Drifting buoys track ocean currents by reporting their positions over time. Scientists calculate how quickly and in what direction a buoy moves, then use that movement as an observation of the water flow around it. A submerged drogue, or sea anchor, helps the buoy follow a targeted layer of near-surface water instead of being carried mainly by wind and waves. Sensors on the float can also report sea-surface temperature and, depending on the instrument, atmospheric pressure or other conditions useful to weather forecasting.
How does a drifting buoy measure an ocean current?
A drifting buoy does not directly measure the speed of surrounding water with a current meter. It measures its own location, typically reporting that location through satellites. Comparing successive positions over a known elapsed time gives scientists an estimate of the buoy’s velocity: both its speed and direction. Because the buoy is designed to move with the water at the drogue’s depth, its velocity is used as an observation of near-surface current flow. NOAA’s Global Drifter Program overview describes the instruments and how their observations are used.
From position fixes to velocity
Imagine a drifter whose position changes by 1 kilometre over a six-hour interval. Dividing distance by elapsed time gives an average speed of about 0.17 kilometres per hour, or 4 kilometres per day, over that interval. That is an illustrative calculation, not a reported observation from a particular buoy. In practice, scientists use the locations, times, and quality information supplied with a dataset. Direction comes from the bearing between positions, so a full velocity estimate has both a magnitude and a direction.
The estimate describes average movement between recorded positions, not every small turn or fluctuation along the route. The sampling interval matters: a longer gap can conceal short-lived changes, while a sequence of closely spaced fixes can show more detail. Dataset-specific sampling intervals and quality flags should be checked before making precise comparisons; they are not universal properties of all drifters.

Why the drogue matters
The surface float contains equipment such as batteries, a transmitter, and sensors. A tether connects it to a submerged drogue, which acts as a sea anchor and increases the instrument’s coupling to the water at depth. NOAA describes common Global Drifter Program designs with the drogue centered at 15 metres depth; a separate program overview describes an extension of approximately 20 metres. Those descriptions should not be treated as a single dimension applying to every design.
With the drogue attached, the drifter is intended to follow current flow near the drogue depth. That is why its motion is a useful current observation. It is not a measurement of the entire water column, nor does it represent every depth equally: currents can vary with depth and location.
Drogue status changes what a track means. If the drogue is lost, wind and waves have greater influence on the exposed float. The buoy still has a location, but its movement is less representative of the targeted current layer. NOAA therefore treats drogue status as important context for interpreting drifter data. A track segment after drogue loss should not be described as a clean measurement of the same current as a drogue-attached segment.

What measurements do drifting buoys report?
Location and sea-surface temperature are core observations for drifters. Other measurements depend on the particular instrument’s sensor package. Some may report sea-level pressure, salinity, wind speed and direction, or wave conditions. The presence of a measurement on one buoy does not mean every buoy carries the sensor needed to make it.

The float relays measurements through satellites to land-based systems. NOAA says real-time observations are distributed through the Global Telecommunication System (GTS) and used for forecasting and ocean-state estimation. The satellite link is therefore part of a data chain: an instrument observes its location or conditions, transmits the information, and the data are relayed for operational or scientific use.
How do drifting buoys help with weather forecasting?
Drifters contribute observations from the ocean, where routine measurements can be sparse compared with measurements over land. Their sea-surface temperatures and, when equipped, sea-level pressure readings provide information about conditions at the buoy’s location. Position reports also help characterize ocean movement. Forecasting and ocean-state systems can use such observations alongside other data; a single drifter does not forecast the weather by itself.

Temperature observations help describe the surface state of the ocean. Pressure readings add information about the atmosphere near the sea surface. Those are different measurements with different roles: a buoy that reports temperature but lacks a pressure sensor cannot supply a pressure observation. The sensor configuration must be checked before assuming which data a specific track contains.
NOAA’s descriptions say real-time drifter observations are distributed for forecasting and ocean-state estimation. NOAA’s Adopt-a-Drifter Lesson 3: Tracking a Drifter (2022) also explains that observations can help track currents and eddies, ground-truth satellite data, and inform climate and weather models. In this context, ground-truthing means using measurements taken at the ocean surface to compare with or evaluate satellite-derived information; it does not mean that one buoy validates every satellite estimate everywhere.
The practical value is cumulative. A drifter contributes measurements along its own route, and observations from many instruments and other observing systems can help build a broader picture. The available sources do not establish a current array-size or impact statistic, so no present-day fleet count or forecast-accuracy improvement should be inferred from the general description of the program.

