In holographic theories such as AdS/CFT, entanglement in a quantum theory on a boundary is related to the geometry of a gravitational space, or “bulk,” in a higher dimension. The Ryu–Takayanagi proposal makes that connection precise in suitable settings: the entanglement entropy of a boundary region is given by the area of a corresponding minimal surface in the bulk, divided by four times the bulk Newton constant. This lets physicists use quantum information to probe geometry—but it does not show that every entangled pair of objects creates spacetime.
What entanglement entropy measures
Entanglement is a kind of quantum correlation between parts of a system. To ask how strongly a chosen part is entangled with the rest, physicists describe that part using a reduced density matrix: a mathematical representation obtained by accounting for the degrees of freedom outside the part being studied. The von Neumann entropy of that reduced density matrix is called the entanglement entropy.
Imagine dividing a whole system into a region A and everything outside it, often called its complement. If the full system is in a pure quantum state, the entropy of A characterizes its entanglement with the complement. It is not a direct measure of the size, shape, or distance of region A. On its own, it is a quantum-information quantity; the connection to geometry comes from the particular holographic framework in which that quantity is interpreted.

That distinction matters. Entanglement entropy is defined within quantum theory, while area is a geometric quantity. Relating them is a substantive claim about how a specific gravitational description encodes information—not a general identity that applies to any pair of quantum systems.

In other words, the entropy belongs first to the chosen subsystem in the boundary theory. It does not independently tell you the bulk shape or provide a direct measurement of ordinary spatial distance. Its geometric meaning enters when the boundary theory is one of the theories with the appropriate holographic gravitational description.
How holography connects a boundary theory to a bulk
The central setting is the AdS/CFT correspondence. In broad terms, it relates a conformal field theory (CFT) on a boundary to a gravitational theory in a higher-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk. A region chosen in the boundary theory can therefore be associated, through the holographic description, with a region or geometric feature in the bulk.
The Ryu–Takayanagi proposal links one particular boundary quantity—entanglement entropy—to one particular bulk quantity—the area of a minimal surface. In schematic form, the relation is:
Recommended Free Tools
S(A) = Area(γA)/(4GN)
Here, S(A) is the entanglement entropy of boundary region A; γA is the bulk minimal surface anchored to the boundary of A; Area(γA) is that surface’s area; and GN is the Newton constant in the bulk gravitational theory. The formula is a theoretical prescription for appropriate holographic settings, not a statement that one can apply unchanged to every quantum system or spacetime.
“Anchored” describes how the surface meets the boundary: its edge is tied to the boundary of the selected region. The surface then extends into the bulk. The prescription asks for a minimal-area surface satisfying the relevant boundary condition. The resulting area, when divided by 4GN, corresponds to the boundary region’s entropy.
The equation therefore packages a comparison between two descriptions. On one side is a measure of correlations in a boundary subsystem; on the other is the area of a geometric object in the gravitational bulk, with the bulk Newton constant setting the factor in the relation. It is not saying that entropy and area are interchangeable in every setting. Rather, the proposal specifies how they correspond in the holographic cases where it applies.

Why an area can reveal information about geometry
The key implication is that the boundary theory’s pattern of entanglement carries information about a geometric feature of the bulk. If a boundary region’s entanglement entropy is encoded by a bulk surface area, then the entropy constrains that area. In this sense, quantum information in the boundary theory can serve as a probe of bulk geometry.
A useful analogy is a map: measurements made in one description can provide clues about a structure represented in another. The analogy should not be taken literally. Entanglement is not a physical mesh of threads, nor does the proposal say that ordinary objects are connected by tiny geometric links. It says that, within the holographic framework, a boundary information-theory quantity is related to a bulk geometric quantity.
This connection motivates the broader idea that spacetime geometry may emerge from patterns of entanglement. “May emerge” is important wording: the proposal gives physicists a way to investigate that idea in holography. It does not establish a universal mechanism for how all spacetime arises. The precise relation depends on the theory and setting, and the framework’s assumptions remain important.
The map analogy is also useful for understanding the direction of the inference. If entanglement data in a boundary theory are related to areas in the bulk, those data can help physicists detect or constrain features of the bulk geometry. That is different from claiming that a single entangled pair supplies a visible piece of space, or that one can reconstruct everyday spacetime simply by cataloguing arbitrary particle pairs.
What the original proposal established
The AdS3/CFT2 example
Ryu and Takayanagi introduced their proposal in 2006 in “Holographic Derivation of Entanglement Entropy from AdS/CFT.” In the AdS3/CFT2 example—a three-dimensional bulk associated with a two-dimensional boundary conformal field theory—the relevant minimal surface is a geodesic. A geodesic is the shortest-path analogue of a straight line in curved geometry. The authors reported that their prescription reproduces the known entanglement entropy result for the two-dimensional CFT in this example.

This agreement is a concrete check of the proposal in a specific setting. It supports the relation between the boundary entropy and bulk geometry there; it does not by itself prove that the same prescription applies to every quantum theory or every spacetime.

