Subglacial lakes are bodies of water trapped beneath a glacier or ice sheet, usually at the boundary between ice and bedrock. That setting—not whether the water is fresh or salty—is the defining difference from an ordinary lake. Thick ice puts the water under immense pressure, blocks all light, insulates it from the atmosphere and can keep it liquid below the normal freezing point.

An ocean is different in an equally fundamental way: it is a marine body connected to the sea, with large-scale exchange of water, salt, heat and organisms. A subglacial lake is a discrete basin beneath grounded ice, although some lakes connect to pressurized channels and can eventually discharge toward the ocean. The sections below separate the physical, chemical and hydrological differences without treating any category as uniform.

What makes a lake “subglacial”?

The Australian Antarctic Data Centre’s definitions provide the simplest test. “Subglacial” means beneath a glacier, while a lake is an enclosed body of water from which the sea is excluded. A subglacial lake is therefore water enclosed below a glacier or ice sheet, commonly where the ice rests on bedrock and the bed forms a depression.

A surface lake can be covered by winter ice, perennial ice or snow and still remain an ordinary lake because its water is exposed to the atmosphere above that cover. In a subglacial lake, the overlying ice is part of the permanent environment: it may be hundreds or thousands of metres thick, carries the weight of the ice sheet, and separates the water from sunlight and direct atmospheric exchange.

The category also does not depend on location alone. Most mapped examples are in Antarctica, but scientists have identified subglacial water beneath Greenland, Devon Ice Cap, Icelandic ice caps and valley glaciers. The same physical principle applies in each setting, although temperature, bedrock, water chemistry and connectivity can differ.

Subglacial lakes, surface lakes and oceans compared

Characteristic Ordinary surface lake Subglacial lake Ocean
Setting Open to the atmosphere; seasonal or permanent surface ice may form Sealed beneath a glacier or ice sheet, usually at the ice-bed interface Marine water connected with the sea
Pressure Close to atmospheric pressure at the surface High overburden pressure from the ice above Pressure rises with depth through the water column
Temperature Varies with climate, season, depth and circulation Near the pressure-adjusted freezing point; commonly below 0°C Freezing conditions depend on salinity and pressure; temperature varies by depth and region
Light Often receives sunlight, even when some surface ice is present Permanently dark beneath thick ice Sunlight penetrates only the upper ocean
Water exchange May exchange with air, precipitation, rivers, groundwater and outlets Can be isolated or linked to pressurized subglacial channels Connected to broad atmospheric, coastal and deep-ocean circulation
Salinity Often fresh, but saline lakes also exist Variable; salinity is not a defining property Seawater is generally saline
Wider physical effect Influences local ecosystems and drainage Can change friction beneath ice, ice-stream speed and freshwater delivery Drives major global heat, salt and water circulation

These are category-level contrasts, not rules for every individual water body. A saline surface lake, a briny subglacial basin and a coastal ocean inlet can overlap chemically while remaining different environments because their settings and connections differ.

How can water stay liquid beneath Antarctic ice?

Three processes work together. First, the ice sheet insulates its bed from the much colder surface. Second, geothermal heat rises from Earth’s interior; friction from moving ice can add heat at the bed. Third, the weight of the overlying ice changes the pressure at which water freezes. In a topographic depression, meltwater produced at the bed can accumulate faster than it drains.

At ordinary surface pressure, pure water freezes at 0°C. Under a thick ice load, the melting point is depressed slightly, so water can remain liquid at temperatures below 0°C. The exact temperature depends on pressure, impurities, geothermal input, friction and local circulation. It is misleading to assign one temperature to every subglacial lake.

The bed must also provide a basin or a hydraulic low point. Meltwater can pond where bedrock geometry and the ice surface create a closed or semi-closed pressure landscape. If the pressure gradient later changes, the same water may move through a channel rather than remain in a stable pool.

Lake Vostok as a scale example

The British Antarctic Survey describes Lake Vostok beneath East Antarctica as more than 500 metres deep and approximately the size of Lake Ontario. Those figures come from that overview and describe the well-known example; they are not dimensions that apply to subglacial lakes generally. Vostok illustrates how a very large basin can persist under an ice sheet while remaining isolated from the surface for extremely long periods.

Are all subglacial lakes isolated?

No. A useful distinction is between relatively stable reservoirs and active, connected systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Relatively isolated reservoirs

Some lakes are enclosed by bedrock and ice-pressure gradients that limit exchange. Their water may be replenished slowly by basal melting and removed slowly, if at all. Chemical layering and circulation in such a lake can differ greatly from those in a wind-mixed surface lake. “Isolated” does not mean perfectly sealed: heat, dissolved minerals and tiny amounts of water can still enter or leave over geological or hydrological timescales.

Filling and draining systems

Other lakes are nodes in pressurized drainage networks. Water can accumulate until its pressure opens or enlarges a route, then drain into another lake, a subglacial channel or a downstream outlet. NASA’s account of West Antarctica describes lakes that fill and drain in response to pressure from the overlying ice. The event may alter the ice surface by only a small amount while moving a large volume of water below.

This connection does not turn a subglacial lake into an ocean. The lake remains a discrete basin; the network is the pathway through which water can eventually reach the ocean. Ocean status is defined by marine connection and basin scale, not simply by whether water can travel downstream.

How do scientists detect hidden lakes?

Researchers cannot normally look through kilometres of ice with an ordinary camera. They combine several indirect observations.

Radar and bed mapping

Airborne and satellite radar can send signals through ice and identify reflections from a relatively smooth, water-bearing bed. Repeated surveys help distinguish a probable lake from frozen bedrock, saturated sediment or a channel. Radar maps reveal geometry and extent, but they do not by themselves provide a complete sample of the water’s chemistry or biology.

