No lunar rover is documented in the cited NASA sources as having entered a lava tube. NASA has studied cave-rover concepts, and its planned CADRE technology demonstration is developing cooperative autonomy that could be useful for future lunar cave exploration. A mission might scout a skylight, lower robots into it, then map underground terrain while managing power, communications and the risk of being unable to return.

Why exploring a lunar lava tube is difficult

A rover cannot simply drive from the lunar surface into a cave. A lava tube is an underground void; access may be through a skylight or pit, and the approach can involve a rim, steep slopes and loose or irregular ground. A mission would first need to determine whether a candidate opening is safe to approach and whether it provides access to a void worth investigating. NASA’s 2012 Spelunker technical report treats skylight reconnaissance and modeling as mission-enabling tasks, rather than assuming a rover can safely descend once an opening has been spotted (NASA Technical Reports Server).

Underground, a rover may lose direct line of sight to a lander or surface relay. That can make it harder to send commands, receive data, determine where the vehicle is, or recover it if it becomes stuck. Earth-based operators also cannot realistically steer every movement in real time: decisions need to be made onboard when communication is delayed or unavailable. Access, mobility, autonomy, sensing, communications and power therefore have to be designed as one system.

These are engineering requirements, not evidence that a particular lunar tube contains resources, ice or conditions suitable for people. The cited material does not establish those properties for any specific cave.

How a cave-rover mission could work

1. Identify and assess a possible entrance

Remote observations can help mission planners identify candidate pits or skylights, but selecting an entrance is only the beginning. Before deployment, a mission would need to evaluate the rim, approach route, slope, rubble and communications geometry. It would also need to establish whether the opening gives access to a void and whether a robot could reach a useful area without crossing an unacceptable hazard.

The Spelunker concept specifically proposes safe landing at a skylight rim before sending equipment down. That ordering matters: landing at the edge of an opening is a separate challenge from descending into it. Reconnaissance and modeling would inform where to land and how to deploy hardware, but the report describes a proposed mission architecture, not an operation already performed on the Moon.

2. Get equipment below the surface

In Spelunker’s proposed approach, a tether lowers a power and communications hub into the cave. Small robots would then explore from that hub, using a combination of driving and hopping. The tether is intended to connect the underground operation to surface infrastructure while providing a route for power and communications. The report does not establish that this architecture has flown or that it is the best solution for every entrance.

Another NASA discussion considers a multi-agent arrangement in which one rover enters a lava tube while surface robots remain available to relay information. It also identifies a fundamental uncertainty: the underground explorer may not be able to return. A mission would have to decide whether its priority is returning the vehicle, retrieving its data, or accepting the possibility of a one-way exploration in exchange for reaching more hazardous terrain (NASA’s CADRE project page).

3. Navigate and build a map

Once inside, a rover would need to estimate its position and movement while identifying terrain it can safely traverse. Stereo cameras can provide 3D visual information about nearby surfaces and help with navigation. More than one rover could collect observations from different positions, giving a distributed system measurements that a single vehicle could not take from the same location.

Ground-penetrating radar can add information about subsurface structure. NASA describes distributed radar observations that could be combined into maps at different depths. Radar and camera data answer different questions: cameras show visible surfaces, while radar can investigate beneath them. Neither, by itself, guarantees a complete map of a cave or proves what lies beyond the sensor’s effective coverage. NASA presents these capabilities as technology relevant to future exploration, not as results from a completed lunar cave survey (NASA Lunar Surface Technology).

4. Share data and maintain a link to the surface

In a cooperative mission, robots need to share position, map and sensor information so that observations from separate locations can contribute to a broader picture. NASA’s CADRE design uses mesh radios to connect rovers with one another and with a base station on a lander; the base station can combine and redistribute information. In a cave, however, terrain can block a direct radio path. A relay rover, a tethered hub or another communications arrangement could be needed to carry information between the explorer and surface equipment.

Power is part of the same design problem. Spelunker’s tethered hub is a proposed way to extend power and communications into the cave. CADRE’s mesh-network approach is a different technology demonstration architecture, not a proven replacement for a tether deep underground. The cited sources do not provide comparative performance data showing that one approach is superior across cave layouts.

5. Decide what counts as a successful return

Before a rover descends, planners need a recovery and data strategy. A vehicle might be expected to climb back out, remain in the cave while transmitting through relays, or complete a limited mission whose most important product is the data already sent to the surface. Each option changes the mobility, communications and power requirements. NASA’s discussion of the possibility that an explorer might not return illustrates why mission success cannot be defined only as reaching the cave interior.

