Scientists detect water on the Moon and Mars indirectly. They measure infrared absorption, hydrogen-related neutron signals, gamma rays, radar echoes, minerals altered by water, and—when a mission can reach the surface—local soil or rock. Each measurement narrows the possibilities, but none should automatically be read as a photograph of a lake. Hydrogen can occur in several compounds, hydroxyl can resemble H₂O in some lunar measurements, and a bright radar reflection can come from rock or dust as well as liquid.
The practical difference is that lunar investigations emphasize surface spectroscopy, hydrogen mapping and planned drilling, while Mars has a broader orbital toolkit that also includes dedicated subsurface radar. In both cases, scientists combine multiple instruments with temperature, geology, season and location before deciding whether the evidence indicates ice, bound water, hydroxyl, hydrated minerals or a possible liquid reservoir.
What “detecting water” actually means
Water is not a single observational category. Scientists distinguish among water ice, individual H₂O molecules attached to grains, hydroxyl (OH), hydrogen-bearing minerals, hydrated salts and liquid water or brine. An instrument usually detects a physical consequence of one of these materials rather than the water itself.

Direct and indirect evidence
- Infrared spectroscopy identifies wavelengths absorbed by molecules or minerals. A matching absorption pattern can indicate water-related chemistry at the surface.
- Neutron measurements detect how hydrogen changes the number and energy of neutrons escaping the soil. Because H₂O contains hydrogen, the result can map possible water-bearing ground, but it cannot identify the compound carrying every hydrogen atom.
- Gamma-ray measurements help determine elemental composition over broad areas and can support interpretations of hydrogen-rich deposits.
- Radar sounding sends radio waves below the surface and interprets echoes from boundaries between layers. Reflectivity is evidence to model, not an automatic identification of liquid.
- Surface analysis and drilling expose material to instruments that can measure its chemistry directly and separate water from hydroxyl or other volatiles.
Confidence rises when independent methods agree in the same place and fit the local geology. A single unusual signal remains an interpretation problem.

How scientists look for water on the Moon
1. Infrared spectroscopy reads the lunar surface
The Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3), flown on India’s Chandrayaan-1, measured reflected infrared light from lunar orbit. Molecules and minerals absorb particular wavelengths, so scientists compare the measured spectrum with laboratory or modeled spectra. NASA and JPL reported absorption patterns consistent with water molecules and hydroxyl in the uppermost lunar soil and rock.
That result does not mean M3 photographed pools of liquid. It means the surface interacted with light in a way expected when water-related molecules are present. Earlier lunar hydration studies could have difficulty separating H₂O from OH. The distinction matters: hydroxyl contains hydrogen and oxygen but is chemically different from a water molecule. Temperature, illumination and the physical state of the surface also affect the measured spectrum.
2. Neutrons map hydrogen beneath the surface
Cosmic radiation constantly interacts with the lunar surface and produces neutrons. Hydrogen is especially effective at slowing neutrons. By measuring changes in the number or energy of neutrons escaping from the ground, an instrument can identify hydrogen-rich areas.
NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter carries the Lunar Exploration Neutron Detector (LEND), which maps the distribution of hydrogen around the Moon. A high-hydrogen reading is compatible with water ice or another hydrogen-bearing substance; it is not a molecular identification. The same measurement cannot, by itself, tell whether hydrogen is in H₂O, hydroxyl or a different compound.
3. Planned rover prospecting adds a local check
NASA describes the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) as a mission that would combine remote sensing with direct sampling. Its Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS) is designed to sense changes in neutrons and infer hydrogen in lunar soil, including below the immediate surface. NASA’s 2023 instrument overview gives a potential sensing depth of up to 3 feet (about 1 meter) in the planned rover context. That is a stated capability, not a result from completed rover measurements.

