraft. The operator determines whether the order can be served, prepares it for flight, assigns an aircraft, and manages the trip under its applicable operating approvals. A delivery center may be purpose-built or integrated with a retailer’s existing operation; Wing, for example, describes integrating its system with business operations (Wing technology).
“Warehouse to doorstep” is a useful shorthand, but it does not mean every drone takes off from a large warehouse or lands at a front door. The aircraft may depart from a local delivery site, and the designated handoff point may be a clear patch of driveway or yard. Some systems lower a package on a tether; others use a pod or another delivery mechanism. The aircraft’s route and handoff method are part of the service design, not choices the customer makes in the air.

How a drone delivery works, step by step
1. The order and address are checked
A service first needs to determine whether it can deliver the selected item to the customer’s address. Eligibility depends on the operator’s service area, local permissions, package constraints, and operational conditions. Amazon’s published customer workflow, for example, lets customers in eligible areas choose drone delivery at checkout for qualifying items. Its item and weight restrictions apply to that service and may change; they should not be treated as universal drone-delivery limits (Amazon’s customer workflow).

If drone delivery is not offered at checkout, that does not necessarily mean the location is unsuitable for every drone service. It means the particular operator has not made that order eligible under the conditions it uses. Service availability can be specific to an address, item, and operating area.
2. The customer confirms a delivery point
For services that require it, the customer selects a suitable location on the property, such as a driveway or yard. Amazon says customers can update their chosen point. The map selection is not a guarantee that the actual spot will be clear when the aircraft arrives: a vehicle, person, animal, or other obstacle may make the location unsafe. The aircraft’s assessment at delivery therefore matters as much as the customer’s earlier selection (Amazon’s customer workflow; Amazon Prime Air technology).
3. The parcel is prepared at an operating site
Once accepted, the order is made ready for the operator’s aircraft and delivery method. The operating site could be connected to a retailer’s fulfillment activity or run as a dedicated center; the specific arrangement depends on the operator. The parcel must fit the service’s requirements and be secured in the aircraft’s designated carrying system. The cited services do not establish one package-loading method or a single package limit that applies across the industry.

4. The operator assigns an aircraft and plans a route
The operator selects an aircraft and plans a route using operational and airspace information. Wing says its system automatically chooses routes and coordinates flights; Amazon says its MK30 follows a planned route while sensing its surroundings (Wing technology; Amazon Prime Air technology). Route planning is not simply a straight line between the delivery center and a house: the aircraft has to operate within the applicable approvals and account for its surroundings and delivery plan.

5. The aircraft flies while staff oversee operations
Commercial delivery aircraft use substantial automation for navigation and other flight tasks, but automation does not mean the service operates without people. Trained personnel monitor flights from the ground, and the permitted scale and oversight arrangements depend on the operator’s authorizations. In the United States, commercial carriage of another party’s property beyond visual line of sight is tied to FAA Part 135 certification and operator-specific authority (FAA package-delivery overview).
Aircraft designs differ. The FAA describes fixed-wing, multirotor, and hybrid vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft in the package-delivery context. Amazon describes the MK30 as a hybrid aircraft, while other services use their own configurations. The design affects how an aircraft takes off, flies, and completes a handoff; one operator’s aircraft is not a template for all services.
6. The aircraft checks the handoff area
At the destination, the drone assesses whether the designated area is safe for delivery. Amazon says the MK30 descends above the selected point, checks for hazards, and does not touch the ground. Wing describes lowering the package on a tether (Amazon Prime Air technology; Wing technology). These examples illustrate different handoff designs, not a standard procedure used by every provider.
If the drop-off area is blocked or otherwise unsafe, the package may not be released there. That is a safety decision rather than a failed attempt to force a delivery into the selected spot. What happens next depends on the operator’s procedures and the conditions detected.

