Scientists do not place a thermometer on a distant planet. They measure the thermal radiation arriving at a telescope or spacecraft, separate that signal by wavelength when possible, and use physical models to infer the temperature of the surface or atmospheric layer that produced it. Repeating the measurements as the world rotates or orbits can reveal how heat is distributed and whether the observed region changes.
The result is therefore an inference, not a direct contact measurement. Its meaning depends on the wavelength, viewing geometry, time coverage, atmospheric composition and the part of the world contributing most of the detected radiation.
How do scientists measure the temperature of a planet so far away?
Every object warmer than absolute zero emits electromagnetic radiation. A planet, moon or asteroid radiates energy according to its temperature, with the amount and wavelength distribution changing as the object warms or cools. A radiometer measures the intensity of that thermal energy in one or more wavelength bands. NASA describes infrared radiometers as instruments used to determine planetary thermal output and other thermal properties (NASA’s overview of science instruments).

The resulting spectrum can reveal temperature signatures alongside evidence of atmospheric gases. Because molecules absorb and emit at characteristic wavelengths, different parts of a spectrum may sample different pressures, altitudes or depths. A temperature estimate must therefore identify what region produced the measured radiation.

From photons to a temperature estimate
- Collect the radiation. A telescope, planetary spacecraft or orbiting observatory records infrared, microwave or other relevant wavelengths.
- Calibrate the signal. Scientists correct for detector response, instrumental noise and other effects so the measured intensity has a physical meaning.
- Remove competing light and backgrounds. For an exoplanet, the host star usually dominates the combined signal; for a spacecraft observation, stray light and instrument effects also have to be modeled.
- Fit a physical model. Researchers compare the calibrated intensity or spectrum with models of thermal emission, atmospheric composition, clouds and viewing geometry.
- Report the result with its label. The output may be a brightness temperature at a particular wavelength, a dayside temperature, a surface estimate or an atmospheric-layer temperature—not necessarily a global average.
The detector directly measures radiation. Temperature is the modeled interpretation of that radiation, and the interpretation can change if the assumed atmosphere, cloud cover or emitting altitude changes.
What does a reported “temperature” actually describe?
A single number can be misleading unless its scope is stated. Scientists attach a label that tells readers which part of the world and which measurement definition are involved.
| Label | What it means | Common limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Dayside temperature | An estimate for the hemisphere facing the star, often inferred during a secondary eclipse. | It does not describe the nightside or a planet-wide average. |
| Brightness temperature | The temperature a blackbody would need to have to produce the measured intensity at a stated wavelength. | Atmospheric gases and clouds can make it differ from the physical temperature at the surface. |
| Surface temperature | An estimate of the ground or solid surface contributing to the signal. | It is difficult to infer when an atmosphere, dust or clouds obscure the surface. |
| Atmospheric-layer temperature | A temperature associated with the altitude or pressure level sensed by a wavelength range. | Different wavelengths may probe different layers, so there may be no single atmospheric temperature. |
| Global average | An average over the whole world and, usually, over a defined time period. | It requires broad spatial and temporal coverage; one hemisphere or one eclipse cannot establish it. |
When reading a result, check the observed wavelength, the visible hemisphere, the date and duration of observations, and whether the source gives a surface, atmospheric or brightness temperature. A value measured from one infrared band should not automatically be presented as the planet’s overall climate.

An exoplanet is usually far dimmer than its host star. Even a large space telescope may see only the combined light of the star and planet. A particularly useful alignment occurs during a secondary eclipse: the planet passes behind the star from Earth’s viewpoint.

