Decide which way every person faces before interpreting any left-or-right clue. Directions belong to the seated person named in the clue, not to the reader looking at the diagram. Mark each person’s orientation, convert their left or right into clockwise or anticlockwise movement, place the strongest constraints first, and test the finished circle against every clue.
The conversion depends on whether a sitter faces the centre, faces outward, or has an orientation different from other people at the table. Use the table and procedure below to avoid reversing a correct arrangement.
The orientation rules
A round-table diagram gives you a fixed clockwise direction, but “left” and “right” are personal directions. Imagine sitting in the named person’s chair and looking in the direction that person faces. Only then translate the clue into movement around the circle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Person’s orientation | Their left means | Their right means | How to remember it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facing the centre | Clockwise | Anticlockwise | At the top of a circle, a person facing down has left toward the right side of the page. |
| Facing outward | Anticlockwise | Clockwise | Turning around reverses both directions. |
| Mixed facing | Use the individual person’s orientation | Use the individual person’s orientation | There is no single left/right rule for the whole table. |
Thus, “B is to A’s right” is not automatically a clockwise move. If A faces the centre, move anticlockwise from A. If A faces outward, move clockwise from A. If the clue names C’s left instead, use C’s orientation, even when A and C face different ways.

Why the direction appears to reverse
People around a circle point in different physical directions. A reader sees the outside of the diagram, while a seated person sees the table from their own position. Left and right are attached to that person’s body, so the same page direction can represent different personal directions.
For a centre-facing group, everyone looks toward the middle. Moving from one seat to the next clockwise follows the sitter’s left side; moving anticlockwise follows the sitter’s right side. An outward-facing group has each person turned around, so the mapping reverses. In a mixed arrangement, that reversal applies only to the people who face outward.
Set up the circle before solving clues
- Draw and number the seats. Use a circle with evenly spaced positions and mark a clockwise arrow. Numbering seats 1, 2, 3 and so on makes distance checks unambiguous.
- Fix one named person. In a round table, rotating the entire arrangement produces the same relative solution. Put one person in any seat, such as seat 1, to remove that harmless rotational freedom.
- Record orientation. Write an inward arrow or outward arrow beside every name. Do this before placing any left/right clue. If the problem states that everyone faces one way, mark that rule once; if it mixes directions, mark each person separately.
- Choose a direction notation. You can write
CWfor clockwise andCCWfor anticlockwise. Keep the notation consistent on the page.
This setup prevents a common mistake: drawing a visually attractive circle first and unconsciously treating the viewer’s left as the sitter’s left.
Translate each clue from the named person’s viewpoint
Read the grammar of a clue carefully. The person whose left or right is mentioned controls the direction. The person being placed does not control it.

Immediate position
“B sits immediately to A’s right” means the seat directly next to A in A’s rightward direction. If A faces the centre, place B in the adjacent anticlockwise seat. If A faces outward, use the adjacent clockwise seat.
Numbered position
“B is second to A’s right” means move two seats in A’s rightward direction: one intervening seat, then B. “Third to the left” means three seat steps in the named person’s leftward direction. Do not treat “second” as the second person encountered while counting A as position one unless the puzzle explicitly defines a different convention.
Between and opposite clues
Words such as “between,” “opposite,” and “adjacent” do not by themselves specify left or right. Apply their ordinary geometric meaning, then use the orientation only when a clue names a side. With an even number of seats, “opposite” is the seat half a circle away. With an odd number, there is no exact opposite seat, so a puzzle using that term must provide a special definition or be inconsistent.

- Start with the most restrictive information. Place fixed positions, opposite pairs, exact adjacency, or clues with a large numbered distance before broad statements such as “D sits next to E.”
- Translate before placing. For every left/right clue, write the equivalent movement beside it. For example, if A faces inward, record “A’s right = CCW,” then apply the stated number of steps.
- Propagate consequences. Once a person occupies a seat, update every clue involving that person. A single exact placement may determine several other seats.
- Keep alternatives visible. If a clue permits two seats, mark both temporarily rather than guessing. Eliminate an option only when another condition rules it out.
- Respect occupied seats. A numbered move can wrap around the circle. From the last seat, continue at seat 1; never stop at the edge of a drawn page.
- Check the complete arrangement. Read every original clue in order, using the orientation of the person named in that clue. One failed statement means the placement, distance count, or direction translation needs correction.
Worked example: everyone faces the centre
Suppose six people sit around a table and all face inward. Fix A in seat 1. The clue says, “B is second to A’s right.” For an inward-facing person, right is anticlockwise. Move two seats anticlockwise from seat 1: seat 6 is the first step and seat 5 is the second, so B goes in seat 5.

