The UAE’s Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt (EMA) and NASA’s Psyche are designed around fundamentally different exploration strategies. EMA is planned as a multi-asteroid campaign: the MBR Explorer is scheduled to launch in March 2028, fly past six main-belt asteroids, then rendezvous with the red asteroid (269) Justitia for about seven months and release a planned lander. Psyche is already in flight after its October 2023 launch, completed a Mars gravity assist on May 15, 2026, and is traveling to one metal-rich asteroid for an orbital science campaign beginning in 2029.
In practical terms, EMA trades a larger number of targets for a complex sequence of encounters and a proposed surface mission, while Psyche trades breadth for sustained, close orbital measurements of one unusual body. EMA’s schedule and landing plan remain future intentions; Psyche’s launch and Mars flyby are completed milestones.
EMA and Psyche at a glance
The missions overlap in destination—the asteroid belt—but not in architecture, timing or scientific emphasis. The table separates what is planned from what has already happened.

What is the UAE’s Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt?
EMA is the UAE’s proposed deep-space campaign to study several asteroids rather than committing the entire mission to one object. The UAE Space Agency describes a six-year development phase followed by a seven-year flight phase, a stated total timeline of 13 years. Its current schedule calls for the MBR Explorer to launch in March 2028, with a three-week launch window. Those are agency plans, not completed milestones.

The planned route and timeline
Mission-team material hosted by the UAE Space Agency describes a journey of about 5 billion kilometres. The spacecraft is intended to use gravity assists at Venus, Earth and Mars to alter its speed and trajectory without carrying all the propellant that a direct route would require. The first asteroid encounter is planned for February 2030, with later encounters extending through 2034.
A gravity assist is a carefully timed planetary flyby. The spacecraft falls into the planet’s gravitational field and leaves with a changed heliocentric speed and direction, exchanging a tiny amount of momentum with the much more massive planet. The technique lengthens the route and imposes strict navigation requirements, but can make a multi-stop mission feasible.
For EMA, the assists are not an incidental cruise detail. They are part of the mission architecture: each planetary encounter has to place the spacecraft on the next leg while preserving enough propellant, power and communications margin for the asteroid sequence. A delay at launch or a change in the planetary geometry could force the team to revise encounter dates or target priorities. The published February 2030 date therefore describes the present plan, not a guarantee.
Which asteroids will EMA visit?
The mission-team document names six flyby targets:
- (10254) Westerwald
- (623) Chimaera
- (13294) Rockox
- (88055) 2000 VA28
- (23871) 1998 RC76
- (59980) 1999 SG6
After those encounters, EMA is planned to rendezvous with (269) Justitia. Target names and the mission plan can change as navigation and engineering work continue, so readers should verify the UAE Space Agency’s current mission page when dates or nomenclature matter.
The list also explains why EMA is a survey mission rather than a single-object observatory. A flyby can compare bodies that differ in size, color, shape and thermal response, but the spacecraft will pass each one only once. The observations will be strongest when the team combines camera images with infrared measurements taken from several viewing angles during the brief approach and departure windows.
Will the UAE land on an asteroid?
The plan includes releasing a lander at Justitia after the spacecraft has spent about seven months mapping the asteroid. The lander is to collect surface data and is being developed by UAE private-sector companies with academic partners. This is a planned operation, not a landing that has already been demonstrated or scheduled as a completed event.
The lander would add measurements that remote sensing cannot provide by itself, such as direct observations very close to the surface and, depending on the final design, local material properties. The currently described mission plan does not establish the lander’s mass, landing mechanism, sampling method or guaranteed surface lifetime, so those specifications should not be assumed. It is also not accurate to describe the project as a sample-return mission: the available plan calls for surface data, not a stated return of material to Earth.
Operationally, deployment is a separate challenge from reaching Justitia. The orbiter must approach at a controlled relative speed, determine the asteroid’s local environment, release the lander on a safe trajectory and maintain communications while surface operations begin. Each step is future work, so a comparison with Psyche should treat the lander as an added objective and risk, not as an achieved capability.
What will EMA measure?
The listed payload combines imaging and infrared spectroscopy:
- A mid-wavelength infrared spectrometer contributed by the Italian Space Agency.
- A high-resolution camera and a thermal-infrared camera from Malin Space Science Systems.
- A thermal-infrared spectrometer based on the Emirates Mars Mission EMIRS design.
At each flyby, these instruments would gather snapshots of different bodies under different viewing geometries. During the Justitia rendezvous, repeated observations could build a much more complete map and track how the surface’s thermal behavior changes with illumination and rotation.

