Scientists usually do not get a date by simply measuring a Homo erectus fossil. They date the fossil itself when a suitable method and sample allow it, or date materials and geological layers associated with it. Then they test whether those dated samples really belong to the fossil’s context. The result is an age estimate for a particular sample, layer, or modeled deposit—not automatically a direct age for every fossil or artifact found nearby.

That distinction helps explain why different studies can report different ages for the same site, and why a chronology may change as researchers add samples, methods, or a better understanding of the local geology.

What does a date at a Homo erectus site actually mean?

A date is meaningful only when you know what was dated and how that material relates to the fossil. A laboratory may measure a tooth, a mineral grain, sediment, volcanic material, or another sample. The resulting estimate applies first to that material. Scientists then use its position and geological relationship to infer what it tells them about a fossil-bearing layer.

For example, a date from volcanic material can constrain a deposit if researchers establish whether the volcanic layer formed before, after, or within the deposit. A date from sediment or an artifact may help place archaeological activity in a sequence, but it is not necessarily a direct measurement of a hominin fossil. Even a fossil tooth that has been dated directly requires assumptions about its history, including how uranium entered or moved through it.

The key question is therefore not just “How old is the site?” It is: what was sampled, what event or time interval does the result constrain, and how securely is that sample connected to the fossil or artifacts being discussed? The Smithsonian Institution’s Human Origins Program puts the purpose plainly: “To best understand how the clues in the archeological and fossil record fit together to reveal the story of the evolution of humans, we need to know the age in Earth’s history when each clue was left.” (Smithsonian Human Origins Program, “Dating”)

How do researchers build a chronology?

Start with stratigraphy and context

Stratigraphy is the study of the order and physical relationships of geological layers. In an undisturbed sequence, a layer’s position relative to layers above and below can establish which deposits are earlier or later. This gives a relative chronology: an ordering of events, not necessarily an age in years.

For that ordering to help date a fossil, researchers need to establish where it lay and how it came to be there. A fossil might have been transported by water, displaced by later disturbance, or re-deposited in younger sediment. A layer can also accumulate over time rather than being laid down in a single instant. At Ngandong, for instance, researchers described the bone bed as accumulating during flood conditions and situated its chronology within a regional sequence of river terraces. Those geological relationships matter alongside the numerical results.

Choose methods that fit the material

No one dating method works for every site. The geology and the available samples determine whether researchers can use volcanic material, tooth enamel, sediment, carbonate deposits, or other evidence. Different methods may date different events; the task is to connect those results carefully to the fossil-bearing context.

Scientists therefore look for independent lines of evidence. A numerical estimate can be compared with layer relationships, magnetic signatures, sedimentology, other dated materials, and a regional geological framework. Agreement between evidence that depends on different samples or assumptions can strengthen a chronology. Disagreement can signal that the context needs closer examination, that a method’s assumptions matter, or that a dated sample does not represent the same event as the fossil.

Which dating methods are used?

Potassium-argon and argon-argon

Potassium-argon (K-Ar) and argon-argon (Ar-Ar) are radiometric methods used on suitable volcanic materials. They can be useful in regions where volcanic layers occur in or around archaeological sequences. The measured material is volcanic, not the fossil; its geological position is what allows researchers to use its age to constrain nearby deposits. The Smithsonian overview describes K-Ar and Ar-Ar among the methods relevant to dating human-origins evidence. (Smithsonian Human Origins Program, “Dating”)

Paleomagnetism and magnetostratigraphy

Some geological materials preserve a record of Earth’s magnetic field when they form. Researchers can compare changes in that record with known reversals in the field to help correlate layers and establish their relative position in a broader sequence. This is paleomagnetism; using changes through a series of layers to establish a sequence is often called magnetostratigraphy.

Magnetic evidence is generally part of a chronology rather than a stand-alone date for a fossil. At Zhoukoudian, paleomagnetic stratigraphy was considered along with cosmogenic burial dating, uranium-series evidence, and sedimentology. The value comes from assessing how those lines of evidence fit together.

Uranium-series dating

Uranium-series methods can be applied to carbonate deposits and, in some circumstances, fossil materials. A complication with fossil teeth is that uranium may enter them after burial, and its movement history affects the age interpretation. If the assumptions about uptake or later migration do not match what happened to the sample, the resulting estimate can be misleading.

A 1996 study reported mean ages from fossil bovid teeth found in hominin-bearing levels at Ngandong and Sambungmacan, but the authors linked the broad spread in estimates to uncertainty about uranium migration histories. Those numbers are historical published estimates, not a timeless age for the hominin fossils or the current consensus chronology.

Electron spin resonance, including US-ESR

Electron spin resonance (ESR) can be used on tooth enamel and other suitable materials. Combined uranium-series and ESR approaches are often described as US-ESR. Interpretation depends on the sample’s radiation history; for fossil teeth, the timing and pattern of uranium uptake are also important assumptions.

That dependence is one reason a method name alone does not tell a reader how secure a particular age estimate is. Researchers need to explain what material was measured and what model of its history was used. The Yunxian report, for example, says researchers checked a closed-system assumption and applied an early uranium uptake model. The reported procedure is a sample-specific assessment, not a guarantee that the same assumption suits every fossil.

Luminescence

Luminescence methods can constrain when mineral grains were last exposed to light or heat, depending on the technique and the material. The result concerns that exposure history, which researchers relate to sediment deposition or another geological event. Luminescence contributed to the Ngandong chronology as one element in a broader set of terrace and fossil evidence.