Higher-dimensional settings
The original paper also develops higher-dimensional cases. There, the bulk object is generally described as a minimal surface rather than a geodesic: a geodesic is the one-dimensional version of the relevant geometric idea, while a minimal surface can have more dimensions. The boundary region still determines where the bulk surface is anchored, and the surface’s area enters the entropy relation.
The distinction between the AdS3 example and broader cases is useful when assessing what the proposal says. The geodesic example gives an especially direct illustration, while the general language of minimal surfaces expresses the higher-dimensional prescription. Neither should be mistaken for a claim about a boundary theory with no holographic gravitational dual.
These examples also show why it helps to separate the geometric object from the claim’s scope. In the three-dimensional bulk example, the relevant object is a geodesic; in higher dimensions, the prescription is framed in terms of a minimal surface. The shared feature is the link between a boundary region’s entropy and the area associated with a bulk surface, not an assertion that all holographic descriptions have the same simple geometry.
How to interpret the idea without overclaiming
There are three different levels of claim that are easy to conflate:
- The definition: entanglement entropy is the von Neumann entropy of a subsystem’s reduced density matrix.
- The holographic prescription: in suitable AdS/CFT settings, the entropy of a boundary region is computed from a bulk minimal-surface area using the Ryu–Takayanagi relation.
- The broader interpretation: relations between entanglement and geometry may help explain how spacetime emerges in holography.
The first is a quantum-information definition. The second is a framework-dependent theoretical proposal with concrete checks, including the AdS3/CFT2 example. The third is a larger research direction, not a settled assertion that all space and time are universally generated by entanglement.
So, if someone says “entanglement creates spacetime,” treat that as a compressed interpretation, not as the formula’s literal conclusion. A more careful statement is that in holographic theories, boundary entanglement encodes information about bulk geometry and offers a way to study the possible emergence of spacetime.

A helpful way to compare the claims is to ask what theory is being discussed, what geometric object is involved, and how strong the conclusion is. A specific AdS3/CFT2 check is narrower than the broader holographic proposal; a geodesic in that example is the lower-dimensional counterpart of a minimal surface in higher dimensions. And “entanglement probes or encodes geometry” is more precise than “entanglement creates every spacetime.”

The proposal’s usefulness does not remove the question of why the prescription works. Later treatments discuss the challenge of deriving it from first principles of AdS/CFT, along with extensions and related developments. Rangamani and Takayanagi’s 2016 review, “Holographic Entanglement Entropy,” surveys work on the subject and describes its potential to teach physicists about the emergence of spacetime in holography.
The review and the 2009 “Holographic Entanglement Entropy: An Overview,” by Tatsuma Nishioka, Shinsei Ryu, and Tadashi Takayanagi, discuss a wider landscape than the initial example, including connections with horizons and black-hole entropy, as well as covariant formulations. These developments broaden the settings in which holographic entanglement is studied. They do not turn the original prescription into a universal rule for all quantum systems; its application remains tied to holographic theories and the conditions of a given formulation.
The review authors describe the subject as having “potential to teach us about the emergence of spacetime in holography.” The careful word is potential: the connection is a powerful tool and an active conceptual program, while deriving and extending the prescription remains part of the subject’s challenge. Connections to horizons and black-hole entropy are important developments within that broader holographic setting, not evidence that the formula applies without qualification to any gravitational system.
For readers, the practical boundary is straightforward: the area formula is powerful when the theory has the required holographic structure, but it is not a general recipe for calculating the geometry of everyday space from measurements of arbitrary entangled particles. The proposal connects two descriptions inside a specific theoretical framework. Claims beyond that scope need their own support.

How can entanglement entropy reveal geometry?
In the holographic prescription, the entropy of a boundary region is computed from the area of a bulk minimal surface anchored to that region, divided by four times the bulk Newton constant. The boundary information therefore constrains a geometric feature of the bulk.
Is the Ryu–Takayanagi formula universal?
No. It is a theoretical prescription for appropriate holographic settings, especially the AdS/CFT framework, not a formula established for arbitrary quantum systems or every spacetime.
What did the AdS3/CFT2 example show?
In the example discussed by Ryu and Takayanagi, the bulk minimal surface is a geodesic, and their prescription reproduces the known entanglement entropy result for the two-dimensional conformal field theory. This is a concrete check in that setting, not proof of a universal rule.
What is still an open challenge?
A major challenge discussed in later reviews is deriving the prescription from first principles of AdS/CFT and understanding its extensions. Work also explores connections with horizons, black-hole entropy, and covariant formulations.
The Bottom Line
In appropriate AdS/CFT settings, a boundary region’s entanglement entropy is related by the Ryu–Takayanagi proposal to the area of a minimal surface in the higher-dimensional bulk. This makes entanglement a tool for probing holographic geometry and studying spacetime emergence—not a universal claim that ordinary entangled objects generate all spacetime.