What the proposed systems do—and do not show

System or idea Proposed capability Status and scope
Spelunker Land safely at a skylight rim, lower a power and communications hub on a tether, then use autonomous robots with hybrid driving and hopping mobility. A NASA technical-report concept published in 2012, not a flown lunar cave mission. See the technical report record.
CADRE Three small rovers designed to cooperate autonomously, with mesh radios, stereo cameras, navigation sensors and multistatic ground-penetrating radar. A technology demonstration planned by JPL for Reiner Gamma aboard IM-3 in 2026. NASA discusses cave exploration as a possible future application, not CADRE’s primary destination. The JPL page describes an experiment intended to operate through the daylight hours of one lunar day—about 14 Earth days—not the expected duration of a future cave mission. See the JPL CADRE mission page.
Moon Diver Concept material describes a rover investigating exposed strata at a lunar pit and potentially looking into a connected void. The available source material is insufficient here to support detailed claims about its design or status. Treat it as a concept, not as a lunar cave mission result.

CADRE’s value for this topic is the technology it is designed to demonstrate: coordinated rovers that can make more decisions and share information without waiting for instructions at every step. The demonstration is not itself a dedicated lava-tube expedition. Its proposed lunar operating window and location should not be mistaken for evidence that CADRE will enter a cave.

Why autonomy and cooperation matter

Radio communication with Earth is not a substitute for onboard decision-making. A rover that must wait for ground control before every movement would be poorly suited to uncertain terrain and intermittent links. Autonomous systems can estimate their position, assess nearby obstacles and choose among allowed actions without requiring step-by-step commands from Earth. NASA identifies autonomy and multi-agent systems as useful for risky or inaccessible terrain (NASA Lunar Surface Technology).

With multiple vehicles, each rover can contribute observations from its own position, and the group can share those data. NASA CADRE program element manager Sonny Mitchell described the potential this way: “Multiple small, autonomous robots could cover more ground, potentially helping us map unexplored regions on the Moon.” That is a description of potential, not a reported measurement of cave coverage.

Autonomy does not mean a rover operates without constraints or oversight. A mission still has to define safe operating rules, decide which hazards the vehicle should avoid, and determine what data or decisions should be sent to the surface when communication is available. CADRE project manager Matthew Frost said, “By increasing autonomy of multi-agent systems, we will reduce the number of times when the rovers have to ‘phone home’ to get ground control instructions.” Reducing the need for instructions is particularly relevant where a cave interrupts communications, but it does not eliminate the need to plan for links and data return.

How to compare cave-rover designs

NASA’s sources identify several architectural choices but do not provide enough comparative performance data to name a single best design. The right configuration would depend on the entrance, terrain, mission goals and acceptable risk.

Design question Options raised by the concepts What the choice affects
How does the robot get down? A tethered lowering system, hopping mobility, or another deployment approach. Ability to cross the opening safely, reach the cave floor and handle slopes or rubble.
How does it stay connected? A tethered hub, surface relay rover, mesh network or lander/base station. Whether the explorer can transmit data and receive coordination when the cave blocks a direct radio path.
How does it move? Driving, hopping or a hybrid approach. Navigation over uneven terrain and the ability to approach or retreat from hazards.
How much can it decide on its own? Autonomous navigation and hazard response, with coordination among several robots. How often the system must wait for ground instructions and how it responds to changing conditions.
What can it measure? Stereo imagery, navigation measurements and ground-penetrating radar. Whether the mission can create 3D visual maps, estimate motion and investigate subsurface structure.
Can the explorer return? Plan for recovery, rely on data transmission, or accept uncertainty about return. Mission risk, operational duration and the value assigned to returning the rover versus obtaining observations.

These are linked decisions. For example, choosing a relay-based communications plan affects how the vehicles coordinate and where they can travel; choosing a tethered hub changes how equipment is deployed and powered. The NASA material establishes these as design considerations, not as a tested comparison with a universal winner.

What is known now

The clearest answer is that lunar cave-rover exploration remains a future application of technologies and concepts, not a documented achievement in the cited sources. Spelunker outlines one possible way to access and support robots in a cave. CADRE is designed as a cooperative-autonomy technology demonstration, and NASA identifies technologies such as stereo imaging and distributed radar as relevant to future exploration.

That evidence supports a plausible mission sequence—survey an entrance, deploy equipment, navigate and map underground, relay data, and manage the possibility that the rover cannot return. It does not establish a specific tube’s dimensions, a rover’s expected cave range, mission success rates, or what resources a cave might contain. Those answers would require mission- and site-specific evidence.