Now consider “C is immediately to B’s left.” B also faces inward, so B’s left is clockwise. From seat 5, move one seat clockwise to seat 6 and place C there. Notice that C’s own facing direction is irrelevant to this particular clue; the clue refers to B’s left.
If a later clue says “D is immediately to C’s right,” use C’s orientation, not B’s. If C faces inward, C’s right is anticlockwise, so D would go one seat anticlockwise from C. Each clue is a new viewpoint calculation.
Worked example: everyone faces outward
With the same six-seat circle, suppose all people face outward and A remains in seat 1. The statement “B is second to A’s right” now uses the reversed rule: A’s right is clockwise. Moving two seats clockwise places B in seat 3 rather than seat 5.

This is why copying an inward-facing solution and merely changing the labels fails. Turning every person around changes the interpretation of every left/right clue, even though the circle and seat numbers stay in the same locations.

Worked example: mixed-facing arrangements
Assume A faces inward, B faces outward, and C faces inward. The clues are:
- “B is immediately to A’s left.”
- “C is second to B’s right.”
For the first clue, use A’s orientation. A faces inward, so A’s left is clockwise; place B in the adjacent clockwise seat from A. For the second clue, use B’s orientation. B faces outward, so B’s right is clockwise; move two seats clockwise from B to place C.
Do not use C’s orientation while interpreting the second clue simply because C is the person being placed. C’s orientation matters when another clue refers to C’s left or right. In a mixed puzzle, annotate every clue with the orientation of its reference person before solving.

- Immediately to the right or left: one step to the adjacent seat.
- Second to the right or left: two steps, leaving one person between the reference person and the target.
- Third to the right or left: three steps, leaving two intervening seats.
Count around the full circle, including the wrap from the last numbered seat back to seat 1. If the clue instead says “there are two people between A and B,” that describes a gap and normally places B three seat steps away. Keep the puzzle’s exact wording beside your diagram rather than silently converting one form into another.
Handling clues that seem contradictory
Recheck the reference person
Ask, “Whose left or right is named?” In “E is to F’s left,” F supplies the direction. Reversing E and F is a frequent cause of an apparently impossible arrangement.
Recheck orientation before distance
First determine whether the reference person faces inward or outward. Then convert left/right to clockwise/anticlockwise. Only after that should you count one, two, or three seats.
Check whether a clue is immediate
“Next to,” “adjacent,” and “immediately” require one seat step. A numbered position requires the stated number of steps. Treating “second” as adjacent can make several valid clues appear inconsistent.
Test rotational and mirror assumptions
Rotating the entire circle never changes relative relationships, so fixing a different person in seat 1 should produce the same pattern shifted around the table. Mirroring the diagram is different: a mirror swap changes clockwise to anticlockwise and is not automatically a valid solution.
Verification checklist before you submit an answer
- Every seat contains exactly one person, and every person appears once.
- The orientation of each person is recorded and matches the problem statement.
- Each left/right clue was translated using the orientation of its reference person.
- Immediate, second, third, and gap-based distances were counted with the correct number of seat steps.
- Opposite and between relationships were checked geometrically.
- All clues hold simultaneously after wraparound is considered.
- Any alternative arrangement was eliminated by an explicit clue rather than by visual preference.
A compact notation for timed tests
For speed, write a small direction key at the top of the page: IN: L=CW, R=CCW and OUT: L=CCW, R=CW. Beside a mixed-facing name, add I or O. Rewrite a clue such as “H is third to G’s left” as G(I), L, 3 = CW 3 before moving H. This two-stage notation separates interpretation from placement and makes it easier to spot a reversal.
What to do when the puzzle gives no facing direction
Do not assume a convention silently. Many standard circular-arrangement questions state that people face the centre or face outside; if the statement omits that information, the answer may be under-specified. Look for a diagram, an instruction elsewhere in the question, or a convention stated by the test. If none exists, state the assumption in your solution and note that reversing the assumed orientation reverses every left/right placement.
