To add to an Instagram Story, open the Instagram mobile app, tap Your story or + and choose Story, select or record media, add text or stickers, then tap Your story or Close Friends. You can also add another frame, reshare an eligible post, or save a Story to Highlights.
“Add to an Instagram Story” can mean several different actions: creating a new Story, adding another photo or video as a separate frame, placing text or interactive stickers on a frame, resharing someone else’s content, or keeping a published Story on your profile through Highlights. The steps below separate each meaning.
The instructions apply primarily to the Instagram app on iPhone and Android. Instagram can change button locations and available tools by device, app version, account, country, and licensing or feature rollout, so a label may appear slightly differently on your screen.
Key takeaways
- A new Instagram Story starts from Your story, the + button followed by Story, or a right swipe from the feed.
- A photo or video uploaded after an existing Story is published becomes a new Story frame; Instagram does not normally insert it into the already-published frame.
- Text, music, links, mentions, polls, questions, GIFs, locations, hashtags, and other interactive elements are available from the Stickers tool, but availability varies by account and region.
- The Add to story option for another person’s post may be unavailable when the account is private, resharing is disabled, the post is restricted, or the feature is unavailable.
- A published Story can be added to a Highlight while active or from the Story archive, allowing the Story to remain visible on the profile until removed.
How do you add a photo or video to a new Instagram Story?
To add a photo or video to a new Instagram Story, open Instagram on your phone, open the Story composer, choose or record media, edit the frame, and publish it.

- Open the Instagram mobile app and return to the main feed.
- Use any of these entry points:
- Tap Your story or your profile picture with the plus sign.
- Tap +, then select Story.
- Swipe right from the feed to open the Story camera.
- Choose Camera to take a photo or record a video, or tap a camera-roll thumbnail to upload existing media.
- Edit the Story with text, drawing tools, filters, or stickers.
- Tap Your story to share it with your normal Story audience. Choose Close Friends instead if the Story should be limited to your Close Friends list.
Instagram’s interface may place the camera-roll thumbnail, audience controls, or create button in different locations depending on the app version and device. The standard result is the same: the selected photo or video becomes one Story frame.
How do you add another photo or video after posting?
To add another photo or video after posting an Instagram Story, start the Story process again and select the next item. Instagram publishes the new upload as an additional frame in the Story sequence, rather than editing the original published frame.
For a single new frame, tap Your story again, open the camera-roll picker, select the next photo or video, edit it, and share it. If your Story tray shows a camera-roll Select multiple control, you can select several items at once, review or arrange them, edit the available frames, and publish them together. The exact multi-select control is not displayed identically for every account or app version.

Several Story frames and several images on one canvas are different results:
| What you want | Best method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Several photos or videos viewed one after another | Select multiple items or post each item separately | Separate Story frames |
| Several photos on one Story screen | Use a collage or Layout tool, if available | One composed Story frame |
| Photos layered over a background | Use photo stickers or the available media-sticker option | One frame with movable image layers |
| A finished collage with precise design control | Create the collage in another editor and upload it as one image | One imported Story frame |
If a Story frame is already published, the practical alternatives are to post a second frame, delete and recreate the original frame, or use a collage or photo-sticker composition before publishing. Instagram generally does not let you reopen a published frame and insert another photo into that same frame.
How do you add text to an Instagram Story?
To add text, take or upload Story media, tap Aa, type the message, and adjust its appearance and position before publishing.
- Open the Story editor and take or select a photo or video.
- Tap Aa.
- Type your message.
- Choose a font style, color, alignment, size, or animation option shown by the editor.
- Drag the text box to reposition it. Use separate text boxes when different words need different colors, sizes, styles, or animations.
Keep important text away from the extreme top and bottom of the frame. Profile information, reply controls, and other Story interface elements can cover text placed too close to those edges.

