Press Alt+Tab to move between open windows in Windows. Keep holding Alt and press Tab until the window you want is selected, then release Alt to switch to it. For a visual overview of open windows and virtual desktops, press Windows key+Tab to open Task View.
What does “toggle windows” mean?
In Windows, toggling between windows means switching from one open application or window to another. The quickest built-in shortcut is Alt+Tab. It cycles through open windows; it does not close them.
How to switch between open windows with Alt+Tab
- Hold down the Alt key.
- Press Tab once to select another open window. Keep pressing Tab while holding Alt to move through the available windows.
- Release Alt when the window you want is selected. Windows activates it.

Press Windows key+Tab to open Task View, which provides a broader visual overview of open windows and virtual desktops. Choose a window there when you want to see the available choices rather than cycle through them one at a time. Switching virtual desktops is different
Virtual desktops are separate desktop workspaces, not individual open windows. Use Windows key+Ctrl+Left Arrow or Windows key+Ctrl+Right Arrow to move between virtual desktops. Use Alt+Tab when your goal is to switch among open windows instead.