How to inspect a drifter’s track and observations
NOAA provides public tools for exploring drifter locations and data. The Adopt a Drifter dashboard displays buoy locations and trajectories and, depending on the instrument, sea-surface temperature and sea-level pressure. Buoys are identified by WMO numbers, and the dashboard links to downloadable data. NOAA AOML’s Real Time Drifter Data and Graphs page explains access to real-time data and plotting.
- Open the dashboard. Go to NOAA’s Adopt a Drifter dashboard and locate the map or track display.
- Select a buoy. Use the displayed instrument information and its WMO number to identify the drifter whose path you want to inspect.
- Read the route as movement through time. A sequence of positions shows where the float traveled. The route alone does not tell you the current speed unless the corresponding observation times are considered.
- Check which observations are available. Review the instrument’s data or dashboard display for temperature, pressure, or other sensor readings. Do not assume an unlisted sensor measurement exists.
- Check drogue status and the relevant time period. A drogue-attached segment is intended to represent flow near the drogue depth. If the drogue is lost, interpret subsequent movement differently.
- Use the data product’s documentation for detailed analysis. Before comparing speeds or tracks, confirm the sampling interval, location quality information, and whether the data are real-time, quality-controlled, or interpolated. These details depend on the selected product.
A map is useful for seeing a broad path, but it can hide the details needed for analysis. For example, two tracks that appear to diverge might have different observation intervals, data processing, sensor packages, or drogue histories. Downloadable records and product-specific documentation are more appropriate when a precise velocity or scientific comparison is needed.

How to compare drifters or sections of a track
Before concluding that one drifter followed a different current from another, compare the conditions that affect what each track represents. NOAA’s program and dashboard resources establish that drogue status and instrument configuration matter; precise sampling and processing details must be confirmed in the selected data product.

- Drogue status and depth: Check whether the drogue was attached during the period being compared and what layer the instrument was designed to follow.
- Observation period and sampling interval: Ensure that position changes are compared over compatible time spans. Different time gaps can produce different apparent detail.
- Location and track quality: Consult the data product’s quality information before treating every reported point as equally suitable for a precise calculation.
- Sensor package: Compare like with like when using temperature, pressure, salinity, wind, or wave data; not all instruments carry the same sensors.
- Data status and processing: Establish whether the records are real-time or quality-controlled or interpolated. Processing can affect how a track should be interpreted.
These checks prevent a common mistake: treating every line on a map as a direct, equivalent measurement of current. A line is a record of float positions; the drogue, timing, sensor package, and data handling determine what conclusions can reasonably be drawn from it.
How is a drifting buoy different from a moored buoy?
A drifter is not fixed to the ocean bottom. It moves with the surrounding water, and that movement is the basis for estimating current flow. A moored buoy, by contrast, is anchored in place and is used to observe conditions at a fixed location. The distinction matters when reading a map: a drifting buoy’s changing position is meaningful data, not a failure to remain at a station.
Drifters are especially useful for observing conditions along a moving route. A fixed station can provide a time series at its location, while a drifter samples a succession of locations as it travels. Neither type of instrument answers every ocean or weather question; the appropriate one depends on whether a moving observation or a fixed-location record is needed.
What a drifter’s track can—and cannot—tell you
A track can show the buoy’s reported path and, with timestamps, support an estimate of its average movement between observations. With drogue status and depth known, that movement can be interpreted as an observation of near-surface flow around the drogue layer. Temperature or pressure readings, when available, add local environmental observations.
A track by itself does not reveal current speed at every instant, vertical current structure, or the exact conditions everywhere around the buoy. It does not prove that a buoy carrying a drogue lost none of its influence from wind or waves, and a drogue-lost trajectory is less representative of the target layer. Nor does a route tell you which optional sensors were installed unless the instrument’s data identify them.
For an introductory view, use NOAA’s public dashboard to follow a route and inspect the observations shown for that instrument. For quantitative work, use the downloadable data and the documentation for that specific data product, keeping the observation times, drogue information, sensor availability, and processing status attached to any interpretation.
