Scientists answer two different questions when they measure light. The speed of light in vacuum is now an exact defined value: 299,792,458 meters per second. The International System of Units (SI) fixes that number and defines the meter from it, so modern experiments do not treat the vacuum speed as an unknown quantity. Instead, researchers measure travel times, optical frequencies, wavelengths, or propagation through materials to realize lengths, characterize sources, and test measurement systems.
A particular source’s wavelength is still an experimental measurement. A diffraction grating, for example, spreads a laser into bright orders whose angles reveal its wavelength through nλ = d sinθ. The method, reference standard, and main uncertainty are different from those used in historical speed-of-light experiments.
What “speed” and “wavelength” mean

c = fλ
- c is the speed of light in vacuum.
- f is the wave’s frequency, measured in hertz.
- λ is its vacuum wavelength, measured in meters.
Speed describes how quickly a wavefront travels. Frequency describes how many oscillations pass a point each second. Wavelength is the distance between successive wave crests. They are related, but measuring one does not automatically measure the others with the same apparatus.

Inside glass, air, water, or another material, use the material’s propagation speed and wavelength instead: v = fλmaterial. The frequency is associated with the source, while the speed and wavelength change with the medium’s optical properties. Therefore, a wavelength measured in a material should not be reported as though it were the source’s vacuum wavelength without accounting for that medium.
The present-day value of the speed of light
The number is exact by definition
The SI fixes the speed of light in vacuum at exactly 299,792,458 m/s. The meter is defined as the distance light travels in vacuum during a specified fraction of a second based on that value. This is a definition, not a claim that a stopwatch or detector can resolve 299,792,458 m/s with zero experimental uncertainty.
When a laboratory reports an uncertainty today, it is usually reporting uncertainty in a realized length, frequency, time interval, or propagation experiment—not uncertainty in the defined SI constant itself. The distinction matters: the fixed value supplies the reference against which instruments and experiments are calibrated.

Before the meter was tied to a fixed value of c, progressively better measurements narrowed the accepted value. The National Institute of Standards and Technology reports the following stabilized-laser result:
299,792,456.2 ± 1.1 meters per second — National Institute of Standards and Technology, 1972 measurement.
This is a historical measurement with an uncertainty, not the current defined value. Improvements in laser stabilization, optical-frequency measurement, and length metrology helped make it practical to redefine the meter through c.

How scientists historically determined the speed of light
1. Timing light over an astronomical distance
The first successful inferences did not send a beam between two laboratory clocks. Astronomers observed events in the sky whose apparent timing changed as Earth moved along its orbit. A delay that depended on Earth’s changing position indicated that light took a finite time to travel, rather than arriving instantaneously.
Recommended Free Tools
The logic is a time-of-flight calculation:
- Identify a recurring astronomical event whose timing can be compared.
- Determine how the observing geometry changes the light path.
- Measure the timing difference.
- Divide the inferred path-length difference by the time difference.
Astronomical baselines are enormous, so even limited clocks and observers could detect a delay. The result depended on the quality of the astronomical model and timing observations, but it established that light’s speed was finite.
2. Measuring a terrestrial time of flight
The direct laboratory idea is simple: send light across a known baseline, measure the travel time, and calculate:
speed = distance ÷ travel time
For a one-way path, the receiver must share a sufficiently accurate time reference with the transmitter. Many terrestrial arrangements instead send light to a distant reflector and back, measuring a round-trip time. In that case, the measured distance is twice the baseline, and the timing system must distinguish the brief delay from the much larger delays in electronics and detectors.
Historical instruments used mechanical or optical modulation to make the delay observable. Rotating toothed wheels periodically interrupted a beam; at particular rotation rates, the returning light was blocked or transmitted in a recognizable pattern. Rotating mirrors performed a related function by turning a tiny angular change during the light’s flight into a measurable displacement or change in direction.

- Timing resolution and the stability of the clock or rotation rate.
- Uncertainty in the physical distance between optical stations.
- Beam alignment, atmospheric effects, and detector response.
- Separating the light’s travel time from delays in cables, electronics, and optical components.
These experiments measured a quantity that could be compared with an independently realized meter and second. They were conceptually direct, but the required timing precision becomes severe as the baseline shrinks.
3. Multiplying frequency by wavelength
A second family of methods uses the wave relation c = fλ. If a laboratory can measure a light source’s frequency and wavelength independently, multiplying them gives an estimate of the propagation speed in vacuum.
Frequency measurement became much more precise when laboratories used stabilized lasers. A stabilized laser supplies a highly regular optical oscillation, while interferometric or geometric techniques determine its wavelength or an equivalent length. Better frequency references and better length standards then reduce the uncertainty in the product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis approach does not time an individual pulse traveling between two stations. It measures the repeating structure of the wave and its spatial period. The result is still a speed estimate because frequency counts cycles per second and wavelength measures the distance covered by each cycle.
Why modern laboratories do not treat vacuum c as an unknown
The SI redefinition changed the role of these experiments. Since c is fixed exactly, a frequency measurement can help realize a length, and a length measurement can help characterize a frequency, without attempting to revise the numerical value of the vacuum speed.
Researchers still perform propagation experiments to study materials, verify timing and distance systems, compare independent standards, and investigate whether an instrument behaves as expected. Those are tests of a setup or a physical medium. They are not attempts to discover a more accurate value of the defined vacuum constant.