The instrument mix supports complementary measurements rather than a single color photograph. Cameras can resolve morphology and surface features; mid-wavelength and thermal infrared observations can distinguish differences in composition and heat retention. Comparing the same classes of measurements across six flybys may reveal whether the targets share a family history or represent distinct formation environments. The mission description does not provide final spatial resolution, detector sizes or observation schedules, so those engineering specifications should not be filled in from unrelated spacecraft.

Why is Justitia scientifically interesting?
Justitia is described as unusually red in infrared. EMA is intended to test the hypothesis that it originated beyond Neptune and was later transported into the main asteroid belt. That origin is not established: the mission’s observations are meant to determine whether the asteroid’s color and spectral properties support or weaken the hypothesis.
A positive result would not simply label Justitia as an outer-solar-system refugee. Scientists would still need to connect its spectrum, thermal behavior, orbit and surface appearance with models of how small bodies moved during solar-system formation. A result that contradicts the hypothesis would be equally useful because it would show that a very red asteroid can form or evolve within the main belt.
What is NASA’s Psyche spacecraft studying?
Psyche is an orbiter sent to a single metal-rich asteroid in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. NASA’s working interpretation is that the object may include material from the core of a planetesimal, a building block of planets whose outer layers were stripped away. NASA also emphasizes alternative possibilities: Psyche could be another kind of iron-rich body rather than an exposed core. The mission is designed to distinguish among those explanations.
That distinction matters because no spacecraft has directly examined a large metal-rich asteroid in orbit. If Psyche contains core-like material, its composition could offer a natural laboratory for processes normally hidden beneath the rocky mantles of planets. If it is instead an iron-rich rubble body or another type of differentiated object, the result would revise the assumptions behind the core hypothesis. The mission’s value therefore does not depend on confirming the most dramatic interpretation.

NASA launched the spacecraft on October 13, 2023, from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. NASA lists arrival at the asteroid in August 2029, followed by about two years of orbital science.
Psyche uses solar-electric propulsion for its long cruise. Instead of producing a brief, high-thrust acceleration, electric propulsion applies a small thrust over long periods, conserving propellant while gradually changing the spacecraft’s velocity. That cruise approach is suited to a mission that must reach a distant asteroid and then reserve resources for orbital operations.
Arrival is not the same as beginning a single observation pass. The spacecraft must approach, determine the target’s gravity and orientation, establish safe orbital trajectories and then conduct a sequence of observations at different conditions. NASA’s stated two-year campaign reflects that sustained orbital strategy, whereas EMA’s early targets are designed for short flyby windows.
What happened at Mars?
On May 15, 2026, Psyche passed Mars at an altitude of 2,864 miles (4,609 kilometres) above the surface. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported that the encounter changed the spacecraft’s speed and orbital plane without onboard propellant and confirmed the route toward the asteroid. The report was dated May 19, 2026.

Don Han, Psyche navigation lead at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said: “We’ve confirmed that Mars gave the spacecraft a 1,000 mile‑per‑hour boost and shifted its orbital plane by about 1 degree relative to the Sun.” Principal investigator Lindy Elkins-Tanton said after the encounter: “We’ve been anticipating the Mars flyby for years, but now it’s complete. We can thank the Red Planet for giving our spacecraft a critical gravitational slingshot farther into the solar system.”

The flyby is a completed milestone, unlike EMA’s planned Venus, Earth and Mars assists. It did not send Psyche directly to its target by itself; it adjusted the spacecraft’s velocity and orbital plane so the continuing cruise could reach the August 2029 arrival opportunity.
Psyche’s instruments
- A multispectral imager for visible and near-infrared observations.
- A magnetometer to search for evidence of an ancient magnetic field.
- A gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer to identify elements in the asteroid’s surface and near-surface material.
Together, these instruments address appearance, magnetism and elemental composition. Repeated observations from orbit can connect an observed surface unit with its magnetic or elemental signature, something a single flyby would have less opportunity to do.
The spacecraft also carries NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications demonstration. That laser-communications experiment is a separate technology demonstration, not one of Psyche’s asteroid-science instruments. It should not be counted as an additional detector of the asteroid’s composition.

