If 4K gaming is your main reason for buying a computer, a gaming PC is usually the more practical choice. It offers discrete graphics-card options, broad Windows game support and game-specific settings that make it easier to target high performance. A Mac Studio can run some demanding Mac-native games well, but results depend on the game, graphics settings and upscaling—and its ability to output a 4K signal at a high refresh rate does not mean a game will render at that resolution and frame rate.

Can a Mac Studio game at 4K?

Yes, in some games and configurations. The important question is not simply whether the Mac Studio supports a 4K display. It is whether the particular game runs on macOS and can render at the visual quality and frame rate you want on the Mac Studio configuration you are considering.

As of October 13, 2026, Apple’s announced Mac Studio lineup uses M5 Max or M5 Ultra. M5 Max can be configured with up to a 40-core GPU, and M5 Ultra with up to an 80-core GPU. Apple says graphics are up to 1.8 times faster than the previous generation under its stated test conditions. That is an Apple product claim about its own generation-to-generation comparison, not an independent 4K gaming benchmark or a comparison with a gaming PC.

Apple lists 4K output up to 240Hz for supported single-display arrangements, with variable refresh rate (VRR) and HDR support. Those are display-signal capabilities: they tell you what a supported Mac-and-display arrangement can send to a screen. They do not guarantee that a particular game will render native 4K at 240 frames per second (fps), or even run at a chosen quality preset. A display’s refresh rate, the game’s rendered resolution, any upscaling, the frame rate and image quality are separate parts of the experience.

What the numbers mean

  • Display output: The resolution and refresh-rate signal sent to the monitor. It can be 4K at a high refresh rate without the game itself rendering every frame at 4K.
  • Rendered resolution: The resolution at which the game creates its image before any upscaling. Native 4K rendering is a more demanding target than rendering at a lower resolution and enlarging the result.
  • Upscaling: A method that renders at a lower resolution and reconstructs or enlarges the image. It can improve performance, but it changes the rendering conditions and can affect image quality.
  • Frame rate: How many frames the game produces each second. A 240Hz monitor can refresh up to 240 times per second; that specification does not make the computer produce 240 game frames per second.
  • Compatibility: Whether the game and the launcher or other services it requires support the Mac. A powerful GPU cannot make an unsupported game work by itself.

What do the published Mac Studio gaming tests show?

The available published figures offer a useful example of how settings change performance, but they are not a head-to-head test of the current M5 Mac Studio against an equivalent gaming PC.

In a 2025 TechRadar review, a Mac Studio with M3 Ultra, a 32-core CPU, an 80-core GPU and 256GB of unified memory averaged 135.51fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with FSR enabled. With ray-traced reflections and medium ray-traced lighting, the reported average fell to 69.59fps. In a different configuration using more ray-tracing features and FSR Performance, the average was 60.83fps. These are reviewer results for a specific game, machine and setup—not expected results for every Mac Studio, every game or the M5 generation.

The figures are not interchangeable: the ray-tracing options and upscaling mode differ. They illustrate why a performance claim needs its settings alongside it. A frame-rate number without the game version, rendered resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing mode and upscaling method does not tell you enough to decide whether one system is faster for your use.

Tom’s Guide has also compared Cyberpunk 2077 results across tested Macs and Windows gaming laptops. It reported higher raw results for most of its tested Windows laptops than for the Macs, while noting that it had not tested every Mac configuration. Its cited raw Windows results omit upscaling, so they should not be treated as a direct comparison with an upscaled result. A Windows laptop result also does not establish how a desktop gaming PC will perform: laptop and desktop graphics hardware are different comparison points.

Taken together, these tests show that a Mac Studio can produce high frame rates in a demanding game under particular conditions, and that Windows gaming systems did better in most of the cited laptop comparisons. They do not establish a reliable performance ratio between an M5 Mac Studio and a comparable current desktop gaming PC. There is no basis here for saying that a PC is a fixed percentage faster, or for applying one Cyberpunk 2077 result to all games.

Mac Studio vs. gaming PC for 4K: the practical differences

Decision factor Mac Studio Gaming PC
Graphics hardware M5 Max configurations include up to a 40-core GPU; M5 Ultra configurations include up to an 80-core GPU. Apple’s up-to-1.8x graphics claim compares with the previous generation under Apple’s stated conditions, not with a gaming PC. Discrete GPU options make it possible to choose a graphics card for a performance target. The evidence here does not establish a particular PC GPU, price or frame-rate result.
4K display signal Apple lists up to 4K at 240Hz for supported single-display arrangements, plus VRR and HDR. This describes supported output, not a game’s rendered resolution or frame rate. Depends on the selected graphics card, computer and display connection. No specific PC configuration or output limit is established here.
Game and launcher support Check support for each game and its required launcher on macOS. A Mac can be a poor fit if a title in your must-play list is not supported. Windows support is broader for PC games, making a gaming PC the more practical default when access to a wide Windows game library matters.
Published gaming evidence A 2025 M3 Ultra test reports 135.51fps in one 4K Cyberpunk 2077 configuration with FSR, with lower averages in other ray-tracing configurations. It does not benchmark M5. Tom’s Guide reported higher raw results for most of its tested Windows gaming laptops than for the Macs in its Cyberpunk 2077 comparison. The results omit upscaling and do not directly compare an M5 Mac Studio with a desktop PC.
Best reason to choose it You want a Mac Studio for your other work and the games you care about are supported on macOS. You are buying primarily to play a broad selection of games and want to select hardware and settings around a 4K performance target.