How do you add stickers, music, a link, or a mention?
To add most Story elements, create or upload the frame, tap Stickers, and choose the relevant sticker from the tray. Instagram’s official sticker list includes tools such as Add Yours, Captions, Countdown, Current time or weather, Cutouts, Donation, GIF, Hashtag, Link, Location, Mention, Music, Poll, emoji slider, Questions, Quiz, and Selfie.
Instagram does not make every sticker available to every account. Country restrictions, licensing, account type, app version, and staged feature rollouts can affect what appears. Instagram specifically notes that some stickers may be unavailable in particular countries, including some European or Japanese availability restrictions.
How do you add a link?
To add a link to an Instagram Story, tap Stickers, choose Link, enter or paste the web address, confirm the sticker, and move or resize it before sharing. Instagram describes the Link sticker as a clickable element that sends viewers to the linked website.
- Create or upload the Story frame.
- Tap Stickers and select Link.
- Paste or type the URL.
- Confirm the link sticker.
- Position and resize the sticker, then publish the Story.
Link-sticker access can depend on the account, region, eligibility, or rollout. Do not assume that a particular follower count or account category is universally required. A URL typed into an ordinary text box may not behave like the clickable Link sticker.
How do you add music?
To add music, open the Story editor, tap Stickers, choose Music, search for a song, select the desired section, choose the available display style, and publish.
- Take or upload the Story media.
- Tap Stickers, then Music.
- Search for a song and select it.
- Choose the part of the song to play.
- Select the available presentation, such as lyrics, album artwork, or a compact music label.
- Preview the frame and share it.
Music availability depends on country, account type, licensing, and whether the content is being used organically or in advertising. A song available on one account may not be available on another account. Professional accounts can also face commercial music restrictions, so original audio or properly licensed audio may be the appropriate alternative.
How do you add a mention?
To mention another account, tap Stickers followed by Mention, or type an @username in a text box and select the correct account from the suggestions.

Open the Stickers tray and select the relevant tool, then follow the on-screen prompts. Polls, emoji sliders, questions, quizzes, Add Yours prompts, GIFs, locations, hashtags, captions, countdowns, and time or weather elements can make a Story interactive or add context.
Sticker gestures are generally consistent: tap a sticker to change its style, drag it to move it, pinch with two fingers to resize or rotate it, and drag it toward the trash area to remove it. Preview the entire frame before sharing so a sticker does not cover a face, name, subtitle, product detail, or call to action.

- Start a new Story and select the background media.
- Tap Stickers → Cutouts.
- Select a photo or video from your device.
- Let Instagram identify the subject, or choose Select manually if the automatic selection needs correction.
- Add the cutout, then move, resize, or rotate it like another sticker.
Instagram says that created cutout stickers can be saved for reuse. Cutouts made from another person’s post may require a public source account and permission to reuse the content. According to Instagram’s Cutouts help information, deleting the source post can also affect content using that sticker.

Why is “Add to story” missing for a post?
The Add to story option may be missing because the source account is private, the original poster disabled resharing, the post is restricted or unavailable, the feature is not available to your account or region, or the app needs updating.
Try these recovery steps:
- Update Instagram from your device’s app store.
- Force-close Instagram and reopen it.
- Confirm that the source post is still available.
- Check whether the source account is public and whether resharing is permitted.
- Ask the original creator to send the media or enable an approved sharing option.
Trying from a desktop browser can also produce a different set of options because the full Story creation experience is primarily mobile-focused. Desktop features should not be assumed to match the iPhone and Android app.

When another user mentions your account in a Story, Instagram may provide an Add to your story option through the notification or direct-message preview.
- Open the Instagram notification or message showing the mention.
- Choose the available Add to your story option.
- Edit the reshared frame if Instagram provides the editor.
- Publish it to Your story or Close Friends.
The reshare option depends on the original Story still being available and on the original account’s privacy and sharing settings. The option may disappear after the Story expires or if the original account restricts sharing.
How do you add an Instagram Story to Highlights?
To add an Instagram Story to Highlights, select the Story while it is active or choose it from the Story archive, then add it to an existing or new Highlight on your profile. Instagram’s Highlight instructions describe Highlights as profile collections that can contain Stories after the original Story disappears.
How do you add a Story to an existing Highlight?
- Go to your Instagram profile.
- Open the Highlight you want to change.
- Tap More, then Edit.
- Select Stories.
- Choose the Story or Stories to add.
- Tap Next, then Done.
How do you create a new Highlight?
- Open your profile and tap New or Story highlight.
- Select Stories from the active Story list or archive.
- Tap Next.
- Enter a Highlight name and choose a cover if prompted.
- Save the Highlight.
Story archive access must be available for selecting an older Story. Highlight visibility follows the original Story’s audience and privacy settings, and a Highlight remains on the profile until it is removed.
How do you share an Instagram Story to Facebook?
To share an Instagram Story to Facebook, enable Instagram-to-Facebook Story sharing through Instagram’s sharing settings or Accounts Center, then publish the Instagram Story normally. The setting is separate from adding media or stickers to an Instagram Story.