Many targets versus one sustained investigation
EMA’s six flybys provide comparative context. Even brief encounters can reveal differences in shape, color, thermal properties and surface geology across several small bodies. The trade-off is limited observing time and geometry at each target; a flyby cannot provide the continuous coverage available from orbit.
Psyche concentrates resources on one asteroid. Once in orbit, the spacecraft can observe the target from multiple altitudes and lighting conditions, repeat measurements and correlate images, magnetic data and elemental abundances. The approach is slower to build breadth but better suited to reconstructing one body’s structure and history.
Remote sensing, orbital mapping and a possible surface mission
EMA’s early encounters are remote-sensing flybys. Its Justitia phase is more ambitious: a seven-month rendezvous for detailed mapping followed by a planned lander release. That sequence creates additional operational steps—approach, orbit or station-keeping, lander deployment and surface operations—each of which must succeed.
Psyche has no announced lander in the mission architecture described by NASA. Its measurements come from the orbiter’s instruments, allowing the mission team to adjust observation campaigns as the asteroid’s real surface and gravity field become known. The absence of a lander reduces surface-deployment complexity, but it also means Psyche’s science must come from remote instruments in orbit.

Different scientific emphases
EMA is positioned to compare asteroid populations and investigate whether a red main-belt object could have formed in the distant outer solar system. Psyche is intended to address metallic asteroids and the processes that build differentiated planets. Neither mission begins with a fully settled story: Justitia’s birthplace is a hypothesis, and Psyche’s possible planetesimal-core identity is also uncertain.
Different partnership models
EMA’s payload and lander plan involve international and domestic cooperation: the Italian Space Agency is associated with the mid-wavelength infrared spectrometer, Malin Space Science Systems supplies the high-resolution and thermal-infrared cameras, and UAE private-sector companies with academic partners are developing the lander. Psyche is a NASA mission with instruments and a separate communications technology demonstration described by NASA. These arrangements show different ways to assemble capabilities, but they do not by themselves establish that one mission is more capable.
How do the trajectories compare?
| Mission | Trajectory plan or result | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|
| EMA | Planned Venus, Earth and Mars assists; approximately 5 billion kilometres; first asteroid encounter planned for February 2030. | A long, staged route enables multiple encounters but depends on future launches, planetary alignments and precise navigation. |
| Psyche | Mars assist completed May 15, 2026; asteroid arrival listed for August 2029. | The completed flyby changed speed and orbital plane and placed the spacecraft on its continuing route to the target. |
The two missions therefore use the same broad celestial-mechanics idea for different purposes. EMA’s planned sequence uses several assists as part of a multi-asteroid itinerary. Psyche’s Mars encounter was a completed cruise maneuver on the way to one destination.

Travel distance alone is not a measure of scientific ambition. EMA’s approximately 5-billion-kilometre route reflects repeated target opportunities, while Psyche’s route is optimized to deliver one spacecraft to one asteroid and keep it operating there. The meaningful comparison is how each route supports its science plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhich mission is more ambitious?
“Ambitious” depends on the metric. EMA has the more complex itinerary: six named flybys, a final rendezvous, a seven-month mapping phase and a proposed lander. It also attempts to compare multiple objects that may have formed in different environments. That breadth increases the number of navigation and operations milestones that must work.
Psyche is narrower in target count but demanding in scientific persistence. Reaching an asteroid, entering orbit and operating for roughly two years allows a layered investigation rather than a sequence of snapshots. Its solar-electric cruise and multi-instrument orbital campaign are optimized for depth at one destination.
There is no fair winner on every axis. EMA offers target diversity and the possibility of surface data; Psyche offers a completed launch, a completed Mars maneuver and a long orbital study designed around one compositionally unusual object.
Schedule, maturity and what could change
As of October 2026, Psyche has the execution advantage. It launched in 2023 and completed its Mars flyby in 2026. Its August 2029 arrival and two-year science campaign are still future events, but the spacecraft is already on its interplanetary cruise.
EMA remains earlier in the lifecycle. The UAE Space Agency’s six-year development and seven-year flight description, March 2028 launch window, February 2030 first encounter and later Justitia operations are milestones on a planned schedule. Launch dates, target nomenclature, encounter timing and lander details can change during development. Reporting a planned event as completed would give readers a misleading picture of mission maturity.
The same caution applies to scientific conclusions. No observation has yet established that Justitia came from beyond Neptune, and no observation has yet established that Psyche is an exposed planetesimal core. Both missions are designed to reduce those uncertainties.

