Dome Keeper alternates between two jobs: you mine an alien planet for resources and gadgets, then return to your dome before the next monster wave and use what you found to survive the attack. Every run is a time-and-risk decision: digging farther can improve your future upgrades, but staying underground too long leaves less time to prepare the surface defenses.
The cycle repeats on a procedurally generated map. Your selected keeper, dome and gadgets change how efficiently you mine, move resources and handle attackers, so the strongest approach is not a fixed build. It is a plan that keeps exploration, transport, repairs and defense in balance.
The loop in six decisions
The core rhythm described in the Steam listing and the Godot Engine showcase is easy to state but difficult to optimize:
- Choose a setup: select a keeper, dome and gadgets that define your starting options.
- Mine underground: drill through the procedurally generated planet to find materials and useful artifacts.
- Watch the attack window: decide when the value of another tunnel or resource is outweighed by the need to return.
- Come back to the dome: deliver what you collected so it can be used for upgrades.
- Defend the dome: operate its weapons against monsters approaching through the air or across the ground.
- Reinvest and repeat: spend resources on weapons, drilling, movement, repairs or gadget-related options before the next expedition.
The game’s defining question is therefore practical rather than purely tactical: do you risk delving deeper into the mine, or return to base and prepare for the imminent attack?

Starting a run: setup determines your options
Each run takes place on a new procedural map, so the underground layout and the opportunities it contains are not identical from one attempt to the next. Before mining, you choose among available keeper types, domes and gadgets. These selections alter the tools and priorities you carry into the cycle.
Keeper choice
The keeper determines the character you control and can change how a run approaches movement, exploration or combat. Treat the keeper as a strategic modifier rather than a cosmetic selection: a setup that helps you travel or work underground may support deeper expeditions, while another may make surface defense more comfortable.
Dome choice
The dome is both your base and the object you must protect. Its available weapon and defensive options affect how confidently you can leave the surface during the mining phase. A dome that handles a particular kind of attacker well can give you more freedom to invest early resources in drilling, while a less specialized defense may require earlier weapon upgrades.

Gadgets add additional options to a run. They can influence how you gather, transport or use resources, or how you respond when the monsters arrive. Because procedural maps change the value of different tools, a gadget that is convenient in one layout may be less important in another.
The sources do not establish a universally best keeper, dome or gadget combination. Compare a setup on four practical axes: mining speed or reach, the ease of carrying resources home, protection against different attackers, and the flexibility its special options provide.

Mining: convert underground time into future power
During the mining phase, you leave the dome and drill through the planet. The objective is to find materials and artifacts that can be brought back and converted into stronger equipment. Mining is not a separate resource-gathering mode; it is one half of the defense strategy, because every minute underground competes with the time available to prepare for the next wave.
Read the risk before drilling farther
Deeper exploration can produce more resources, but it also increases the distance you must travel to return. The decision is not simply “mine as much as possible.” Ask whether the next deposit is valuable enough to justify the return trip and the reduced preparation window. A short, safe trip can be better than a rich tunnel that leaves the dome exposed when the attack begins.

Finding a resource does not help until it reaches the dome. Carrying or otherwise moving materials consumes part of the same limited window. A route that looks efficient while empty can become awkward when you are transporting a load, so plan the trip back before committing to another branch.
Use the map as a changing plan
Procedural generation means you cannot memorize one optimal tunnel pattern. Identify promising directions, keep a clear route to the dome, and revise your target when the next attack is approaching. Gadgets and keeper abilities can make some routes or deposits more attractive, but the value of any choice depends on the current map and your defensive readiness.
Returning to the dome: the transition that decides a cycle
The return trip is where the game’s two halves meet. Bringing materials and gadgets home gives you the means to improve the dome, but arriving late can leave you trying to fight with an underprepared weapon system.

Use a conservative return trigger
Do not wait for a perfect haul if the attack is imminent. A sensible trigger is any combination of three conditions: the next useful deposit is far away, your route home is long, or the dome still needs time for upgrades and repairs. Returning with a smaller load preserves the ability to spend it before the wave.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Separate “found” from “usable” resources
Resources only become strategically useful after delivery. When deciding whether to continue, value the material you can actually bring back and spend before the next defense, not the material still sitting in a distant tunnel.
Defense: operate the dome against different threats
When the monsters attack, control shifts to the dome’s weaponry. Enemies approach through the air or along the ground, and they differ in movement and attack behavior. The goal is to repel the wave while preserving the dome so you can mine again.
Prioritize by approach and damage opportunity
Because attackers do not all move or strike in the same way, target priority matters. Watch which enemies are closest to an effective attack position, which are difficult for your current weapon to reach, and which can continue damaging the dome if ignored. A practical order is to remove an immediate threat, then switch to the attacker your weapon can damage most efficiently, rather than following a fixed enemy list.
Use the weapon’s coverage deliberately
Air and ground approaches may require different aiming decisions. Keep the weapon trained where it can interrupt the most dangerous approach, then reposition as the wave changes. The sources establish distinct movement and attack patterns, but they do not provide a complete enemy-stat table or universal priority order, so your target sequence must respond to the wave on screen.

