GOG games can be installed and played without GOG GALAXY for their offline single-player functions. Sign in to your GOG account in a browser, download a game’s offline backup installers, install it from those files, then launch the game executable. You still need internet access and your account to get the installers in the first place. Skipping GALAXY does not make multiplayer or other online features work offline.
What “DRM-free” means for a GOG game
DRM is technology that restricts access to digital content—for example, by requiring an online authorization check or a particular client to start a game. GOG’s DRM-free policy means that the offline single-player functions of games it distributes should not depend on GALAXY authentication, the GALAXY client, or an internet connection. After you have downloaded and installed a game, you can use its offline single-player functions without opening the client.
GOG stated in its 2022 DRM-free commitment that “The GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” That describes the current policy position, not a promise that every feature in every game works without a network connection. GOG’s developer documentation likewise says the full single-player experience should be available without a client or internet access, while distinguishing those functions from online services.
In practical terms, DRM-free does not mean that a game is detached from your account at every stage. You use the account to obtain the installers from GOG’s store. The policy concerns the game’s offline access after download and installation, not anonymous access to the store or a way around purchasing the game.

It helps to separate three moments: getting the files, installing the game, and playing it. The first requires reaching your GOG account and downloading the installers. The second runs the saved setup files. The third can be offline for supported single-player play. Calling the game “DRM-free” is about that last kind of access; it does not remove the account and internet needed to retrieve a copy from the store.
What works without GALAXY—and what may not
Think of a game as having offline play and connected features, rather than assuming that one DRM-free label applies identically to every menu and mode. A single-player campaign that does not rely on an online service is the clearest use case for offline play. Features whose purpose is to connect players or retrieve online data may require a network, GALAXY, or both.
- Offline single-player: GOG’s stated policy is that single-player offline mode remains accessible without GALAXY. The game’s own design and system requirements still matter.
- Multiplayer: Online multiplayer depends on connectivity. A game may also require GALAXY for its particular multiplayer implementation; check that game’s feature information if this mode is important.
- Leaderboards, online statistics, and other network services: These rely on the relevant online service and cannot be assumed to work while disconnected.
- Achievements: GOG’s developer introduction notes that some features, including achievements, may require GALAXY. Do not assume achievements will be recorded or synchronized when you launch the game independently.
GOG’s developer-facing material draws this distinction because “offline single-player works” and “every feature works offline” are different claims. Before relying on a specific mode or feature, check the individual game’s feature information. A DRM-free policy does not turn an online service into an offline one.
For example, being able to start a single-player game without a connection does not imply that an online leaderboard will load, that multiplayer matchmaking will be available, or that achievements will synchronize. Those are separate functions. If one is central to how you play, verify its requirements for that title rather than treating the DRM-free label as a promise about every menu item.

Install a GOG game without GALAXY
The browser method uses GOG’s offline backup installers. Downloading them is an online store transaction; installing from the saved files and then playing offline are separate steps. You need access to the GOG account that owns the game and enough storage to download and install its setup files.
- Sign in to your GOG account in a web browser. Open your game library and select the game you want to install.
- Open the offline installer downloads. Choose “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS” for that game. Download the required setup files; a game may provide more than one file, so get the set needed for its installation.
- Run the downloaded setup application. Open the installer and follow its prompts to install the game. This installs the game on your computer; downloading the installer alone does not install or launch it.
- Launch the installed game directly. Open the game’s installation directory and run its game executable. If a desktop shortcut opens GALAXY instead, use the executable in the installed game directory to start the game without the client.
GOG Support recommends using a download manager if browser downloads are corrupted. That is troubleshooting advice for unreliable or damaged downloads, not a requirement for DRM-free play. If an installer fails, first check whether the download completed correctly and whether you downloaded all the setup files the game requires; retrying a corrupted download is more relevant than changing how you launch the installed game.
The key distinction when troubleshooting is whether the problem is with the downloaded files or with starting the installed game. A damaged or incomplete download can interfere with installation, so check the files and retrieve them again if needed. If installation completed but a shortcut tries to open GALAXY, go to the game directory and run the executable there. These are different points in the process, and changing the launch method will not repair an incomplete installer.
Browser installers or GALAXY: which route fits?
Both routes can get a game installed, but they serve different preferences. GALAXY offers a client-centered way to install and update games and access supported connected features. Offline installers suit players who want a saved setup file and a client-independent route to offline single-player.

Choose GALAXY if a client is convenient for managing installations, updates, or supported connected features. Choose browser installers if you want to install without the client or keep the setup files for later. You do not have to make a permanent either-or choice: you can use GALAXY for convenience and still download offline installers for games when you want a separate copy of their setup files.
The choice is not between “online” and “offline” for every aspect of a game. It is a choice of installation and management route, followed by the features you use. You can install through GALAXY and later play the supported single-player mode offline, or use browser installers to avoid the client during installation. Neither route makes a network-dependent feature available when you have no connection.
Keep installer backups if you want a reusable copy
GOG says users can make backup copies of downloaded games. Keeping the offline installer files on an external drive is one option; it is optional, not a requirement for playing a game today. The installers can be useful when you want to reinstall without fetching the setup files again, provided you still have the files needed for that game and a compatible computer.

GOG does not specify a required drive type or capacity. The amount of storage you need depends on the installer files you choose to keep, so there is no single capacity that applies to every library. A saved installer is also distinct from a backup of saved games or other personal game data: the documented backup use case here is keeping downloaded game installers.

You do not need to buy new hardware just to install or launch a game without GALAXY. An external drive or SSD is simply one possible place to store installer copies if you want them available for a later reinstall. The practical requirement is enough storage for the files you decide to keep; GOG does not prescribe a particular medium, brand, or size.

GOG says it checks releases for DRM and expects single-player aspects to work without GALAXY or an internet connection. That is useful context for what its DRM-free policy is intended to deliver. It should not be read as a guarantee that every peripheral feature, online service, or future computer configuration will behave identically.
GOG’s developer introduction also reproduces the historical statement, “With GOG GALAXY, being online will always be optional,” attributed to a GOG GALAXY presentation on June 5, 2014. The more precise way to apply the policy today is GOG’s 2022 wording: GALAXY remains optional for single-player offline mode. Neither statement means that an internet-dependent feature can function without internet.
GOG’s Quality Assurance guidance describes checks for DRM and expectations that single-player aspects work without the client or internet. That supports the policy’s focus on core single-player access, but it does not erase the distinction between the game itself and services around it. A connected feature can have separate requirements, and an individual game’s information is the place to check when a specific mode matters.

Decide based on how you play
- You play single-player offline and do not want the client: Get the offline backup installers from your browser, install from the setup files, and launch the game executable.
- You value client-based installation and updates: GALAXY is available for those conveniences; using it does not negate the offline single-player option in GOG’s policy.
- You rely on multiplayer, achievements, or leaderboards: Check the game’s specific feature details and assume that relevant services may need internet access or GALAXY unless the game’s information says otherwise.
- You want to reinstall later without downloading again: Keep a copy of the downloaded installer files somewhere with enough storage for them.

A shortcut may open the client even when the game’s offline single-player mode does not require it. Open the installed game directory and run the game executable directly, as GOG Support’s offline-install instructions describe.
Will achievements, multiplayer, and leaderboards work offline?
