Scientists map lunar water by combining instruments that detect different clues: infrared spectrometers identify light signatures associated with water or hydroxyl, an impact experiment analyzed material excavated from one crater, and neutron instruments map hydrogen indirectly. These measurements are plotted by location and interpreted with models. The resulting maps show evidence and estimates—not lakes, a complete inventory, or a guarantee that water can be collected.
First, what does “water on the Moon” mean?
The phrase covers several chemically and physically different things. A report may refer to molecular water (H2O), water ice, hydroxyl (OH), or hydrogen detected in a form that could be associated with water-bearing material. These are not interchangeable measurements. A map of hydrogen is not automatically a map of H2O, and a spectral signature associated with hydration does not by itself establish a deposit of ice.
The distinction matters because instruments observe signals, not a label reading “water.” Scientists infer the material responsible by comparing measurements with known signatures and by considering where and how the observation was made. The strength of a conclusion depends on what the instrument can distinguish and what assumptions connect its signal to a substance.
Hydration signatures: water and hydroxyl together
NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s account of the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) describes reflected-infrared features consistent with both water molecules and hydroxyl. In that early work, the broad observation did not reliably separate H2O from OH. M3 principal investigator Carle Pieters explained that “water on the moon” meant water and hydroxyl interacting with rock and dust in the top millimeters of the surface. That is evidence of hydration at the surface, not evidence of lakes or a thick, accessible layer of liquid.

Water ice and molecular water
Ice in permanently shadowed regions and water signatures on sunlit ground are different kinds of evidence in different settings. NASA’s overview describes confirmed ice locations in permanently shadowed regions as well as water signatures on sunlit terrain. A measurement in sunlit soil should not be silently recast as an ice deposit: it may identify molecules or hydration without establishing that water is frozen there.
NASA’s 2020 report on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) described a 6.1-micron feature detected by its FORCAST camera as unique to water molecules. That feature let the researchers distinguish molecular H2O from hydroxyl in their observation of the Clavius region. The result was a local detection, not a Moon-wide average.
How infrared spectroscopy identifies water-related signatures
An imaging spectrometer measures light across many wavelengths. Depending on the instrument and observation, the light may be reflected sunlight or infrared emission from the surface. Materials absorb or emit light differently at particular wavelengths, producing patterns that researchers can compare with known molecular and mineral signatures. A spectrometer therefore helps answer “what material could produce this pattern?” rather than directly weighing a reserve of water.

M3, aboard India’s Chandrayaan-1, measured reflected infrared light. NASA JPL reports that it found features consistent with water and hydroxyl at varied sunlit locations, with stronger signatures at higher latitudes. The instrument made it possible to map lunar water-related signals more effectively, but the broad spectral evidence did not cleanly divide H2O from OH. Its result is best described as a map of hydration-related signatures, not a precise inventory of molecular water at every pixel.

SOFIA: a more specific molecular signature
SOFIA observed lunar infrared emission from above most of Earth’s atmospheric water vapor, which otherwise complicates infrared observations. In the Clavius observation reported by NASA in 2020, FORCAST detected the 6.1-micron feature associated with water molecules. NASA reported a concentration of 100 to 412 parts per million in the observed Clavius soil. NASA compared that concentration to roughly a 12-ounce bottle of water in a cubic meter of soil. Both figures describe that observed area and measurement context; they do not represent a global average, a continuous layer, or a measured quantity available for extraction.
SOFIA also contributed observations used in a broader south-polar map reported by NASA in 2023. NASA described the observatory as retired in that account, so the map should be understood as an analysis of archived observations, not evidence that SOFIA is currently mapping the Moon.
How an impact experiment tests a specific location
Remote sensing can survey large areas, but an impact experiment can expose material from below the immediate surface and analyze what is thrown up. NASA’s Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) deliberately sent the Centaur rocket stage into Cabeus crater near the lunar south pole. About four minutes later, the LCROSS spacecraft passed through the ejecta plume and used its instruments to analyze the excavated material.
NASA says LCROSS detected water and later confirmed that, at some locations, water was present as ice crystals. This provides evidence tied to a targeted impact site and material brought into the plume. It does not turn that one crater measurement into a regional map, nor does it establish that every nearby shadowed crater has the same composition. The method answers a more local question than a broad orbital survey: what was present in the material excavated at this particular place?

