Speedrunners break a game open by studying how it behaves, testing unexpected interactions, and turning useful discoveries into repeatable routes—within the rules of a specific category. A faster run might come from cleaner movement, but it can also come from skipping or reordering intended content. Not every category allows every trick, and a surprising glitch is not automatically useful or legal.
What does it mean to “break a game open”?
It means learning enough about a game’s behavior to find a route that reaches the finish faster than the ordinary path. That can involve optimizing movement through the intended level, exploiting an interaction, passing beyond a boundary, or reaching a trigger out of order. These are broad kinds of opportunities, not claims about any particular game.
Sequence breaking is one way a route can save time: instead of completing content in the intended order, a runner skips or rearranges part of it. The 2004 Gaming Hacks excerpt on “Sequence-Break Quake” discusses sequence breaking in a speedrunning context. A route can therefore be faster without requiring the runner simply to move faster at every moment.

There is no established universal discovery method. Some stories begin with an accidental oddity; others start when someone deliberately experiments with movement, boundaries, or the order in which objectives are triggered. Community discussions provide anecdotes of both kinds, not evidence about how often each occurs. A useful way to understand the process is as a sequence of questions:

-
Notice a behavior or a bottleneck
A runner may see the character behave unexpectedly, or notice that a required-looking section consumes time. The observation could be as small as an unusual movement interaction or as significant as reaching a trigger earlier than intended.
-
Try to reproduce it
Repeat the circumstances and vary one condition at a time: position, timing, movement, or the order of actions. The goal is to learn what reliably causes the behavior, rather than treating a one-off event as a usable trick.
-
Check whether it improves the route
A reproducible oddity is not automatically a speedrun improvement. Work out whether it avoids meaningful time or objectives, and whether the rest of the route still works after the change.

Share and refine the setup
Other runners can try the setup, identify failure points, and refine its execution. A trick becomes more useful when its conditions and timing are clear enough to repeat in an actual run. This four-stage account is an explanatory model, not a verified workflow followed by every runner.
Does every speedrun category allow glitches?
No. A speedrun is judged under a particular game’s ruleset. Speedrun.com’s API documentation defines a run as “a finished attempt to play a game, adhering to that game’s ruleset.” Categories can differ in what techniques they permit, and the boundary between a glitch and a glitchless run is not always straightforward. A 2019 article in the Japanese Journal of Digital Humanities discusses the difficulty of defining glitches and drawing the boundaries of glitchless categories.
| Approach | What it can mean for the route | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Glitchless or restricted category | Optimizes the route while excluding techniques barred by that category; what counts as a glitch can depend on the game and its rules. | Read the category’s full rules rather than assuming that “glitchless” has one universal definition. |
| Category that permits some glitches | May allow a skip, reordered objective, or other technique if the game’s rules permit it. | Check which techniques are allowed; the label alone does not establish the boundary. |
Speedrun.com’s submission guidance tells runners to include the game version used and notes that game-specific restrictions can affect whether a submission follows the rules. Its beginner guidance recommends reading the full rules. Check the current rules for the exact game and category before relying on a trick; do not assume a technique is legal just because it works.

Why do version and platform matter?
A trick’s behavior and a run’s eligibility are tied to context. The version used is part of the information Speedrun.com asks submitters to provide, and category rules may impose game-specific restrictions. Record the version and platform relevant to the run, then consult the current category rules; a route or technique should not be treated as valid across versions without support from those rules.
What makes a discovery useful in a real run?
Usefulness depends on more than whether something unusual can happen. A runner needs to know whether the behavior saves meaningful time, whether it can be repeated consistently, and whether the category permits it. A surprising event that cannot be reproduced may be interesting, but it is not yet a dependable route element. Community anecdotes can illustrate how discoveries emerge, but they do not establish how common any discovery path is or how much time a specific trick saves.
Tool-assisted analysis and real-time run rules are separate questions. The sources cited here do not establish what tools are allowed for any particular game or category. Check that category’s rules rather than inferring permission from the fact that a technique can be analyzed or practiced in another way.

-
Choose the game and category first
Find the current rules for the category you want to run. If the rules distinguish versions, platforms, or techniques, treat those distinctions as part of the route problem.
-
Keep observations separate from conclusions
Note what happened, the conditions you observed, and whether you have reproduced it. Do not describe a one-time surprise as a reliable trick.

Test the route impact
Ask what content the behavior skips or reorders and whether the changed route still reaches the required finish. A shortcut matters only if it improves the route that the category actually accepts.
-
Confirm eligibility before submitting
Use the rules for the exact game and category, and include the version when submitting as requested by Speedrun.com. If a rule is unclear, do not assume the most permissive interpretation.
