Researchers reported a laboratory demonstration of an enzyme-powered hydrogel pump that breaks down nerve-agent compounds while using the reaction to move fluid. The proposed flow could carry an antidote through the material, but the system is an experimental pump—not an autonomous nanobot, a proven treatment, or a product available for use.
How does the enzyme-powered pump work?
The system uses organophosphorus acid anhydrase (OPAA), an engineered enzyme that hydrolyzes organophosphate compounds, including nerve agents such as sarin. The enzyme is immobilized on a support within a hydrogel. As OPAA catalyzes the chemical breakdown, reaction-associated mechanical force moves surrounding fluid through the material.
That movement is the source of the “self-powering” description: the hazardous compound being broken down is also associated with the pumping effect. The intended result is a two-part action—degrading the agent and moving a separate substance through the gel. The pump does not itself constitute an antidote.

The fluid flow was proposed as a way to transport an antidote such as atropine or pralidoxime locally through the gel. Ayusman Sen of Penn State summarized the concept as “a one-two punch – it’s destroying the nerve agent, using it as a fuel and pumping out antidote,” as quoted by Emma Stoye in Chemistry World. This describes the proposed mechanism, not demonstrated clinical protection.

What did the reported tests show?
In its 2018 account, Chemistry World said the team tested the OPAA pumps in its laboratory with diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP), a sarin mimic. It also reported that the system was sent to the U.S. Army’s chemical and biological warfare laboratory at Edgewood, Maryland, where it was shown to work with real Soman. The work was presented at the 256th American Chemical Society meeting in Boston.
These are laboratory demonstrations. The report does not establish testing in people, performance in a field setting, effectiveness against inhaled exposure, or a commercially available formulation. An ointment was discussed as a possible future delivery form, with real-world administration still a next step. A separate report said effectiveness against inhaled nerve agents was unclear; it should not be treated as a resolved question.

Is it a “nanobot” or an available antidote?
“Nanobot” appeared in the 2018 report’s headline, but it can give the wrong impression of a tiny, autonomous robot. The described device is better understood as an experimental enzyme immobilized within a hydrogel, where chemical activity drives fluid movement. The proposed antidote delivery is a function under development, not evidence that the gel is a ready-to-use medical countermeasure.

How does this pump fit into other OPAA research?
Other studies support the broader idea of using OPAA to break down organophosphates, but their results concern different enzyme variants, carriers, or decontamination formulations—not the self-pumping hydrogel. Their numbers cannot be used as performance statistics for this pump.
| Research | What was reported | How it relates to the pump |
|---|---|---|
| OPAA enzyme variants (2018) | Several-fold enhanced catalytic efficiency against sarin, Soman, and GP was reported for mutants; the Y212F/V342L variant also showed enhanced sarin stereospecificity. Study record | Enzyme-engineering context; not a measurement of hydrogel pumping. |
| OPAA in NU-1003 metal-organic framework (2016) | For 300 nm carrier particles, the study reported complete conversion of the sarin mimic DFP after two minutes and complete Soman degradation after 30 minutes under its test conditions. The formulation’s initial Soman hydrolysis rate was reported as more than three times that of free OPAA. ACS Nano study | A separate immobilization approach, not the self-pumping hydrogel. |
| Enzyme-based surface decontamination formulations (2021) | The study reported 97.6% decontamination of Soman-contaminated surfaces and 99.4% of VX-contaminated surfaces under its specified surface-assay conditions. Study record | Surface-assay results for a separate formulation, not pump efficacy. |
A review of catalytic bioscavengers identifies safety, stability, delivery, and production as issues that still require research for clinical application. Strong enzyme chemistry alone does not establish a safe, stable, deliverable medical countermeasure.

What remains to be established?
- Detailed pump performance: The news report describes demonstrations but does not provide a named published statistic specific to the self-powered hydrogel pump.
- Reproducibility and practical operation: Detailed quantitative performance, reproducibility, safety, stability, and later development are not established in the available reporting.
- Delivery and exposure route: The proposed ointment and local antidote transport need real-world development; protection against inhaled exposure is not established.
- Clinical readiness: Human testing, operational deployment, and effectiveness in people are not documented.
The practical question is not only whether OPAA can degrade a compound in a laboratory. Any future countermeasure would also need evidence for the relevant agent and exposure route, reliable delivery, safety, stability, and production at a usable scale.