How neutron instruments map hydrogen indirectly
Neutron instruments measure changes in the population of neutrons emitted or reflected from the lunar surface. Hydrogen affects those populations, so a neutron map can identify areas where hydrogen is concentrated. But the instrument does not directly identify H2O molecules. Hydrogen could be present in different chemical forms, and the measured signal alone does not settle its exact vertical distribution.
A 2021 NASA Technical Reports Server presentation discussing Lunar Prospector and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) neutron measurements gives an approximate sensing depth of 0.8 to 1 meter for the cited datasets. This is an estimate for those summarized measurements, not a universal specification for every neutron instrument or lunar observation. The presentation also characterizes the regional resolution as coarse.
Turning a neutron signal into “water-equivalent hydrogen” requires assumptions. The estimated abundance depends on assumed lateral and depth distributions and on the chemical form of the hydrogen. Those choices matter: two interpretations of the same signal need not imply the same concentration or location of water. A neutron map is useful for locating hydrogen-rich regions, but it is not a direct map of the depth, form, or recoverable mass of water.

Radar observations, including circular-polarization measurements, have been used to investigate terrain that might contain ice. A radar return is a response of the surface, however, not a chemical assay. The cited NASA technical presentation cautions that surface roughness can also produce radar signals used to infer ice. Radar evidence therefore needs support from other observations rather than being treated as proof of water on its own.

NASA describes LRO as continuing to provide data used to characterize and map lunar resources, including hydrogen. That broad role should not be confused with a single sensor or one definitive “water detector”: different instruments on missions contribute different observations, and each has its own limits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How scientists turn observations into a lunar map
To make a map, researchers associate each observation with a location and display either the measured signal or an estimate derived from a model. The distinction between those map types is essential. A stronger water-related spectral signal is not the same as a direct measurement of recoverable water mass. A hydrogen-abundance estimate is not automatically a map of molecular water.
- Locate the observation. Each instrument measurement is tied to a position on the Moon. Coverage depends on where the spacecraft or observatory looked and what terrain it could observe.
- Identify the measured signal. Scientists determine whether the data concern a wavelength-specific spectral feature, an impact plume, a neutron response, or a radar return. Those signals answer different questions.
- Interpret the signal. Researchers compare spectra with known signatures or use models to translate neutron and radar behavior into an estimate. This step introduces assumptions and possible confounders.
- Display the result with its limits. A map may show signal strength or a relative distribution rather than an absolute amount. Its geographic footprint, resolution, depth sensitivity, date, and interpretation should travel with the map when it is described.
What the 2023 SOFIA south-polar map represents
NASA’s 2023 account says the SOFIA map covered about one-quarter of the Earth-facing lunar surface below 60 degrees latitude, extending to the south pole. SOFIA observed the mapped region in February 2022. This is the footprint of that particular map, not complete coverage of the Moon.
The published visualization showed stronger water signals on shaded, colder sides of craters and mountains. To show how abundance changed across the south-polar data, the researchers compared it with a relatively dry equatorial reference region. NASA’s account says this comparison did not determine an absolute quantity across the region. The map is therefore useful for understanding relative patterns and informing prospecting or mission planning, but it does not quantify extractable water at a proposed landing site.

How the methods complement one another
No single technique is universally best. A spectrometer can identify composition-related signatures; LCROSS analyzed excavated material at a targeted site; neutron measurements can survey hydrogen over broader regions but infer it indirectly; and radar can help investigate possible ice-bearing terrain while remaining vulnerable to roughness effects. Their value comes from combining answers to different questions rather than treating them as interchangeable measurements.

What lunar water maps do not yet settle
NASA says researchers continue to investigate where lunar water came from and how it behaves. Proposed sources discussed in NASA reporting include ancient volcanic processes, comets or asteroids, micrometeorites, and interactions with the solar wind. These are candidate explanations, not settled conclusions. Whether water migrates along the surface also remains an open question in NASA’s account of the SOFIA map.
Maps also do not by themselves answer how much water a particular site contains in a usable form. A regional signal may guide where to investigate, but establishing local abundance, depth, physical form, and accessibility requires evidence at the relevant place and scale. Existing observations support the conclusion that lunar water-related material is real and distributed unevenly; they do not support treating every mapped signal as a ready-to-use resource.