7. The drone leaves or follows a contingency procedure
After a successful handoff, the aircraft returns to its operating site or continues according to its approved operating plan. If an abnormal condition arises, the aircraft may return or make an approved contingency landing. Amazon describes returning to base when a delivery location is unsafe and using a Safe Contingent Landing for certain specified conditions; the operator then recovers and inspects the aircraft. Those are Amazon’s stated procedures, not a promise about how all services handle an interruption (Amazon Prime Air technology; Amazon Prime Air safety).
How delivery systems differ
Drone delivery is not one aircraft model or one parcel-release method. The useful comparison is between the operating model, aircraft and handoff mechanism, rather than assuming every operator flies the same route or carries the same kind of package.

Speed figures need context. Cruise speed and speed on a direct path describe different conditions, and neither figure establishes how long a customer’s whole order will take. End-to-end timing also depends on order preparation, dispatch, route, and conditions at the destination. Amazon says its orders can arrive as fast as 30 minutes, with most arriving around 60 minutes after checkout, in its 2026 service-expansion announcement; that is a company claim for a location-dependent service, not a general delivery-time guarantee (Amazon service-expansion announcement).

Who controls the flight, and what does U.S. approval mean?
In the United States, the FAA says Part 135 certification is the path for small drones carrying another party’s property for compensation beyond visual line of sight. The agency states that “Part 135 certification is the only path for small drones to carry the property of another for compensation beyond visual line of sight.” Certification is not blanket permission to fly anywhere: the operator’s specific authority and operating conditions matter, and a service being authorized does not establish availability at every address (FAA package-delivery overview).

The FAA’s page records several U.S. milestones: Wing received its first single-pilot authority in April 2019 and standard Part 135 authority in October 2019; UPS Flight Forward made a commercial medical-supply delivery in September 2019; Amazon began commercial operations in August 2020; and Zipline became a standard Part 135 operator in June 2022. The page also describes later authorizations through April 2025. These milestones show how commercial drone operations have developed in the U.S.; they do not establish that the same operators are authorized in other countries or that every U.S. community is served.

A drone delivery depends on several conditions aligning, not just on the aircraft being able to reach an address. The most relevant checks for a customer are:
- Service-area eligibility: The operator must offer service to the address under its current operating conditions.
- Item eligibility: The parcel must meet that service’s current item and package requirements.
- Usable drop-off point: The selected location must be suitable and clear when the drone arrives, not merely appear open on a map.
- Operational approval: The operator must be able to conduct the flight under its applicable permissions and procedures.
- Safe flight and handoff conditions: An abnormal condition or hazard can prompt a return, a declined handoff, or an approved contingency procedure.
Some of these are visible to a customer before ordering, such as whether the app offers the option and whether a delivery point can be selected. Others are assessed during operations. A customer-selected point cannot override an in-the-moment safety check.

When drone delivery is offered, treat the app’s eligibility and delivery-point instructions as specific to that service. Choose a point that can remain clear for the expected handoff, and update it if the service allows and the original spot is no longer appropriate. Do not assume that the drone will land at the front door: the handoff may happen above the ground or through a tether, depending on the system.

Likewise, do not assume that a published aircraft speed equals the time from checkout to arrival. The company may publish a service estimate, but range, speed, and promised arrival windows are different measurements. Confirm current availability and terms for the actual address and item because service areas, technical specifications, eligibility rules, and delivery conditions can change.
What drone delivery changes—and what it does not
A drone can move an eligible parcel from a local operating site to a selected handoff point without a conventional vehicle making the entire final leg. That model depends on a managed fleet, automated navigation, operational monitoring, and a site where parcels and aircraft can be prepared and dispatched. It does not turn every delivery into an unrestricted point-to-point flight, and it does not remove the need for human oversight or safety procedures.
The central trade-off is that delivery is constrained by the particular aircraft, package rules, route, approvals, and safe handoff conditions. If those conditions fit, the operator can complete an aerial delivery; if they do not, it may not dispatch the order by drone or may withhold the package at the destination. The customer sees a checkout choice and a delivered parcel, but the service in between is a regulated logistics operation.