Instagram’s cross-posting help information says Instagram-to-Facebook Story sharing is available on iPhone, iPad, and Android, not computers. Meta can move the setting as Accounts Center changes, so the exact menu path may differ.
What should you do when an Instagram Story feature is missing?
A missing Story feature usually reflects account, region, licensing, rollout, privacy, or app-version differences rather than a mistake in the basic Story process.
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No Story button | You are on the wrong screen, the app is outdated, or Instagram has a temporary issue. | Return to the feed, try + → Story or swipe right, update Instagram, and restart the app. |
| No Add to story option | The source account is private, resharing is disabled, the post is restricted, or the feature is unavailable. | Confirm the post is available, request permission, or ask the creator to send the media through an approved method. |
| No Link sticker | The account, region, rollout, or app version may not have access, or you may be in an ad workflow. | Update Instagram, search the full sticker tray, try a normal organic Story, and check account or regional availability. |
| Music or a particular song is unavailable | Regional licensing, account restrictions, or commercial-use limitations. | Try another track, original audio, or properly licensed audio. |
| The uploaded image is cropped | The image does not fit the Story canvas or the editor is zoomed in. | Reposition or zoom out, use a vertical Story-oriented image, or place the complete image as a smaller photo sticker over a background. |
| A sticker is missing | The sticker is unavailable in your country or account, or the app is outdated. | Update Instagram, search the complete sticker tray, and check whether the feature is available for the account. |
| You want to add to a Story that was already posted | Published frames are not freely editable. | Post another frame, delete and recreate the frame, or use a collage or photo sticker before publishing. |
Instagram separates ordinary organic Story tools from advertising and boosting rules. Meta’s Story ad and boosting guidance warns that some creative tools and link stickers can affect whether a Story can be boosted. Advertising restrictions should not automatically be treated as restrictions on an ordinary personal Story.
Which Instagram format should you use?
The best format depends on whether the content should be temporary, persistent, interactive, or discovery-focused.
| Format | Best for | What happens to the content |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Temporary updates, sequential media, informal posts, and interactive stickers | Appears as Story frames for the available Story period |
| Feed post | Content intended to remain visible on the profile | Remains in the profile feed unless archived or deleted |
| Reel | Video intended for playback and broader discovery | Appears in the Reels experience and profile areas allowed by Instagram |
| Highlight | Organizing selected Stories into a persistent profile collection | Remains visible on the profile until removed, subject to audience settings |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you add a photo to an Instagram Story after posting?
Yes. Start another Instagram Story and select the additional photo or video. Instagram publishes the new upload as a separate Story frame rather than inserting it into the already-published frame.
Why can’t I add someone else’s Instagram post to my Story?
The Add to story option may be unavailable when the source account is private, the original poster disabled resharing, the post is restricted or unavailable, or the feature is not available to your account or region. Updating Instagram and confirming the post is still available are useful first steps.
Do you need a certain number of followers to add a link to an Instagram Story?
Link-sticker access can depend on account, region, eligibility, and rollout. A universal follower-count requirement should not be assumed because Instagram’s access rules can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan you add an old Instagram Story to a Highlight?
Yes, if the Story is available in the Story archive. Open an existing Highlight and choose More → Edit → Stories, or create a new Highlight from your profile and select the archived Story.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use Your story or + → Story to add the first photo or video, use Aa and Stickers for additions to that frame, start another Story for a later frame, use the share icon to reshare eligible posts, and use Highlights to keep selected Stories on your profile.
