On a Google Pixel Tablet, the taskbar is an app-access strip that appears differently depending on your navigation mode. With gesture navigation, slowly swipe up from the bottom edge while an app is open. With 3-button navigation, Google says the taskbar remains displayed. You can also open it and enable Always show Taskbar to keep it visible.
The detailed instructions below are for Pixel Tablet software. Other Android tablets may use different labels, gestures, or taskbar behavior, and some Pixel instructions require Android 14 or Android 15.
What the Android tablet taskbar does
The taskbar is a quick way to reach apps without returning to the Home screen. It can contain apps you have pinned, suggested apps when you have not pinned any, and a control for browsing all installed apps. Selecting an app opens it or switches you to an app that is already running.
On Pixel Tablet, the taskbar is part of the system navigation experience rather than a separate app. Its visibility is controlled by the navigation mode and by an optional setting that keeps it on screen. When does the taskbar appear?
Gesture navigation
When gesture navigation is active and an app is open, slowly swipe upward from the bottom edge of the display. The taskbar slides into view. You can then tap a pinned or suggested app, or use the control that opens the full app list.
A slow swipe matters: a quick swipe can be interpreted as the Home gesture instead of a request to reveal the taskbar. Start at the very bottom edge and move upward deliberately.
3-button navigation
With 3-button navigation enabled, Google says the taskbar is always displayed. The bottom navigation area includes Back, Home, and app-switching buttons. Because the bar is persistent in this mode, you do not need the upward gesture just to make it appear.

Gesture-navigation users can make the taskbar persistent. Open it with the slow upward swipe, touch and hold the divider line on the taskbar, and turn on Always show Taskbar in the pop-up menu. The taskbar then remains accessible instead of being hidden until the next swipe.

How to choose gesture or 3-button navigation
On a Pixel Tablet, open Settings > System > Navigation mode. Select the navigation style you want, then follow the on-screen instructions if Android displays a short tutorial. Google describes the behavior of both modes in Use gestures on your Pixel Tablet.

Choose gesture navigation when
- You prefer an uncluttered display with navigation controls hidden until needed.
- You are comfortable using a slow upward swipe to reveal the taskbar.
- You want the option to keep the taskbar available through Always show Taskbar without changing to 3-button navigation.
Choose 3-button navigation when
- You want the taskbar and navigation controls visible continuously.
- You prefer dedicated Back, Home, and app-switching buttons instead of edge gestures.
- You find it easier to switch apps by tapping a visible control than by remembering a swipe.
These choices change how the Pixel Tablet exposes the taskbar; they do not install a different app launcher or alter which apps are installed.
How to use the taskbar to open and switch apps
- Open any app on the Pixel Tablet.
- If you use gesture navigation and the taskbar is not pinned, slowly swipe up from the bottom edge. In 3-button navigation, look at the bottom of the screen for the already-visible bar.
- Tap a pinned app or a suggested app. Android opens it, or switches to it if it is already running.
- To browse beyond the apps shown on the taskbar, tap the control for viewing all apps and select the app you need.
Google marks some app-finding and app-switching guidance as applying to Android 15 and later. If your Pixel Tablet runs an earlier release, a label or gesture may differ even though the taskbar concept is the same. The current Pixel Tablet app instructions are at Google’s help page.

How to pin apps to the taskbar
Pinning puts frequently used apps in a predictable location. The app must first be found from the Home screen.
- Go to the middle of the Home screen.
- Swipe up to display your apps.
- Touch and hold the app you want to keep available.
- Drag the app to the taskbar and release it.
If no apps are pinned, the taskbar can show suggested apps instead. Suggestions are not the same as permanent pins: pin an app when you want it to stay in the taskbar.
Create a taskbar folder
Drag one app onto another app that is already pinned. Android groups the two pinned apps into a folder. This lets you keep several related apps available while using less taskbar space. Organize your pinned apps
- Keep your most-used apps directly on the taskbar for one-tap access.
- Use folders for categories such as communication, work, or media when the bar becomes crowded.
- Leave less frequently used apps unpinned and open them through the all-apps control.
Google labels parts of this Home-screen customization guidance as Android 14 and later. The exact arrangement and available controls can therefore depend on the tablet’s Android version.

Taskbar versus the Home screen and app switcher
The taskbar is not a replacement for the Home screen. The Home screen is where you arrange app icons, shortcuts, and widgets; the taskbar is a compact access surface that can remain available while another app is open.
It is also not identical to the list of recent apps. The taskbar can show pinned or suggested apps regardless of whether they were recently used, while the app-switching controls are part of navigation. Tapping an app in the taskbar is intended to open or switch to that app quickly rather than provide a full history of every recent window.
What desktop windowing changes
Android has a separate desktop-windowing mode for supported large-screen devices. Google says availability and the experience vary by device, so ordinary taskbar access does not require desktop windowing.
When a supported device is connected to an external keyboard and trackpad, apps can open automatically in desktop-windowing mode. In that environment, minimizing a window sends it to the taskbar, where it can be restored. This gives the taskbar a second role: it can hold minimized windows as well as provide app access.

Do not treat a keyboard, trackpad, or external display as a prerequisite for the normal Pixel Tablet taskbar. They are mentioned in Google’s desktop-windowing guidance only for that optional multitasking scenario. Check the navigation mode
Open Settings > System > Navigation mode. If gesture navigation is selected, use a slow swipe that begins at the bottom edge while an app is open. If 3-button navigation is selected, look for the persistent bar at the bottom instead of waiting for a gesture.
Try the persistent setting
Reveal the taskbar, touch and hold its divider line, and verify that Always show Taskbar is enabled. If the option is off, the bar will hide until you invoke it again.
Use the correct starting point
For gesture navigation, begin at the display’s bottom edge and move upward slowly. Starting too high or swiping too quickly can trigger another navigation action, such as going Home, rather than opening the taskbar.
Confirm the software context
Some instructions are version-gated: Google identifies certain app-switching steps as Android 15 and up and Home-screen customization steps as Android 14 and up. A Pixel Tablet on an older release may not show every control described in the current help pages.

Account for non-Pixel differences
The cited procedures are Pixel Tablet instructions, not a universal specification for every Android tablet. On a tablet from another manufacturer, check that device’s navigation settings and support documentation. Menu names, whether a taskbar exists, how it is summoned, and whether it can be pinned may all differ.
Practical ways to use the taskbar
Fast two-app switching
Pin the two apps you use together, such as a browser and a notes app. Reveal the taskbar with the bottom swipe when using gestures, then tap the other app instead of returning to Home and searching for it.
Keeping the display clear
Leave Always show Taskbar disabled if you want the full screen available for reading, drawing, or video. Invoke the bar only when you need to change apps.
Using folders instead of removing useful apps
When several apps compete for limited taskbar space, group them by dragging one pinned app onto another. You retain one-tap access to the group without filling the entire bar with individual icons.
Restoring minimized desktop windows
In supported desktop-windowing mode, use the taskbar to return to a window you minimized. This is distinct from simply launching the app again: the taskbar is holding the minimized window in that desktop session.