The proposed workflow illustrates why several instruments are needed:
- NSS surveys an area and identifies a hydrogen anomaly.
- A drill brings subsurface cuttings to the surface.
- The Near Infrared Volatile Spectrometer Subsystem (NIRVSS) examines the exposed material with infrared measurements.
- A mass spectrometer analyzes gases and volatiles released from the sample.
- Scientists compare the measurements to determine whether the hydrogen is associated with water, hydroxyl or another volatile.
Drilling supplies the kind of local chemical evidence that an orbital map cannot provide. It also tests how rapidly hydrogen concentration changes with depth, an important distinction when planning a landing or resource investigation.
How scientists look for water on Mars
1. Neutron and gamma-ray mapping finds hydrogen-rich ground
Mars Odyssey’s gamma-ray and neutron instruments map elemental composition over large regions. Hydrogen slows neutrons, and NASA explains that hydrogen in relevant near-surface Martian environments is often interpreted as water ice. These orbital maps are valuable for identifying broad deposits and seasonal changes, but their spatial resolution and depth averaging mean they do not describe every patch of soil.
Neutron and gamma-ray data are therefore best used as regional context. A suspected ice-rich zone can then be compared with terrain, climate, surface age and measurements from other spacecraft.
2. Imaging spectroscopy identifies hydrated minerals
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) divides visible and near-infrared light into many wavelength bands. It maps minerals whose spectral signatures indicate hydration or alteration by water.

NASA has reported hydrated-mineral signatures on slopes that also show seasonal dark streaks. The mineral signal is a clue about chemistry and geological history; it is not a direct image of liquid flowing down a slope. A mineral may preserve evidence of water that existed long ago, while the nearby surface feature may have another cause. Scientists therefore evaluate the mineral, its location, the season and other observations together.
3. Radar sounding probes below the surface
Mars has two particularly important orbital radar sounders. Mars Express carries MARSIS, a low-frequency instrument designed to investigate the Martian subsurface. NASA JPL describes a 40-meter antenna and an investigation objective reaching to about 5 kilometers; those figures describe the instrument and its intended probing range, not a guaranteed water-detection depth in every terrain.
The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter carries SHARAD, a higher-frequency radar used to map shallower boundaries and ice-rich layers. A radar sounder transmits radio waves and records echoes from interfaces between materials. The strength and shape of an echo depend on electrical properties, layer geometry, roughness and signal processing. Liquid water can produce a strong reflection under some conditions, but ice, rock, dust and combinations of layers can also affect the return.
4. Landers and rovers provide close-up context
Surface missions can analyze soil and rock directly, examine nearby outcrops and relate orbital signals to real material. A rover’s chemical instruments do not replace orbital coverage; they sample a small area. Conversely, an orbital anomaly without a local geological explanation remains uncertain. The strongest interpretations connect both scales.
Can radar prove there is liquid water on Mars?
No. Radar can provide evidence consistent with liquid water, but a bright echo is not proof on its own. In 2021, the MARSIS team reported expanding its analysis to 44,000 measurements collected over 15 years. The additional bright echoes appeared in places so cold that liquid water was difficult to reconcile with the environmental conditions. Jeffrey Plaut, a MARSIS co-principal investigator at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said: “We’re not certain whether these signals are liquid water or not, but they appear to be much more widespread than what the original paper found.”

