Drone delivery is the use of unmanned aircraft to carry packages or other goods to a customer or pickup point. It already operates in selected U.S. locations, but it is not a general-purpose shipping option: each service is limited by its approved area, aircraft, operating rules and delivery setup. For now, it is better understood as a potential complement to ground delivery than a proven replacement.
How does drone delivery work?
A delivery operator launches an unmanned aircraft from an approved hub, retail location or distribution center. The aircraft carries a package to a designated delivery spot or pickup point. The operator, rather than the recipient, manages the aircraft and flight operation; buying a hobby drone does not provide access to a delivery service.
There is no single standard model. FAA environmental-review records describe hubs or “nests,” distribution centers, pre-approved delivery locations and remote pickup infrastructure. Operators also differ in aircraft, service area, operating hours, payload and delivery method. A proposed or reviewed operation should not be taken as proof that the service is currently available to every household nearby. In the United States, commercial package delivery is governed by a specific FAA framework, and current availability is local rather than nationwide. The FAA’s Part 135 package-delivery materials are a starting point for understanding these operations. The agency says operators must also follow applicable state and local requirements for hubs and should inform communities about proposed operations.

To check a service in a particular place, look for the operator’s current service-area information and the relevant FAA decision or operating details. Environmental review for a proposed action is not itself a blanket authorization to fly anywhere, nor does it guarantee that residents can order deliveries.
On July 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the availability of a final programmatic environmental assessment and a Finding of No Significant Impact/Record of Decision for U.S. Part 135 drone package-delivery operations. That is an environmental-review milestone, not universal permission for any operator to fly in any location. The notice is available at the Federal Register.

What rules and safety issues shape drone delivery?
Different FAA rules apply to different operations
The FAA’s Part 107 explainer, dated July 6, 2026, covers a broad range of commercial and government drone operations below 55 pounds. It describes conditions under which qualifying property transport for compensation may occur within state boundaries when the aircraft, systems, payload and cargo weigh less than 55 pounds in total and other rules are met. Part 135 package delivery is addressed separately in the FAA’s delivery materials. Operators must comply with airspace and operating restrictions, and state and local requirements may also apply. Many delivery operations are intended to fly beyond the operator’s visual line of sight (BVLOS), so the operator cannot rely on direct visual observation of the aircraft throughout the route. Safe expansion depends on ways to detect and avoid other aircraft and coordinate use of the airspace. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) describes these concerns in its February 10, 2026 report on drone-delivery safety.

GAO’s February 4, 2026 review of FAA planning says the agency proposed BVLOS regulations in August 2025 that would require drones to detect and avoid other aircraft. GAO also identified a need for clearer roles and technical milestones for communications between drones and other aircraft. A proposed rule is not the same as an established, fully implemented operating system.
Local effects matter too
Hubs, flight routes and delivery points affect nearby communities. FAA environmental-review records include examples of noise mitigation and location-specific review; the Part 135 page also emphasizes community information. Whether a particular operation is quieter, cleaner or safer than a van cannot be assumed without a comparison for that route and system.

What limits wider use?
Service areas and delivery logistics
Operators serve defined areas around their facilities, and customers may need an approved place to receive a package. Aircraft capability, payload, hours and daily operating limits vary by operation. These factors mean that even a service operating in a region may not cover every address or every kind of delivery.

Cost and staffing
The FAA’s FY 2025–2045 forecast says that, under current regulatory arrangements, a visual observer is required to monitor airspace and that this makes drone delivery more expensive than traditional delivery methods. The forecast identifies onboard detect-and-avoid sensors as one development that could reduce per-unit cost by removing the need for a ground observer. Approvals and public acceptance
Expansion also depends on operational approvals, airspace integration and local acceptance. Noise, privacy and other community concerns may be relevant, but their effects depend on the system and location. The available official material does not establish a universal advantage over ground delivery on those measures.
Is drone delivery the future?
It may become a useful option for some lightweight, time-sensitive or hard-to-reach deliveries where an aircraft offers a clear route advantage. That is a plausible use case, not evidence that drones will replace delivery vehicles at scale. Wider adoption depends on safe BVLOS operations, dependable detect-and-avoid and airspace coordination, local approvals, acceptable community impacts and workable costs.
Forecasts should be read according to what they measure. The FAA expects drone package delivery to grow consistently over 2025–2031, while noting assumptions including increasing public acceptance and comfort. The forecast passage does not provide a single headline count of packages or delivery drones. Separately, GAO reported that the FAA forecast the total U.S. commercial drone fleet to exceed 1 million aircraft by the end of 2025 and reach 1.18 million by 2029. Those figures refer to the overall commercial drone fleet, not delivery drones alone or packages delivered.
How to assess a local drone-delivery service
If a service is advertised near you, these are the details that determine what it actually offers:
- Coverage: Which addresses or pickup points are inside the active service area?
- Delivery conditions: What package types and weights are accepted, and does the recipient need an approved drop-off location?
- Operating limits: What hours, aircraft and daily limits apply to the specific service?
- Authorization: What FAA decision or operating framework applies, and what local requirements govern the facilities?
- Community measures: What does the operator say about routes, noise mitigation and informing nearby residents?
These details are service-specific; approval or availability in one community does not establish the same service elsewhere.