Repair before the next expedition
Repelling a wave is not the end of the cycle. Repairs restore the dome’s ability to absorb the next attack, while weapon upgrades improve your capacity to stop enemies. If you leave the surface with a damaged dome or an underpowered weapon, the next mining trip becomes harder to justify because the cost of being late is higher.
Spending resources: choose between survival and faster growth
After an attack, resources delivered to the dome can be spent on upgrades. The main categories named in the official descriptions are weapons, drilling strength and movement speed; repairs and gadgets also affect what you can do during a run.
| Upgrade direction | What it improves | When it is most useful |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon and defensive upgrades | Your ability to repel incoming monsters and protect the dome | When waves are breaking through, repairs are frequent, or your next expedition would be unsafe without stronger defense |
| Drill strength | How effectively you can open routes and reach underground resources | When mining is slow, valuable deposits are difficult to access, or your map requires longer routes |
| Movement speed | Travel time between the dome and underground deposits | When return trips consume too much of the attack window or resource transport is limiting your haul |
| Gadgets | Additional tools and tactical options | When a gadget addresses the specific map, transport problem or enemy pattern in your current run |
These choices are competing investments. A stronger drill can produce resources sooner, but it does not stop the next attack. A better weapon can stabilize the surface, but it may leave your mining route slow. Spend according to the immediate bottleneck: survive a wave first when the dome is vulnerable; invest in drilling or movement when defense is stable and travel is the factor limiting your income.
A repeatable decision framework
Before leaving the dome, make four checks:
- Defense: Is the weapon ready to handle both air and ground approaches that your setup can encounter?
- Route: Can you reach a likely deposit and return without turning the trip into a race?
- Transport: Will carrying the material home take enough time to change the decision?
- Upgrade target: What single improvement would make the next cycle safer or more productive?
While underground, reassess after each meaningful find. If the next branch is distant or the attack window is closing, return. If the route is short and the dome is well prepared, another deposit may be worthwhile. This keeps the risk tied to a specific benefit instead of encouraging aimless digging.

Example cycle from departure to redeployment
- Prepare: inspect the dome’s current condition and select an upgrade priority, such as weapon strength or drill power.
- Depart with a route: choose a nearby tunnel direction that offers a realistic return path rather than drilling randomly.
- Collect: gather accessible materials or an artifact, noting how far you are from the dome and how much travel remains.
- Recalculate: compare the value of another deposit with the time needed to return and make the dome ready.
- Return and deliver: bring the haul to the dome so it becomes available for upgrades.
- Fight: operate the weapon against the most urgent air or ground threats, changing targets as their movement and attack behavior requires.
- Repair and spend: restore the dome as needed, then apply the resource to the upgrade that addresses your current bottleneck.
- Repeat with the new information: use the altered map knowledge, stronger equipment and remaining gadget options to choose the next expedition.
Common ways a run fails, and how to correct them
| Failure pattern | Why it happens | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Staying underground for one more deposit | The extra resource looks valuable, while the return and preparation time are discounted | Set a return trigger based on distance and the approaching attack; leave before the route becomes a crisis |
| Mining faster than you can transport | Drill improvements expose resources, but movement or carrying still consumes the attack window | Invest in movement or transport-supporting gadgets when travel, not discovery, limits your haul |
| Buying only offensive mining upgrades | More resources feel like the fastest path to progress | Strengthen the dome’s weapon or repair condition when the next wave threatens survival |
| Using one target order for every wave | Air and ground enemies have different movement and attack methods | Prioritize by current position, attack opportunity and the weapon’s effective coverage |
| Ignoring the map’s procedural differences | A successful route from a previous run is treated as a permanent solution | Re-plan around the current tunnel layout, deposits, gadget options and return distance |
How keeper, dome and gadget choices change playstyle
Think of the three selections as a package. A keeper that improves mobility pairs naturally with a plan built around frequent, longer trips. A dome with dependable defensive coverage can support more aggressive exploration, while a setup that is less forgiving on the surface rewards shorter expeditions and earlier weapon spending. Gadgets can fill a specific gap, such as making resource collection or a difficult defense situation more manageable.

Compare candidate setups using the same questions rather than searching for a universal tier list:
- Does the setup shorten the time required to reach and leave a deposit?
- Does it make resource transport less risky?
- Which air or ground approaches does its defense handle comfortably?
- How many different problems can its gadget options solve if the procedural map is unfavorable?
The answer can change from run to run because the map, available resources and incoming threats change. The game’s systems reward a setup that complements the situation, not a single combination that is always correct.
What the published sources establish about the game
The Steam description and Godot Engine showcase establish the alternating mine-and-defend structure, resource delivery, upgrades, gadgets, procedural maps and different air and ground threats. Raw Fury’s Xbox Wire overview, published December 9, 2025, described the game as a roguelike action title built around exploring an alien planet, collecting resources and gadgets, and upgrading the dome against monsters attacking in waves. That article reported more than two million players since the September 2022 release; it is a dated milestone, not a current player count.
Those sources do not specify universal wave timings, exact resource costs, complete enemy statistics or a ranked build list. Any precise schedule or “best build” claim should therefore be treated cautiously unless it is tied to a particular version and documented test.