The comparison is deliberately not a numerical ranking: the cited Mac test and Windows laptop results do not use a documented, identical machine class and rendering setup. To compare actual candidates, line up the same game and version, rendered output resolution, preset, ray-tracing mode, upscaling method, average and minimum frame rate, price and game or launcher compatibility. If one candidate is a laptop and the other a desktop, keep that distinction visible.

Which should you buy for your games?

Choose a gaming PC when gaming is the priority

A gaming PC is the safer starting point if the machine’s main job is to play games at 4K. Its discrete GPU choices give you a direct way to choose graphics hardware for the target, while Windows support and per-game settings offer more room to find a workable balance among resolution, image quality, ray tracing and frame rate. This is a practical recommendation, not a claim that every gaming PC beats every Mac Studio in every title.

Before buying, identify the exact games you intend to play and verify their current Windows support, then choose a specific PC and GPU rather than relying on the phrase “gaming PC.” The label alone says nothing about 4K performance. A desktop GPU and a laptop GPU should not be treated as equivalent just because they share a family name, and a result from one game does not predict another game’s performance.

Choose a Mac Studio if it is also your work computer

A Mac Studio can make sense when you need it for macOS-based work and your gaming list consists of titles that support macOS. In that case, gaming can be a valuable additional use, but it should be assessed title by title rather than assumed from the machine’s GPU-core count or display-output specification.

Do not buy an M5 model on the assumption that the earlier M3 Ultra test predicts its gaming results. The cited review offers evidence about its own M3 Ultra setup; the available information does not provide a controlled M5 Mac Studio versus equivalent desktop gaming-PC test. Apple’s generation-to-generation graphics claim does not fill that gap because it is not a gaming-PC comparison.

Make a must-play list before deciding

  1. Write down the games you actually want to play. Include the launcher or service each one requires if you know it; compatibility with the game alone may not establish that its full launch path works on macOS.
  2. Check current macOS support for each title. Do not infer support for one game from another, or assume an entire PC library will work on a Mac.
  3. Set a real performance target. Decide whether you want native 4K or will accept upscaling, what graphics quality matters to you, whether ray tracing is important, and what frame rate would feel adequate.
  4. Find results for the exact configuration where possible. Check the game, hardware configuration, settings and upscaling method behind every published number. Treat results from different machines or test methods as context, not a clean benchmark.
  5. Compare the full purchase against that target. For a PC, identify the specific GPU and whether it is in a desktop or laptop. For a Mac Studio, identify M5 Max or M5 Ultra and the GPU configuration. Do not assume a higher GPU-core count directly predicts a cross-platform gaming result.

How to read 4K gaming benchmarks without being misled

A benchmark is useful only when you can tell what was measured. When comparing a Mac Studio with a gaming PC, use a checklist rather than comparing headline frame rates.

  • Same game and version: Results from different games are not comparable, and game updates can change performance.
  • Same resolution basis: Determine whether 4K is the game’s rendered resolution or the display output resolution. If a system renders below 4K and upscales, the result is not native 4K rendering.
  • Same image-quality settings: Match the preset and any material individual settings. “4K” alone does not specify visual quality.
  • Same ray-tracing mode: Ray tracing can substantially affect performance, as the separate TechRadar results for the M3 Ultra demonstrate.
  • Same upscaling method and mode: Record whether upscaling is enabled and which mode is used. An upscaled result and a raw result should not be presented as an apples-to-apples comparison.
  • More than one frame-rate statistic: An average is useful, but minimum or low-percentile results can help reveal dips. The cited Mac figures are averages; they do not provide a complete set of frame-time or minimum-performance data.
  • Comparable computer class: A gaming laptop is not a desktop gaming PC. Identify the exact model and graphics configuration before applying a result to a purchase.
  • Compatibility as well as speed: A benchmark only answers how a tested system performed in that game and setup. It does not establish support for a different title or launcher.

If a review does not disclose enough of these details, treat its number as a limited observation, not a purchase guarantee. For the current Mac Studio generation, the published evidence cited here does not support a precise M5-versus-PC performance ratio.

What about a 4K high-refresh-rate monitor?

A suitable monitor is a separate part of the setup. Apple’s listed 4K/240Hz output capability applies to supported single-display arrangements and is useful only if the Mac, connection and monitor combination supports the intended signal. VRR and HDR support are also display features; neither one establishes that a game will produce a high frame rate or use HDR well.

For either platform, check the computer’s supported connection, the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and whether the display supports the VRR and HDR features you want. Buy around the game performance you can reasonably expect from the chosen computer, not just around the maximum refresh-rate printed in a display specification. A monitor capable of 240Hz can still show fewer than 240 unique game frames each second if the game renders more slowly.

Verdict: Mac Studio or gaming PC for 4K?

For a computer bought mainly for 4K gaming, start with a gaming PC and select a specific GPU and system based on the games and settings you care about. Its broader Windows game support and discrete graphics options make it the more straightforward route. Choose a Mac Studio when its macOS and work capabilities are also important and you have confirmed that the games you want support macOS. The published Mac test shows that demanding 4K gaming is possible in a particular configuration; it does not establish that the current M5 Studio is equivalent to, or faster or slower by a fixed amount than, a current desktop gaming PC.