- Measure the combined system. Before and after the eclipse, the detector records the star’s light plus the planet’s light.
- Observe the eclipse. While the planet is hidden behind the star, the detector receives essentially the star-only signal at the selected wavelength.
- Subtract the star-only level. The difference between the out-of-eclipse and in-eclipse brightness estimates the planet’s emitted light.
- Repeat at other wavelengths when possible. Comparing infrared bands helps distinguish a temperature effect from absorption or emission by atmospheric molecules.
- Model the geometry and atmosphere. The measured contrast is converted into a temperature estimate for the hemisphere that was visible immediately before it disappeared.
This differential method is powerful because the star serves as a reference measured with the same instrument. It is also demanding: the eclipse signal can be much less than one percent of the system’s brightness, so detector stability, stellar variability and repeated observations matter.
NASA’s educational explanation of the technique describes how measuring the system before and during a secondary eclipse isolates the planet’s contribution (How to Measure Exoplanet Light).
How do repeated observations reveal temperature changes?
A single eclipse samples one viewing geometry. To learn how heat is distributed, astronomers observe the system at multiple orbital phases. As the planet travels around its star, different longitudes rotate into view. The infrared brightness rises and falls as hotter and cooler regions contribute different amounts of radiation.

A time series of brightness measurements is called a phase curve. Its shape can indicate whether the hottest region sits directly beneath the star or has been shifted east or west by atmospheric winds. The difference between the brightest and faintest phases constrains the contrast between the dayside and nightside, while the timing of the peak gives information about heat transport.

With sufficient signal and phase coverage, scientists convert the changing brightness into a temperature-versus-longitude map. NASA’s Webb explainer describes combining such a heat-emission map with spectroscopy to build a three-dimensional atmospheric model (How Will Webb Study Exoplanets?).
What repeated data can and cannot show
- Repeated observations can reveal persistent hot and cool regions, day–night contrasts and evidence that winds redistribute heat.
- They can show that the measured brightness changes over an orbit, but brightness alone does not uniquely determine atmospheric circulation.
- Several atmospheric models may fit the same limited data, especially when only one or two wavelength bands are available.
- Detailed maps require adequate signal strength, stable calibration, favorable geometry and enough observations at different phases.
In practice, astronomers combine phase curves with spectra, stellar models and assumptions about clouds and chemistry rather than treating a brightness variation as a direct thermometer reading.
Why does wavelength matter so much?
Thermal radiation is not uniform across the electromagnetic spectrum. A hot surface and a cooler surface emit different spectral distributions, and atmospheric molecules can selectively absorb or emit energy. Measuring a broad infrared band gives an integrated intensity; measuring many narrow bands can identify which gases and pressure levels shape the signal.
For example, a wavelength that passes through a relatively transparent atmospheric window may sense deeper, warmer layers, while a wavelength strongly absorbed by a gas may emerge from higher, cooler layers. Clouds can also block radiation from below and replace it with emission from their own temperature level. Consequently, two instruments observing the same world at different wavelengths may report different brightness temperatures without either measurement being wrong.

NASA’s Thermal Emission Spectrometer documentation explains how wavelength-resolved thermal measurements provide information about planetary materials and temperatures (TES instrument description). The correct interpretation is always tied to the bandpass and the modeled emitting region.
What did Webb learn from TRAPPIST-1 b?
TRAPPIST-1 b is a rocky exoplanet orbiting a small star about 40 light-years away. NASA reported that the James Webb Space Telescope’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) measured the planet’s thermal emission using secondary-eclipse photometry (NASA’s Webb temperature report).
| Reported detail | What it means |
|---|---|
| About 500 kelvins, roughly 450 degrees Fahrenheit | A modeled temperature for TRAPPIST-1 b’s dayside in the cited 2023 result, not a global average. |
| Five observations combined | The result used multiple secondary-eclipse measurements rather than a single exposure. |
| Less than 0.1 percent eclipse brightness decrease | The planet’s disappearance produced a very small change in the combined star–planet signal. |
| 0.027 percent sensitivity | The smallest brightness change NASA said MIRI could detect for this observation; it is not a universal Webb performance guarantee. |
Because the measurement observed the planet disappearing behind its star, the reported value describes the hemisphere that faces the star. It does not establish the nightside temperature, a surface temperature everywhere on the planet or a whole-planet average. NASA quoted Thomas Greene of NASA Ames saying, “An image of this planet from Webb is impossible because it is too close to its star and too far from us.” The eclipse method extracts useful information even when a resolved image cannot be obtained.
How do exoplanet measurements differ from nearby planetary observations?
The same physical principle—thermal radiation carries temperature information—works across the Solar System and beyond, but the observing geometry and inference are different.

