Start by identifying which Windows screen is asking for attention: a TPM warning, a BitLocker recovery prompt, or an activation error. They need different fixes. For a TPM warning, check whether the replacement motherboard’s firmware TPM is enabled before considering a TPM reset. If BitLocker is asking for a recovery key, retrieve the key; if Windows is not activated, use Activation settings.

Identify the message before changing settings

Record the full message or error code, then note where it appears. This determines the least disruptive next step.

  • Windows Security > Device security > Security processor details or Security processor troubleshooting: a TPM detection, configuration, firmware, or state issue.
  • A BitLocker recovery screen during startup: Windows needs the recovery key to unlock an encrypted drive.
  • Settings > System > Activation: a Windows licensing issue, which is separate from TPM health.

A motherboard or firmware change can trigger BitLocker recovery because the system’s security measurements changed. That does not by itself mean the drive is damaged or that the TPM needs to be cleared.

Check whether the new motherboard’s TPM is enabled

Windows 11 requires a supported TPM 2.0. A compatible TPM can be present but disabled in the replacement board’s UEFI firmware, so a message that Windows cannot find one does not necessarily mean the board lacks the feature. Microsoft explains how to check TPM availability and enable it in its TPM 2.0 guidance.

NewHail TPM2.0 Module LPC 14Pin Module with Infineon SLB9665 for ASUS Motherboard Compatible with TPM-M R2.0
  • Compatible with TPM-M R2.0
  • Chipset: Infineon SLB9665
  • PIN DEFINE:14Pin
  • Interface:LPC
  • Please check the Pinout of mainboard at the official website and make sure it compatible with the pinout of TPM module before purchasing, thank you.
  1. Check in Windows. Open Windows Security > Device security > Security processor details. Look for the specification version. Alternatively, press Windows key + R, enter tpm.msc, and review the TPM status and specification version.
  2. Open the UEFI settings. Restart the computer and use the key or method specified by the motherboard maker to enter firmware setup. Check its security, advanced, or trusted-computing menus.
  3. Look for the board’s TPM setting. Depending on the board and firmware, it may be called Security Device, Security Device Support, TPM State, AMD fTPM switch, AMD PSP fTPM, Intel PTT, or Intel Platform Trust Technology.
  4. Enable the appropriate setting, save, and restart. Check Windows Security or tpm.msc again after Windows starts.

Menu names and locations depend on the exact motherboard model. Use that model’s manufacturer documentation rather than guessing at firmware settings. If the TPM remains undetected, note the board model and firmware version before contacting the manufacturer.

Match the fix to the TPM error

Microsoft’s Windows Security TPM troubleshooting guidance distinguishes several messages with different recommended actions.

Windows Security message or symptom First action Important consideration
“TPM is disabled and requires attention.” Check that TPM or security-device support is enabled in UEFI. The setting’s name and location vary by motherboard model.
“A firmware update is needed” or “Your TPM isn’t compatible with your firmware.” Check the manufacturer’s official support guidance for the exact board model and firmware. Do not install firmware intended for a similar-looking but different model.
“TPM measured boot log is missing” or “There is a problem with your TPM. Try restarting your device.” Restart the device first. Microsoft lists restart as the initial step for these messages.
“TPM storage is not available” or “Device health attestation isn’t available.” Microsoft’s guidance points to Clear TPM for these errors. Clearing can remove TPM-held credentials. Prepare first, especially on a managed device.

After changing a UEFI setting or installing an official firmware update, restart and check the TPM status again. If the same error remains, give the motherboard maker the exact board model, firmware version, full Windows message, and steps already taken. The correct firmware or menu path cannot be determined without the board model.

Clear the TPM only when the error calls for it

Clearing the TPM resets the security processor; it is not a universal fix for every post-replacement TPM warning. Microsoft’s Clear TPM guidance warns that clearing can affect data or credentials protected by the TPM.

  • Back up important data and make sure you can access the recovery information you may need, including the BitLocker recovery key.
  • Expect a Windows Hello PIN or biometric sign-in configured through the TPM to stop working until it is set up again.
  • If the computer belongs to a workplace or school, contact IT before clearing the TPM. The organization may manage its security settings or recovery information.

Use Clear TPM only when the specific error and Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance support it, and only after preparing for those consequences.

If BitLocker asks for a recovery key, unlock the drive

Use the recovery screen’s key ID to identify the matching saved key if more than one is available. A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit number. For a personal device, check the Microsoft account where the key was saved; for a work or school device, contact the organization’s administrator. Microsoft explains where to find a recovery key and notes that its support staff cannot retrieve or recreate a lost one. If the encrypted data matters, do not format the drive or reinstall Windows simply to get past the prompt.

If Windows is not activated, troubleshoot the license

Activation is independent of TPM status. Microsoft says Windows activation is tied to the device’s hardware, and replacing a motherboard can prevent Windows from finding a matching license. If the TPM is healthy but Windows reports that it is not activated, go to Settings > System > Activation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to an eligible digital license, if applicable.
  2. Select Troubleshoot, then choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
  3. Select the current device and follow the prompts. The installed Windows edition must match the license, such as Home or Pro.

Microsoft describes this process in its hardware-change reactivation guidance. A valid product key is another route through Activation settings. OEM-installed licenses and independently replaced motherboards can have different outcomes; consult the device maker and applicable license terms if the troubleshooter does not reactivate Windows. Microsoft’s separate activation-error guidance covers other licensing messages.