Surface-height changes

ICESat-2 and other satellite laser altimeters measure the elevation of the ice surface. When a subglacial lake fills, the ice above can rise subtly; when it drains, the surface can sag. NASA’s ICESat-2 visualization explains that these surface signatures allow scientists to infer changing lake volume. The laser does not see directly through the ice or photograph the water.

Ice-flow and pressure models

Surface velocity, ice thickness, bed elevation and pressure calculations are combined to estimate where water should move. Agreement between modelled drainage paths, radar evidence and repeated surface changes strengthens the interpretation. Each method has uncertainties, especially where observations are sparse or the drainage geometry changes quickly.

Why are subglacial lakes dark, cold and high-pressure?

The British Antarctic Survey’s 2012 review summarizes Antarctic subglacial lakes as permanently dark, near −3°C and under pressure of roughly 350 atmospheres. These are review-level characterizations for Antarctic settings, not universal readings for every lake beneath every glacier.

Darkness removes photosynthesis as a direct energy source. Any biological community would need chemical energy, material delivered by water or ice, or another food pathway. Cold slows many reactions, while pressure can affect membranes, gases and the stability of minerals. Internal circulation may be driven by geothermal heating, melting and freezing at different parts of the lake, or by inflow and outflow through connected channels.

Is subglacial water fresh or salty?

Salinity is not the defining dividing line. Basal meltwater from ice is often relatively fresh, but water can acquire dissolved minerals from bedrock, sediments and chemical reactions. Long isolation, evaporation before burial, marine sediments or exchange with older water can also affect composition. Consequently, “subglacial” should never be used as a synonym for “freshwater.”

A National Academies chapter reports an estimated Lake Vostok salinity of about 0.4–1.2 parts per thousand, compared with approximately 35 parts per thousand for ocean water. The Vostok range is an indirect estimate, not a direct measurement of the entire lake, because lake water had not been sampled directly in the evidence summarized by the Antarctic review. It is best used as a qualified comparison rather than a universal value.

What is known about life beneath the ice?

Scientists distinguish closed, isolated systems from lakes connected to subglacial rivers. An isolated basin may have limited nutrients and very slow exchange; a connected system can receive sediment, dissolved chemicals and organic material from elsewhere. NASA Astrobiology notes that habitats can differ in salinity, circulation and layering even when they are all called subglacial lakes.

Claims about microbes in Lake Vostok require particular care. The 2012 BAS/Nature review noted that, at that time, evidence about chemistry and microbial life was inferred from accreted lake ice rather than from a direct sample of lake water. Accreted ice forms when lake water freezes onto the underside of the overlying ice and carries some material upward. It can provide clues, but it is not equivalent to collecting water from multiple depths in the lake.

That evidential limit does not imply that subglacial lakes are sterile. It means the presence, abundance and diversity of organisms must be stated lake by lake, with the sampling method and uncertainty made clear.

How do lakes affect glaciers and sea level?

Water at the ice-bed interface can reduce friction between ice and bedrock. A change in basal water pressure can therefore accelerate or slow an ice stream. Connected lakes and channels redistribute water, sometimes changing the speed pattern over a broad area rather than directly “floating” the entire ice sheet.

NASA’s Sea Level Change portal describes subglacial water systems as relevant to basal friction, ice flow and drainage toward the ocean. The effect is indirect but important: the lake does not raise sea level merely by existing beneath the ice. If water leaves the ice sheet, it can contribute to ocean volume, while altered ice flow can change how much solid ice is delivered to the sea.

A historical NASA Earth Observatory account reported about 35 billion tons of ice delivered to the ocean annually by Recovery Ice Stream. That is a source-specific historical rate from 2007, not a current global average or a representative value for every ice stream.

“Large subglacial lakes that clearly initiate streaming flow in a major ice stream have never been so completely documented before,”

NASA Earth Observatory attributed that observation to Chris Shuman, a co-author and NASA Goddard researcher, in its 2007 account. The statement concerns documentation of a particular Antarctic system, not proof that every lake initiates streaming flow.

How many subglacial lakes are there?

A 2022 review in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment inventoried 773 subglacial lakes worldwide:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 675 in Antarctica
  • 64 in Greenland
  • 2 beneath Devon Ice Cap
  • 6 beneath Iceland’s ice caps
  • 26 beneath valley glaciers

This is the scope of that review’s inventory, not a permanent census. Earlier Antarctic counts were lower because radar coverage, satellite observations and identification methods improved over time. New surveys can add candidates, merge previously separate detections or reclassify features as more data become available.

What a subglacial lake is not

  • Not simply a lake with surface ice: the water must lie beneath a glacier or ice sheet, not merely under seasonal ice.
  • Not automatically an ocean: even a connected lake system remains a set of inland basins beneath ice unless the water body itself is marine and sea-connected.
  • Not always motionless: some reservoirs are comparatively stable, while others fill, drain and reorganize pressurized pathways.
  • Not uniformly fresh: chemistry varies with bedrock, sediments, residence time and connectivity.
  • Not directly observed in every detail: surface elevation and radar can reveal geometry and change, while temperature, chemistry and biology may remain inferred where drilling has not produced direct samples.

The practical takeaway

The decisive difference is physical setting. An ordinary lake interacts with the atmosphere and commonly receives light; an ocean is a vast marine system connected to the sea; a subglacial lake is a dark, pressurized basin beneath grounded ice. Geothermal heat, insulation and pressure keep its water liquid, while bed topography and hydraulic pressure determine whether it remains isolated or joins an active drainage network. Those hidden water pathways matter because they can change friction beneath glaciers, redirect meltwater and influence how ice reaches the ocean.