| Comparison axis | Nearby Solar System target | Distant exoplanet |
|---|---|---|
| Target and geometry | A spacecraft or telescope can observe a disk, surface region or atmosphere directly. | The planet is generally an unresolved point blended with its star. |
| Typical signal | Infrared or microwave emission can be strong enough for spatially resolved measurements. | The planet’s signal may be a tiny change in total star–planet brightness. |
| Region sampled | Specific surface areas, cloud tops or, at some wavelengths, subsurface depths. | Usually a hemisphere or an atmospheric layer averaged over the visible disk. |
| Time coverage | Repeated passes can track local features and seasonal changes. | Eclipses and orbital phase curves sample changing longitudes over repeated orbits. |
| Interpretation | Calibration plus models of the local surface and atmosphere. | Calibration plus models of stellar light, atmospheric chemistry and the emitting level. |
This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating a distant exoplanet temperature as if it came from a global map. The available data may support only a disk-averaged dayside estimate or a wavelength-specific brightness temperature.
How can microwaves probe below a visible surface?
Infrared observations generally describe radiation emerging from the outer surface or atmosphere, but longer wavelengths can sometimes penetrate farther. NASA’s Juno mission used microwave observations of Io’s thermal emission to investigate temperatures at different depths beneath the visible surface (NASA’s Juno observations of Io).
Io is a nearby moon observed by a spacecraft, not an exoplanet measured through a stellar eclipse. Its microwave signal can carry information from subsurface layers because the material is partially transparent at those wavelengths. By comparing channels that sense different depths, researchers infer how temperature varies below the surface. The example shows why “the temperature” is incomplete without a wavelength and a sampled depth.

- Atmospheric composition: Unknown gases alter which wavelengths escape and can imitate a temperature change.
- Clouds and haze: They may hide the surface and shift the effective emitting level to a cooler or warmer altitude.
- Stellar variability: Flares, spots and changing activity can alter the star’s brightness and contaminate a tiny planetary signal.
- Instrument stability: Detector drift and calibration errors matter when the eclipse signal is only a few hundredths of a percent.
- Limited viewing geometry: One eclipse or one phase samples only part of the world.
- Model degeneracy: Different combinations of temperature, chemistry and clouds can produce similar spectra.
- Time variability: Weather, volcanic activity or changing clouds can make observations from different dates genuinely differ.
Scientists address these issues with repeated observations, multiple wavelength bands, stellar monitoring and models that report ranges or alternative scenarios when the data do not select one unique answer.
How to read a distant-world temperature result
- Identify the target and instrument: spacecraft, ground observatory or space telescope.
- Note the wavelength or wavelength range and whether the measurement is photometric or spectroscopic.
- Check the geometry: secondary eclipse, transit, full-orbit phase curve or a directly viewed Solar System surface.
- Look for the sampled region—dayside, nightside, visible disk, atmospheric pressure level or subsurface depth.
- Read the date, number of observations and any stated sensitivity or uncertainty.
- Ask whether the reported number is a brightness temperature, surface estimate, atmospheric temperature or global average.
- Check which assumptions about gases, clouds and stellar behavior enter the model.
What temperature measurements ultimately tell us
Remote thermometry turns faint radiation into evidence about a world’s energy budget. Infrared radiometers provide thermal intensity, spectrometers add chemical and altitude information, eclipse measurements remove a planet from its star’s combined light, and phase curves show how heat moves around an orbit. The strongest conclusions come from combining these methods across wavelengths and times.
A careful report therefore says more than “the planet is 500 kelvins.” It identifies the observed hemisphere or layer, the wavelength, the observing geometry and the model assumptions. With those qualifications, radiation measured from millions or billions of kilometers away can reveal temperature patterns and changes without a thermometer ever touching the world.