A 2025 SHARAD reassessment provides a second warning. The target feature was described as spanning about 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) beneath an ice slab almost 1 mile (1,500 meters) thick. Earlier interpretations treated it as a possible buried lake, but the newer analysis favored a layer of rock and dust. Than Putzig, a SHARAD scientist, summarized the stakes conditionally: “If it’s ice, that means there’s lots of water resources near the Martian equator, where you’d want to send humans.” The conditional wording is essential: the reported interpretation was more likely rock and dust, not a confirmed reservoir.
Radar interpretation must account for temperature, pressure, salinity, mineral composition and the shape of subsurface layers. Independent radar passes, mineral data, neutron maps and surface geology can strengthen or weaken a liquid-water hypothesis.
Moon and Mars: the methods compared
| Evidence type | Moon | Mars |
|---|---|---|
| Light and mineral evidence | Infrared absorption can indicate surface water molecules or hydroxyl. M3 observations concern interactions in the uppermost soil and rock. | CRISM maps hydrated minerals and other water-related chemical signatures across the surface. |
| Hydrogen mapping | LEND provides orbital neutron measurements; VIPER’s planned NSS would investigate hydrogen at local scales and potentially to about 3 feet (1 meter). | Mars Odyssey neutron and gamma-ray instruments map hydrogen-rich ground, often interpreted as near-surface ice. |
| Subsurface radar | The methods described here emphasize neutron and spectral measurements, with planned drilling for local confirmation. | MARSIS and SHARAD use radar echoes to examine subsurface layers and possible ice or other reflectors. |
| Ground truth | Planned drilling would expose cuttings for infrared and mass-spectrometer analysis. | Landers and rovers can analyze local soil and rock, while orbiters provide regional context. |
| Main ambiguity | Hydrogen is not uniquely water, and hydroxyl can resemble H₂O in some measurements. | Radar brightness and hydrated minerals do not automatically establish present-day liquid water. |
How scientists turn a signal into an interpretation
When a spacecraft reports possible water, scientists generally work through a chain of tests rather than treating one instrument as decisive.
- Identify the measured quantity. Is the instrument detecting an infrared absorption, a neutron deficit, an elemental abundance, a radar boundary or a surface mineral?
- List chemically plausible explanations. For hydrogen, include water, hydroxyl and other hydrogen-bearing compounds. For a radar return, include ice, rock, dust and layered mixtures.
- Check the physical setting. Compare the signal with latitude, elevation, temperature, illumination, terrain and known geological units.
- Compare independent observations. A hydrogen anomaly supported by compatible infrared, mineral or radar evidence is more persuasive than an isolated measurement.
- Test alternative models. Reprocess data, examine nearby regions and ask whether the proposed material could exist under the measured conditions.
- State the conclusion at the evidence level. Use “consistent with,” “inferred” or “evidence for” when the observation is indirect. Reserve “confirmed liquid water” for a case that actually establishes liquid water.
Important distinctions readers should not miss
Water ice is not the same as liquid water
Neutron or radar evidence for hydrogen-rich or ice-rich ground indicates a frozen or chemically bound source unless other observations demonstrate melting. A map of water ice can be highly valuable for science and exploration without implying a lake.

Hydrated minerals record chemistry, not necessarily current flow
A mineral formed or altered in the presence of water may survive after the water has disappeared. CRISM detections therefore reveal mineralogical evidence and geological history, not automatically an active stream.
Historical brine interpretations remain qualified
NASA’s 2015 discussion of hydrated salts and recurring slope features described evidence then interpreted as seasonal briny flows. That interpretation should be presented historically and alongside later uncertainty; it is not an uncontested demonstration that liquid brine routinely flows on Mars.
What evidence would settle the question more firmly?
For the Moon, a drill sample analyzed by infrared spectroscopy and a mass spectrometer could distinguish water from hydroxyl and characterize other volatiles at a specific location. Repeated measurements at different depths would show whether a hydrogen anomaly is shallow, patchy or continuous.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For Mars, confidence in a liquid-water claim would improve if radar geometry, dielectric properties, temperature and pressure conditions, mineral chemistry and independent observations all supported the same subsurface model. A landed mission capable of sampling the relevant layer would provide stronger ground truth than orbital data alone. Until then, the scientifically responsible conclusion is often that a signal is compatible with water while alternative explanations remain viable.
Bottom line
The Moon and Mars are investigated with the same core principle—measure a water-related proxy, then test it against geology and independent instruments—but their toolsets differ. Lunar work centers on infrared hydration signatures and neutron-derived hydrogen maps, with planned drilling intended to resolve water versus hydroxyl. Mars combines neutron and gamma-ray composition maps, hydrated-mineral spectroscopy and two major subsurface radar systems, plus rover observations. In both worlds, detecting hydrogen, a mineral or a radar reflector is the beginning of the analysis, not the end.
