Death Stranding multiplayer is built around asynchronous cooperation: you usually help other porters by leaving useful structures and items in the world, rather than by joining them in a shared session. Other players’ ladders, bridges, and resources can aid your journey, and likes and strand contracts add ways to recognize or prioritize those contributions.
How does Death Stranding multiplayer work?
The game’s Social Strand System connects players through traces they leave behind. You might find and use a ladder placed by another porter, then give it a like; structures you build can likewise appear in someone else’s world and help with their route or deliveries. The official Kojima Productions beginner’s guide describes this indirect sharing as a core part of the system.
That makes the multiplayer asynchronous: players’ contributions can affect one another’s journeys without requiring everyone to play at the same time. PlayStation’s game overview also describes donating resources to rebuild structures in your world and others’.

Can you see other players in Death Stranding?
The documented social loop centers on structures, items, and other contributions left in the world—not on meeting other players for ordinary co-op. The official sources describe indirect interactions but do not establish whether a player avatar can ever be encountered directly in every mode or circumstance, so it is safest to understand the standard system as cooperation through shared-world traces.

What can other players use, and how do likes work?
Structures and items
Another porter’s ladder or bridge can give you a way through difficult terrain. Left-behind items can also be useful along your route. In turn, structures and items you leave may assist another player. The system’s value is practical: a well-placed contribution can save another porter effort or make a journey more manageable.
Likes and resource donations
You can like helpful structures that appear in your world. PlayStation describes likes as recognition for the players who contributed them. You can also donate materials to help rebuild structures, including structures in other players’ worlds. These are separate forms of participation: likes acknowledge a contribution, while donations provide resources.

What do strand contracts do?
Once Bridge Links is available in the Cufflinks menu, you can form strand contracts with other players. The official guide says a contract increases the chance that each player’s structures appear in the other’s world, making it a way to prioritize a connection. It does not publish exact appearance probabilities, explain the selection algorithm, or specify how long a contract’s effect persists.
Are all of Death Stranding’s online activities asynchronous?
No. The Director’s Cut also includes competitive online activities such as ranked firing-range drills and racetrack time attacks. These are distinct from the main Social Strand loop of sharing structures, items, and resources. Kojima Productions identifies the Director’s Cut as available on PS5 and PC and includes the Social Strand System in its description.

Do you need internet to use the social features?
PlayStation says internet access and a PlayStation account are required for the social features described on its product page. Requirements can depend on the platform and edition, so check the listing and service terms for the specific version you play.
What does “10 million porters” mean?
On November 8, 2022, Kojima Productions announced that more than 10 million porters had connected across PS4, PS5, and PC, including access through subscription services. This is a cumulative historical milestone, not a current concurrent-player figure or a count of players online at one time. The original game launched on PS4 in 2019 and arrived on PC in 2020; the Director’s Cut launched in 2021. See the Kojima Productions milestone announcement for the dated platform context.

Why is the multiplayer designed this way?
In a 2017 pre-release interview, Hideo Kojima described wanting a connection “that doesn’t focus on a weapon like a gun” and said the online component would differ from what players might expect from an online game.