For EMA
- A scheduled March 2028 launch, subject to change as development continues.
- Planned planetary gravity assists before the first asteroid encounter in February 2030.
- Six future flybys, with encounters described as continuing through 2034.
- A planned seven-month Justitia rendezvous and proposed lander deployment.
- Future observations that will test, rather than confirm in advance, Justitia’s possible outer-solar-system origin.
For Psyche
- Continued cruise after the completed Mars assist.
- Arrival at the target asteroid listed for August 2029.
- An orbital science campaign expected to last about two years.
- Measurements aimed at determining whether the asteroid is related to a planetesimal core or another type of iron-rich body.
Cost and hardware comparisons
The agency descriptions used for this comparison do not provide directly comparable total mission costs. It is therefore not responsible to call EMA cheaper or Psyche more expensive based on spacecraft names, launch vehicles or the number of instruments. EMA’s lander, international payload contributions and multiple encounters create a different cost structure from Psyche’s single-orbiter architecture, but no supported figure allows a ranking.
Likewise, the published material does not establish final EMA spacecraft mass, launch vehicle, lander dimensions, landing mechanism, sampling system or surface lifetime. Those missing specifications are not evidence of a capability gap; they are simply details that remain unspecified in the described plan.

The fairest comparison is not which mission is “better.” EMA is designed to maximize target diversity and add a surface element; Psyche is designed to maximize sustained orbital science at one scientifically unusual world. As of October 2026, Psyche has the maturity advantage because its spacecraft is flying and its Mars assist is complete, while every EMA encounter and its landing remain in the future.
Frequently Asked Questions
What asteroids will the UAE mission visit?
EMA’s mission-team document lists six planned flybys: (10254) Westerwald, (623) Chimaera, (13294) Rockox, (88055) 2000 VA28, (23871) 1998 RC76 and (59980) 1999 SG6. It then plans a rendezvous with (269) Justitia. Names and timing may change as development continues.
Will the UAE land on an asteroid?
The plan calls for releasing a lander at Justitia after about seven months of mapping. UAE private-sector companies and academic partners are developing it. The mission is planned, so no landing or surface operation has yet been completed, and final lander specifications have not been established in the described material.
What is NASA’s Psyche spacecraft studying?
Psyche is studying one metal-rich asteroid in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter. NASA says it may contain material from a planetesimal core, while also noting that it could be another kind of iron-rich body. A multispectral imager, magnetometer and gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer will investigate its surface, magnetic evidence and elemental composition.
Which mission launched first?
NASA’s Psyche launched on October 13, 2023, from Kennedy Space Center on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. EMA’s MBR Explorer is scheduled for launch in March 2028, within a three-week window, so it remains a future mission as of October 2026.
How do the gravity assists differ?
EMA plans assists around Venus, Earth and Mars as part of a route of about 5 billion kilometres to multiple asteroids. Psyche completed a Mars assist on May 15, 2026, passing 2,864 miles (4,609 kilometres) above Mars. NASA reported a speed increase of about 1,000 miles per hour and an orbital-plane shift of about 1 degree.
Is Justitia definitely from beyond Neptune?
No. Justitia’s unusually red infrared appearance motivates the hypothesis that it formed beyond Neptune and was later transported into the main belt. EMA’s observations are intended to test that idea; they do not establish it in advance.
Is Psyche definitely the exposed core of a planetesimal?
No. NASA considers that a possibility but also identifies alternative explanations involving another type of iron-rich body. The mission’s observations are intended to determine which interpretation best fits the asteroid’s composition and physical properties.
Which mission is more ambitious?
They are ambitious in different ways. EMA has more targets and adds a planned rendezvous and lander, creating a complex sequence of future operations. Psyche has one target but seeks roughly two years of sustained orbital measurements. There is no single metric that makes one universally more ambitious.
The Bottom Line
EMA is the UAE’s planned multi-asteroid survey with six flybys, a seven-month Justitia rendezvous and a proposed lander. NASA’s Psyche is already flying toward one metal-rich asteroid for about two years of orbital science. EMA emphasizes breadth and a possible surface mission; Psyche emphasizes depth, and its launch and Mars gravity assist are already complete.
