On many Lenovo Legion laptops, press the keyboard brightness-down shortcut repeatedly until the backlight turns off. The exact key depends on the model: documented examples include Fn plus the brightness-down key and Fn+Down. Fn+Space often cycles lighting effects rather than switching the lights off. Check the user guide for your exact Legion model before relying on a shortcut.
Turn off the keyboard backlight
- Find your exact model. Check the model name and generation, then open its Lenovo support documentation. Configurations can have white-only backlighting, a multicolor keyboard, or additional light zones.
- Press the brightness-down shortcut repeatedly. Use the dim or keyboard-backlight key identified in your model’s guide. On documented multicolor models, repeated brightness-down presses cycle the keyboard lighting to off. The key combination varies by generation.
- Check whether the lights are off. If Fn+Space changes colors or patterns, that is likely the effect-cycle control on your model, not the off control. Try the model’s brightness-down shortcut instead.
For example, Lenovo’s Legion 9i (18-inch, 10th-generation) guide says to press the keyboard brightness-down key multiple times to turn the lights off. The Legion 7a (15-inch, 11th-generation) guide documents Fn+Up and Fn+Down for brightness, with repeated Fn+Down presses switching the backlight off.
Why the shortcut depends on your Legion model
Lenovo’s instructions differ across generations and configurations, so there is no single keyboard shortcut that applies to every Legion. The Legion Pro 5 16IRX9 guide, for instance, describes Fn+Spacebar or Esc for changing keyboard-backlight mode and explains how to check whether that specific computer has a backlit keyboard. That is a model-specific instruction, not proof that the same keys turn off the backlight on other Legions.
Lenovo’s Legion 7 (16-inch, 6th-generation) guide covers keyboard lighting as well as ventilation-slot and side LEDs. The Legion 7i (16-inch, 9th-generation) guide distinguishes white-only and multicolor keyboard configurations. Check the guide for your exact model and configuration rather than assuming every unit has the same lighting hardware or controls.

Turn off logo or chassis lights separately
A keyboard brightness setting may not control every light on the laptop. Some models have separate controls for branding or connector lights. On the Legion 9i (16-inch, 9th-generation), Fn+L toggles the Legion branding light and Fn+U toggles rear connector lights. The 18-inch, 10th-generation guide also identifies Fn+L for the branding light.
Other models may group multiple lighting zones under a brightness shortcut. If a logo, vent, side, or connector light remains on after the keyboard goes dark, consult the model’s guide for a separate control; do not assume the keyboard setting disables all chassis lighting.

Use Lenovo’s lighting utility if you want to manage effects
Lenovo’s newer Legion documentation points to Legion Space for lighting effects. Some earlier model guides name Lenovo Vantage or PC Manager instead. Open the utility named in your own model’s guide; app names and interfaces from older documentation should not be treated as universal current instructions. For simply turning off a supported keyboard backlight, the hardware brightness-down shortcut may be the more direct option.

What to check if lighting controls do not work
- Confirm the keyboard has a backlight. Use the configuration check in your model’s Lenovo guide; not every configuration has the same lighting hardware.
- Use the dim control, not just the effect-cycle key. Fn+Space may change the pattern while leaving the backlight on. Find the brightness-down key or combination specified for your model.
- Check Windows Dynamic Lighting. On supported systems, go to Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting. Lenovo says that if Dynamic Lighting is enabled and given first priority, Legion’s preconfigured effects can be deactivated. This setting concerns effect control; use the model’s guide to determine the appropriate control for turning off the lights.
- Check for a model-specific lighting controller. Lenovo’s older Legion 7 (16-inch, 6th-generation) guide says Corsair iCUE controls effects on the documented configuration; quitting iCUE restores Fn+Space control of Lenovo’s preset effects. This behavior is specific to that documented setup and should not be assumed for every Legion.
