Nuo brings block-based notes, task management, and calendar context into one app. Its builder, Pranav Chandra, describes a design that encrypts private-group content in the browser, uses a recovery phrase to restore access, and packages the web app for Google Play as an Android Trusted Web Activity rather than building a separate Kotlin interface. Those choices shape what the app can do—and what its security and sync model do not claim to do.
What Nuo brings together
Chandra describes Nuo as a block editor paired with a task manager. Notes can contain reorderable blocks, checklists, code blocks, tables, slash-command insertions, and embedded tasks. Tasks have a My Day view, priorities, due dates, groups, and lists. Google Calendar events appear in the app, while tasks with due dates can be exported to the calendar.
The design addresses a familiar workflow problem: keeping notes, to-dos, and calendar information in separate places. Nuo also distinguishes ordinary shared groups from private, encrypted groups. The encryption boundary is central to that distinction: according to Chandra, private-group content is encrypted in the browser before it is sent to the server.
How the reported encryption and recovery design works
Chandra says the browser generates a random 256-bit master key, which encrypts secure rows with AES-256-GCM. The server stores ciphertext for those rows. A passphrase is processed with PBKDF2-SHA256 at 600,000 iterations to derive a wrapping key; that key protects the master key. As a result, changing the passphrase can involve rewrapping the master key rather than encrypting every secure row again.

Recovery depends on a 24-word BIP-39 phrase that encodes the master key. That makes recovery material part of the security boundary: a user who loses access to the account needs the phrase to restore the key, while someone who obtains it may be able to regain access to the encrypted content. Keep it somewhere private and durable, separate from the device or account it is meant to recover.
Chandra says secure groups cannot be shared because doing so would require user-to-user key exchange. He also describes database checks intended to reject secure records that lack ciphertext or have plaintext titles. These are the developer’s account of the design, not independently verified security guarantees. The available source does not establish that Nuo has undergone an external code review or security audit, so the implementation details should not be treated as an audit result.

Why calendar sync is intentionally one-way
Nuo does not try to keep every event and task synchronized in both directions. The author assigns ownership instead: Google Calendar owns the events Nuo reads and displays; Nuo owns its tasks. Tasks with due dates are exported as one daily digest event for each date, and Nuo rebuilds a day’s digest when tasks for that date change.
If a digest disappears from Google Calendar, Nuo detects that and asks whether to delete the related tasks or keep them. This preserves a clear distinction between the calendar’s events and Nuo’s task records instead of treating every change as a command to mirror data both ways.

For fetching tasks across multiple dates, Chandra describes querying with a database window for each requested day rather than issuing one query per date or requesting one oversized date range. That is an implementation choice reported by the builder, not a published performance comparison.
How a PWA becomes an Android app without a Kotlin UI
The release path Chandra describes starts with a mobile-first progressive web app (PWA), including a service worker, an install manifest, and a persisted query cache. Bubblewrap then packages the site as a Trusted Web Activity (TWA), an Android container that displays the web experience full-screen in Chrome. The web app and Android package can therefore use the same application codebase, rather than a separately authored Kotlin interface.

- Digital Asset Links: the association between the website and Android app requires the relevant signing fingerprints, including both the upload key and the Google Play app-signing key.
- Version codes: an Android release needs a versionCode higher than the version already published in Play.
- Release optimization: check Bubblewrap’s release defaults rather than assuming its generated package is configured as intended.
These are practical lessons from the builder’s account, not a version-specific setup guide. Android publishing tools and Play requirements can change, so verify current instructions before applying them to a new release.

What the reported tests cover—and what they do not prove
Chandra reports more than 800 Vitest unit tests and Playwright flows exercised in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. He also describes PostgreSQL CHECK constraints for encrypted-data rules, including requiring ciphertext and prohibiting a plaintext title on secure rows, as well as preventing secure groups from being shared.
Date handling received particular attention: the author says a UTC-only test setup had hidden a due-date shift, so tests were expanded to cover seven timezones, with Playwright emulation for India and Los Angeles. These details indicate the kinds of failure modes the developer chose to test. They are self-reported project figures and safeguards, not independent test results or proof that all edge cases are covered.
Availability and how to interpret the claims
Chandra’s article says Nuo is available on Google Play and at nuo-app.vercel.app. It also describes the app as free, ad-free, and not selling user data. Those are the author’s statements; the source does not independently establish current store availability, uptime, feature status, or privacy-policy compliance.
The account closes by inviting feedback: “Where does the recovery-phrase flow feel scary? What would make you trust an encrypted notes app (or not)?” That is the builder’s question, not evidence about how users generally feel.