How scientists measure the wavelength of a particular light source
Diffraction grating: the practical method
A diffraction grating has many equally spaced lines or grooves. When coherent, nearly monochromatic light from a laser strikes the grating, waves from neighboring grooves interfere constructively at particular angles. Bright spots, called diffraction orders, appear on a screen.
For a grating with line spacing d, the bright orders satisfy:
nλ = d sinθ
- n is the diffraction order: 0, ±1, ±2, and so on.
- λ is the laser’s wavelength in the surrounding medium, normally air for a classroom setup.
- d is the known distance between adjacent grating lines.
- θ is the angle from the straight-through, zero-order beam to the selected bright order.
Once d, n, and θ are known, calculate the wavelength:
λ = (d sinθ) ÷ n
Step-by-step laser wavelength procedure
- Choose the source. Use a coherent, nearly monochromatic laser. A broad-spectrum lamp produces overlapping colors and is not suited to this simple single-wavelength calculation.
- Verify the grating spacing. Use the manufacturer’s calibrated line spacing or line density. Do not substitute an approximate visual estimate.
- Mount the grating squarely. Keep the grating face perpendicular to the incoming beam unless the experiment specifically accounts for a different incidence angle.
- Place a screen in the diffracted beam. Mark the central zero-order spot and the first or higher bright orders on both sides when visible.
- Measure the geometry. Record the perpendicular distance from the grating to the screen and the sideways displacement from the central spot to an order. Use the right-triangle geometry to obtain θ; if the screen distance is L and displacement is y, then tanθ = y/L.
- Calculate each order. Insert the angle, order number, and grating spacing into nλ = d sinθ. Calculate the wavelength separately for the left and right spots when possible.
- Check consistency. Agreement between opposite sides and between more than one order is evidence that the alignment and measurements are reasonable. Large disagreement points to an incorrect grating spacing, a misplaced zero-order mark, or an angle measured from the wrong reference.
Measuring a larger screen distance generally makes the spot displacement easier to read, while higher orders can produce larger angles. However, higher orders may be dimmer or overlap if the source is not sufficiently monochromatic. Use the clearest order that remains well separated and within the screen area.
What limits the result
The grating equation is exact for the stated geometry, but the result inherits practical uncertainties:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Uncertainty in the grating’s calibrated spacing.
- Ruler resolution when measuring screen distance and spot displacement.
- Finite spot width and difficulty identifying the center of a bright order.
- Grating tilt or beam misalignment.
- Using the wrong order number or measuring the angle from the wrong axis.
- Air or another medium between the grating and screen, if the result is being interpreted as a vacuum wavelength without correction.
A classroom diffraction arrangement demonstrates the method and can produce a useful estimate. It should not be presented as research-grade metrology unless the grating, geometry, wavelength reference, and uncertainty analysis have all been independently calibrated.

Optional equipment for a hands-on demonstration
A laser diffraction grating kit or a known-spacing diffraction grating can package the grating, screen, and alignment instructions for instructional use. A handheld spectroscope is different: it can show that a source has particular spectral features, but it should be treated as an observation tool unless its wavelength scale and calibration performance are verified.

Optical frequencies oscillate far too rapidly for ordinary electronic counters to count every cycle directly. An optical frequency comb creates a set of precisely spaced optical lines whose spacing is tied to a microwave or radio-frequency reference. By measuring the comb’s relationship to a stabilized laser, a laboratory can connect an optical frequency to a lower-frequency signal that electronics can count.
This frequency chain allows measurements to move between optical and microwave domains while preserving a known reference. It supports precision spectroscopy, comparisons of optical standards, and the frequency side of experiments that historically used the product of frequency and wavelength. The comb does not replace the diffraction equation for a basic laser demonstration; it provides a much more precise route to the source’s optical frequency.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling the defined value an ordinary measurement
Do not write that a modern stopwatch has measured the vacuum speed with no uncertainty. State that c is exactly defined in SI, then describe the uncertainty of the particular realization or experiment.
Confusing a laser wavelength with light speed
A diffraction pattern gives a wavelength after the grating spacing and angle are known. It does not directly measure the vacuum speed of light. To connect wavelength to speed, an independent frequency measurement is required through c = fλ.
Using the wrong medium
Specify whether the reported wavelength is in vacuum, air, or another material. The same source frequency can correspond to a different wavelength when propagation speed changes in a medium.
Ignoring order and angle conventions
Use the angle between the central beam and the chosen order, not the full angle between two symmetric spots. Include the order number n; a second-order spot is not interchangeable with a first-order spot.
Neglecting laser safety
One instructional practical specifies a Class 2 laser with a maximum output of 1 mW and warns against accidental eye exposure. Never look into the beam or aim it at another person, reflective surface, vehicle, or aircraft. Follow the safety instructions supplied with the device and the requirements of your jurisdiction and laboratory.
Quick Recap
Which method should you use?
- To understand why scientists concluded that light travels at a finite speed, study astronomical timing and terrestrial time-of-flight methods.
- To measure the wavelength of a classroom laser, use a known-spacing diffraction grating and screen, then calculate the angle and apply nλ = d sinθ.
- To obtain a highly precise optical frequency, use a stabilized source and a frequency reference; an optical frequency comb can bridge the optical signal to countable radio or microwave frequencies.
- To study light in glass, water, or another medium, measure or calculate the medium-specific speed and wavelength rather than silently substituting the vacuum value.
