Start with the audience and the one message the video must deliver. Then turn that message into a short script, story beats, and a shot list or storyboard before generating anything. A small pilot lets the team check whether the planned shots communicate the story and fit together; revise the plan and prompts before expanding production.
What should the team decide before using an AI video tool?
Agree on the communication goal before opening a generator. A clear brief gives writers, producers, reviewers, and anyone generating assets the same reference point for decisions.
- Audience: Who needs to understand or do something after watching?
- Goal and key message: What is the one main point the video should communicate?
- Format and length: Where will it appear, and what viewing context should shape the plan?
- Tone and visual direction: What should the video feel and look like?
- Review requirements: Who must approve the script, visuals, brand use, or legal claims?
Keep this brief concise and use it to evaluate later drafts. Product documentation offers process recommendations, not a universal brief template, so adapt these fields to the project.

How do you turn the idea into a script and storyboard?
Draft a script with a clear progression
Structure the script around an opening, the core message, and a close. Adobe’s AI video guide describes a script as both a creative and technical guide to scene flow and pacing. Treat each new idea, action, or change in what the viewer needs to see as a potential visual beat.

Make each beat a planned shot
A storyboard is a working plan, not a finished illustration. Runway’s AI storyboarding guide recommends identifying narrative beats and making a rough shot list before generating storyboard panels. For each beat, record:
- Shot type, camera position, and framing
- Subject and visible action
- Environment, mood, and lighting
- Camera movement, if needed
- Dialogue, timing, and sound notes relevant to the scene
Runway’s guide to creating longer videos and films recommends a storyboard frame for each potential generation and commonly plans clips in the 5–10 second range. That is vendor workflow guidance, not a universal duration limit or a guarantee about what a model can produce. Plan clips around the story beat rather than stretching or splitting them to fit a number.
How should prompts reflect the shot plan?
For text-to-video, describe the scene and its motion
Use the shot list to specify what should be visible: subject, setting, action, environmental movement, and camera movement. Add timing when it matters to the beat. Runway’s text-to-video prompting guide recommends starting with the most important elements and refining through iteration. A prompt is a way to communicate a planned shot, not a replacement for deciding what the shot needs to do.

For image-to-video, focus on what changes
An approved reference image already establishes much of the composition and visual style. In that case, describe the movement and camera behavior you want rather than re-describing every visible detail. See Runway’s image-to-video prompting guide. If the reference does not represent the approved direction, fix that before relying on a prompt to compensate.
How should a team pilot and review generated shots?
- Select representative beats. Choose a few shots that test important parts of the plan, such as a key action, a visual transition, or a recurring character or style.
- Generate and compare with the storyboard. Check whether each result communicates its intended beat, follows the visual direction, and can connect to the shots around it.
- Record what needs to change. Note whether the issue is the brief, shot plan, reference image, prompt, or an output that does not meet the need.
- Revise before scaling. Update the relevant plan or prompt, then generate further shots once the approach is workable.
Runway’s Agent guide says results can be mistaken or variable and may require iteration. A prompt alone therefore should not be treated as a guarantee of consistent or finished footage. Keep human review in the workflow, especially for message accuracy and required brand or legal approval.
How can teams make a successful workflow reusable?
Once a sequence of steps works for a recurring type of video, document the inputs, prompts, review gates, file naming, and handoffs. This makes the process easier to repeat and inspect; it does not ensure identical creative outputs.

Runway describes Workflows as a node-based way to connect generation and utility steps, build reusable templates, and automate repetitive tasks. Its Workflows product page also describes connected pipelines and branching variations. Treat these as examples of documented workflow capabilities, not evidence of comparative performance.

Choose based on the work the team needs to do and the systems it already uses—not on a claim that a tool will automatically produce a better video. Compare the practical fit of each option:
- Planning artifacts: Does it help with the outline, script, storyboard, or scene suggestions the team actually needs?
- Workspace integration: Can the team work with approved documents and existing files?
- Repeatability and sharing: Can recurring steps, templates, and handoffs be managed?
- Editing and control: Can the team make the changes needed after a draft is generated?
- Access: Are the relevant features available under the team’s subscription and account eligibility?
Google Vids for a storyboard-to-draft path
Google’s Vids help page documents a “Help me create” storyboard path that can produce an outline with suggested scenes, generated text, media suggestions, a script, and a voiceover; users can edit the outline and customize the draft. The feature requires an eligible Google Workspace subscription or trusted tester access, and Google notes that limits can change. It is not universally available.

Runway for connected generation steps
Runway’s getting-started guide describes Tools, Apps, Agent, and Workflows as distinct ways to create, organize, or automate work. Its documentation presents Agent as assistance for planning, scripts, storyboards, generation, and timeline editing, while Workflows is aimed at connected, reusable steps. Check current feature access and subscription terms before choosing a workflow; vendor features and eligibility can change.
Adobe’s guide for scripting and storyboarding practices
Adobe’s AI video guide is an educational reference for scripting and storyboarding. Use it as process guidance rather than as a comparison of tool quality or effectiveness.
What should the team expect from the process?
Planning makes creative decisions explicit before generation: what a scene must communicate, what it should show, and who will judge whether it works. Vendor documentation can show how specific features support parts of that process, but it does not establish independent product quality, actual team results, or time savings. Keep the brief, storyboard, prompts, and review notes together so the team can trace each generated shot back to its purpose.
