An IP address gets network traffic to a host; a transport port helps the host deliver it to the right service. The server’s operating system matches the traffic’s protocol and destination endpoint to a listening socket, which connects the incoming data to an application.
How does a server know which application should handle a request?
A port is a 16-bit number used by a transport protocol to help identify a service endpoint. It is not a physical opening or a separate computer. A port number is meaningful in context: the operating system considers the transport protocol and local address and port, then directs matching traffic to a socket that an application has opened.
- The client targets a host. It obtains or already knows the server’s IP address, which identifies the network destination.
- The client selects a transport protocol and destination port. The protocol might be TCP or UDP; the destination port indicates the service endpoint the client intends to reach.
- The server checks its local endpoint. The network stack matches the incoming protocol, destination address, and port to a socket opened by a service.
- The application receives the data. With TCP, a service typically listens for connection requests and handles accepted connections. With UDP, the operating system delivers datagrams to a matching socket without TCP’s connection setup.
The familiar analogy is a building and its internal extensions: the IP address gets traffic to the building, while the port helps route it to a service inside. The analogy is limited, because the port belongs to a transport endpoint, not to a physical socket or machine.

How do ports distinguish one conversation from another?
The server’s destination port helps select a listening service, but it does not by itself identify every conversation. A transport session is distinguished by the protocol and both endpoints: the source and destination IP addresses and port numbers. RFC 6335 describes ports as demultiplexing identifiers and explains how these endpoint details identify a session for a transport protocol (IETF RFC 6335).

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
That is why many clients can connect to the same server service port at once. Each client conversation has its own source endpoint, so the server can distinguish it from other sessions even though they share the same destination service.
What does HTTP port 80 mean?
Port 80 is the familiar registered default for HTTP. For example, an ordinary web request using TCP may target a server’s TCP port 80. The port tells the client which endpoint to address under that convention; it does not guarantee that every HTTP service uses port 80, or that a service found there is actually HTTP. IANA’s registry lists HTTP assignments by transport protocol, including port 80 for TCP and UDP (IANA Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry).

Why do TCP and UDP have separate port contexts?
TCP and UDP are different transport protocols, and their port assignments are interpreted separately. A TCP listener on a particular port is not the same endpoint as a UDP socket using that number. TCP commonly establishes a connection before application data flows; UDP sends datagrams without TCP’s connection setup. Applications and network configuration determine which protocol and endpoint are in use.
What are the port number ranges?
IANA divides port numbers into registry categories. These categories describe registration ranges; they are not universal rules for how every operating system chooses local client ports.

| Category | Range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| System | 0–1023 | System ports in the IANA registry. |
| User | 1024–49151 | User ports in the IANA registry. |
| Dynamic/Private | 49152–65535 | Dynamic or private ports in the IANA registry. |
These ranges are registry classifications, not a security rating or a guarantee about what a particular computer will use. The current categories and assignments are listed in IANA’s registry.
Does a port number prove which service is running or whether it is safe?
No. A registered or familiar port is a convention, not proof of application identity, configuration, or safety. Administrators can configure services on different ports, and traffic on a registered port may not correspond to its assigned service. IANA explicitly warns that assigning a port does not endorse an application and that traffic to or from a registered port is not necessarily good traffic or the assigned service (IANA registry warning).

Why might the public port not match the server’s local port?
On a straightforward server, a client’s destination endpoint may correspond directly to a local listening socket. In deployed networks, network address translation, port forwarding, reverse proxies, containers, or firewalls can alter or relay that mapping. A public address-and-port pair therefore may lead to a different internal endpoint. RFC 6335 also discusses constraints on port use with multiple instances and NAT (RFC 6335).