Cosmogenic 26Al/10Be burial dating

Cosmogenic burial dating uses the relationship between isotopes such as 26Al and 10Be in suitable materials to estimate burial history. At Zhoukoudian, the study applied this approach to quartz sediments and artifacts in the lower strata. It did not describe the resulting number as a direct measurement of the hominin fossils themselves.

Bayesian chronology modeling

Bayesian modeling can combine age estimates with stratigraphic relationships and a model of how a sequence formed. Rather than treating every laboratory result as an isolated answer, researchers can assess how the estimates fit together with the known order and structure of the deposits. At Ngandong, researchers report Bayesian modeling of 52 radiometric age estimates to establish chronology at regional, valley, and local scales.

What do the Zhoukoudian and Ngandong dates tell us?

Published figures make the most sense when read with their samples, methods, context, and publication dates. The examples below are estimates for particular layers or deposits; neither should be generalized into a date for Homo erectus as a species.

Site and published estimate What was dated or modeled How to interpret it
Zhoukoudian Locality 1 lower cultural layers 7–10: 0.77 ± 0.08 million years, reported by Shen et al. in 2009 A weighted mean of six meaningful measurements from cosmogenic 26Al/10Be burial dating of quartz sediments and artifacts. The estimate concerns the sampled quartz sediments and artifacts in those lower cultural layers, not a direct date for every fossil. The authors also considered previous U-series dating of speleothem calcite, paleomagnetic stratigraphy, and sedimentology, and discussed correlation to a range of about 0.68–0.78 million years. (Shen et al., 2009)
Ngandong bone bed: 117,000–108,000 years ago, reported by Rizal et al. in 2019 A modeled age for the Homo erectus bone bed within a regional chronology informed by 52 radiometric age estimates. The study combined stratigraphic and regional context with luminescence, 40Ar/39Ar, U-series, and US-ESR evidence, including non-human fossils associated with the re-excavated site. The interval is a modeled estimate for the bone bed, not a direct age for every hominin fossil. (Rizal et al., 2019)

The figures answer different questions because they come from different sites, materials, and chronological approaches. Zhoukoudian’s result is a weighted mean for measured quartz sediments and artifacts in particular lower cultural layers. Ngandong’s interval is a modeled age for a bone bed, built within a regional terrace sequence from many estimates and several methods. Neither figure should be lifted out of that context and presented as the age of all associated fossils.

Why did Ngandong’s published age change?

A 1996 study reported mean ESR and mass-spectrometric U-series ages of 27 ± 2 to 53.3 ± 4 thousand years for fossil bovid teeth from hominin-bearing levels at Ngandong and Sambungmacan. The paper noted that the range reflected uncertainty about uranium migration histories. The measurements concerned associated bovid teeth; they were not direct dates for the Homo erectus fossils.

In 2019, a regional study used a broader framework, combining stratigraphy and 52 radiometric age estimates across regional, valley, and local scales. It reported a modeled Ngandong bone-bed age of 117,000–108,000 years ago and argued that the extremely young ages previously proposed did not fit the regional sequence. A separate 2011 study of Solo River terraces also addressed the dating history and stratigraphic placement of hominin and faunal material.

This is not simply a case of one technique producing a permanent answer and another replacing it. The studies used different samples, made different assumptions about sample histories, and placed the evidence in different chronological frameworks. A tooth’s uranium migration history can affect its inferred age; a regional sequence can also reveal whether an estimate is plausible in the context of surrounding deposits. New samples or a stronger geological framework can therefore change how scientists interpret an earlier result.

How to read a published age estimate

When an article or museum label gives a number for a fossil site, look for the information that connects the number to the evidence. A useful estimate is more than a date: it has a sample, a method, and a geological argument.

  • Sample: Was it the hominin fossil itself, another fossil, a tooth, sediment, quartz, an artifact, volcanic material, or carbonate?
  • Meaning of the number: Is it a measured age for the sample, a constraint on a layer, or a modeled age for a bone bed or sequence?
  • Context: Is the sample securely associated with the fossil-bearing layer? Could transport, reworking, disturbance, or gradual accumulation affect that relationship?
  • Assumptions: Does the estimate depend on uranium uptake or migration, a sample’s radiation history, or the position of a volcanic layer relative to a deposit?
  • Independent checks: Did researchers compare the result with stratigraphy, paleomagnetism, sedimentology, or ages from other methods and samples?
  • Scope: Does the claim apply to one specimen, one layer, one bone bed, or a wider modeled sequence?

If those details are missing, avoid turning a site estimate into a precise birth date for a fossil. The most defensible wording preserves the study’s scope: name the dated material and say what the published number constrains.

Why can estimates remain uncertain or change?

Dating does not eliminate uncertainty; it makes the evidence and assumptions explicit enough to evaluate. Uncertainty can come from the laboratory measurement, from the history of the sample, or from the relationship between the sample and the fossil. For example, uranium movement complicates some fossil-tooth estimates, while reworked sediment can weaken an inference that a sample and a fossil belong to the same depositional event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Geological sequences can also be complex. A deposit may accumulate during floods, contain material transported from elsewhere, or be divided into layers whose regional correlations are difficult to establish. Researchers may need additional samples, multiple methods, and a better regional stratigraphic framework to refine the chronology. As the Ngandong example shows, a newer estimate can differ from an older one because the evidence and context have changed—not because every earlier measurement was meaningless.

There is no single universal method or complete chronology that applies to every Homo erectus locality. The Smithsonian overview explains several approaches, while the Zhoukoudian and Ngandong studies show how researchers combine site-specific measurements and geological relationships. The appropriate conclusion is always tied to the particular material, deposit, and model that produced it.
