Scientists cannot usually see nursing directly in a fossil. Instead, they look for indirect clues in teeth, bones, body size, growth and reproductive anatomy, and sometimes chemical traces in ancient tissues. Taken together, these clues can make milk feeding a persuasive explanation—but they do not preserve milk or prove that a particular fossil animal nursed.
Can scientists find evidence of breastfeeding in fossils?
Not as a preserved act of nursing. Mammary glands and milk are soft tissues, and the Natural History Museum in London said in a 6 September 2022 account that mammary glands had not been preserved in any fossils found to date. Fossil evidence instead records features that researchers interpret in light of how young animals develop and feed. The museum’s report on fossil tooth records makes an important distinction: evidence that helps identify an animal as a mammal is not automatically evidence that a specific individual drank milk.
That distinction matters because scientists may be asking different questions. One is whether an animal belonged to a group with mammalian characteristics. Another is whether members of its lineage likely fed their young with milk. A third is whether one particular juvenile did so. Fossils may help answer the first two through patterns of anatomy and development, but a conclusion about an individual’s feeding history is harder to establish.
There is no single score, percentage or universal fossil test that settles the question. The strongest inferences come from several independent clues that fit together, while accounting for what each clue can—and cannot—show.

How can teeth show whether a baby animal drank milk?
Teeth are useful because their hard tissues often preserve when soft parts do not. Researchers can compare tooth formation, eruption, replacement and wear in juvenile and adult fossils. These patterns help reconstruct developmental timing and changes in feeding as an animal grew. They can indicate when an animal began relying on teeth to process food, but they do not record milk itself.
Tooth development and eruption
If tooth development appears delayed relative to other features of growth, researchers may consider whether young animals spent a period dependent on nourishment supplied by a parent before they could feed more independently. Work on mammaliaforms has described delayed tooth development as suggestive of milk intake. The wording is deliberately cautious: delayed development is a clue compatible with milk feeding, not a direct trace of nursing. Olav T. Oftedal’s 2020 review of lactation’s evolution discusses the broader evolutionary context.
Tooth replacement
The number and timing of tooth replacements can also provide information about a young animal’s development. Limited tooth replacement in some advanced cynodonts and early mammaliaforms has been interpreted as consistent with early dependence on milk. This interpretation becomes more useful when considered alongside body size, growth and other anatomical evidence; tooth replacement alone cannot establish what a juvenile ate.

What a tooth-based identification does not prove
The Brasilodon fossils discussed by the Natural History Museum date to about 225 million years ago. In the museum’s report, dental evidence contributes to an argument about mammalian status. That result should not be turned into a claim that the fossils directly show Brasilodon nursing, or that any particular Brasilodon individual drank milk. Classification and feeding history are related questions, but they are not interchangeable.
What can body size and reproductive anatomy add?
Fossil teeth are only one part of the picture. Researchers also consider body size, growth patterns and reproductive anatomy when evaluating whether early synapsids or mammaliaforms may have fed their young with milk. The reasoning is evolutionary: a combination of features can be consistent with a life history in which small, developing young received nourishment before feeding more independently.
In a 2002 review, Olav T. Oftedal argued that advanced Triassic therapsids such as cynodonts almost certainly secreted nutrient-rich milk. His interpretation draws on small body size, epipubic bones and limited tooth replacement in advanced cynodonts and early mammaliaforms. Those features support an account of early mammalian relatives and their life histories; they are not fossilized mammary glands or direct records of parental behavior. Oftedal’s review on the mammary gland’s origin during synapsid evolution sets out this evolutionary argument.

A related review considers late-Triassic mammaliaforms about 210 million years ago, describing them as small, endothermic animals with rapid growth and limited tooth replacement. Oftedal interpreted that combination as consistent with delayed feeding and reliance on milk. The date refers to the animals discussed in that interpretation; it is not a measurement of when nursing began. His 2012 review of the ancient origins of milk secretion explains the proposed connection.

Can chemistry reveal a shift from milk to other foods?
Sometimes chemical signals in preserved teeth or bone can help reconstruct dietary change. Stable isotope and trace-element analyses examine patterns in ancient tissues that may reflect a change in what an animal consumed. Applied to a growing individual, such evidence can contribute to an inference about breastfeeding and weaning: a changing signal may be consistent with a transition from milk toward other foods.

A review by Takumi Tsutaya and Minoru Yoneda describes the use of these methods on bone and teeth, including the potential for tooth enamel to provide fine resolution. It also emphasizes that proxy selection and biological processes affect how a signal should be interpreted; trace-element metabolism, in particular, needs further study. A chemical difference is therefore not a label that says “milk.” Researchers need to consider how the tissue formed, what the chosen proxy can represent and whether other evidence supports the same feeding history. The review of isotope and trace-element analyses for reconstructing breastfeeding and weaning discusses both their uses and limitations.
These chemical approaches complement anatomical evidence rather than replacing it. Teeth can preserve developmental patterns and, in some cases, chemical signals; bones can also retain chemical information. When several kinds of evidence point toward the same dietary transition, the inference may be stronger than one based on a single proxy. Even then, the conclusion remains an interpretation of preserved material, not direct observation of nursing.

What do fossils of very young animals tell us?
Very young fossils, sometimes called perinates, can help researchers investigate reproduction and early growth. Their size and developmental features may reveal something about when young animals were born and how they changed as they matured. But a juvenile fossil does not by itself show whether it was fed milk, another food, or a combination of foods.

Research on Jurassic stem-mammal perinates examines the origins of mammalian reproduction and growth, while noting that the timing and sequence of the transitions involved are not fully known because direct fossil evidence is lacking. Perinates can add important pieces to the picture, but the fossil record does not capture every step in the evolution of reproductive strategies. The 2018 study of Jurassic stem-mammal perinates discusses this evidence and its limits.

Different clues preserve different parts of an animal’s life history. A useful interpretation asks what a particular fossil feature records, how closely that record relates to nursing and what alternative explanations or uncertainties remain.

How do scientists reach a careful conclusion?
The inference is strongest when researchers identify what each observation can establish before combining the clues. A practical way to read a claim about nursing in an extinct animal is to ask:
- What was observed? Is the evidence a tooth pattern, anatomy, a chemical signal, or a very young fossil?
- What conclusion does that observation support? Does it suggest mammalian identity, a developmental pattern, a dietary change or a broader reproductive strategy?
- Is the conclusion about a lineage or one individual? Evidence consistent with milk feeding across a group is not proof that a named fossil animal was nursed.
- Do independent clues agree? Dental patterns, anatomy, growth and chemical proxies answer different questions; agreement among them can make an interpretation more persuasive.
- What uncertainty remains? Preservation, proxy choice and incomplete fossils can limit what researchers can infer.
This is why careful scientific writing often says that evidence is “consistent with nursing” or that scientists “infer milk feeding.” Those phrases describe a reasoned conclusion without suggesting that fossils preserve a feeding event they do not show.
What can a fossil record establish—and what can it not?
Fossils can preserve developmental and anatomical clues, and some ancient tissues can preserve chemical traces that help reconstruct diet. These records allow researchers to test whether milk feeding is a plausible explanation for the development and life history of extinct animals. They can also help trace how features associated with mammalian reproduction and growth emerged over time.
But the evidence is indirect. A tooth cannot show milk, a body-size pattern cannot show a parent nursing, and a chemical proxy must be interpreted rather than read as a literal record of feeding. Scientists can make a strong, evidence-based case that an ancient lineage likely nursed its young when several independent clues align. They should not present that inference as direct proof that a particular fossil individual did.
