Short answer: oxide magnetic films can reduce energy in specific memory and logic designs by switching magnetism with voltage and retaining a nonvolatile state. They do not yet beat silicon CMOS across complete electronics. Silicon remains the mature, fast, manufacturable baseline; oxide devices are promising where standby power, nonvolatile operation, or specialized spin-based interconnects justify unresolved trade-offs in speed, endurance, reliability, and integration.
What the comparison actually involves
“Oxide magnetic film” is a materials category, not a single device technology. Transition-metal oxides and oxide heterostructures can perform different jobs: convert charge currents into spin currents, produce spin-orbit torque, couple an electric field to magnetic anisotropy, or use voltage-driven ionic motion to change magnetic properties. A fair comparison must identify the material, coupling mechanism, device geometry, and complete read-and-write circuit.
Silicon CMOS is the reference because it is a mature platform with established transistors, interconnects, process control, design tools, and manufacturing infrastructure. Oxide magnetic devices are generally being explored as additions to, or replacements for, particular CMOS functions rather than as universal substitutes for a silicon processor.

Voltage can replace a large switching current
Conventional magnetic switching often relies on a current that generates a magnetic field or spin torque. Moving charge through a resistance dissipates energy and can require substantial current density. Magnetoelectric approaches instead use an electric field to alter a magnetic state. The field may act through electronic charge, lattice strain, or ionic movement, depending on the material stack.

Voltage-controlled operation does not automatically make a system low power. The voltage source, dielectric charging, electrodes, sense amplifier, interconnect, and control circuitry still consume energy. The relevant quantity is the energy of the complete write path, not the energy inside the magnetic layer alone.
A magnetic state can be nonvolatile
A suitably designed magnetic state remains after power is removed. That property can eliminate repeated refresh or allow parts of a system to power down while retaining data. It can reduce standby energy in an architecture that actually exploits power gating; it is not proof that every magnetic device has lower full-system standby power than CMOS.
Spin can carry information between stages
Some oxides are studied for spin-charge interconversion. A charge current can create a spin current, and the resulting spin-orbit torque can influence a neighboring magnet. This enables logic concepts in which magnetic information is written in one module and converted back to an electrical signal for the next module.

Electronic or electrostatic magnetoelectric control
An electric field changes carrier concentration or electronic structure at an interface, altering magnetic anisotropy or another magnetic property. The effect can be fast because it does not require atoms to move through the film. Its practical benefit depends on the strength of the coupling, the voltage needed, leakage through the insulating layer, and whether the magnetic state is stable when the field is removed.
Strain-mediated control
Voltage applied to a piezoelectric layer can create strain that is transferred to a magnetostrictive magnetic layer. The strain changes the preferred direction of magnetization. This approach separates the electrical actuation layer from the magnetic storage layer, so interface quality, mechanical coupling, switching variability, and fatigue become important design parameters.
Magneto-ionic and redox control
In magneto-ionic devices, an applied voltage drives ions, often oxygen ions, or changes the oxidation state at an interface. The resulting chemical change can tune magnetism, coercivity, or anisotropy. Such a mechanism may offer large effects at low current, but ion motion can be slower than purely electronic control and may raise questions about reversibility, retention, temperature dependence, and endurance.

Spin-charge conversion and spin-orbit torque
Heavy transition-metal oxides and oxide interfaces can generate spin currents from charge currents. Those spins exert torque on a magnetic layer, providing a write mechanism. The energy advantage depends on the current required, the conversion efficiency, the magnetic volume, and the surrounding driver circuit. It should not be grouped with voltage-only magnetoelectric switching simply because both use an oxide.

CMOS logic represents information by the electrical state of transistor networks. Dynamic energy is associated with charging and discharging capacitances during transitions; leakage and bias currents contribute to static power. Decades of scaling have produced predictable transistors, dense wiring, fast clocked logic, robust memories, and mature manufacturing controls.
That maturity gives silicon advantages beyond the transistor itself. A CMOS design includes level shifters, clock distribution, sense circuits, error handling, packaging, and software support. Any oxide proposal must either provide those functions or connect to CMOS without erasing its projected energy savings.
Silicon is not uniformly optimal. Refreshing volatile memory, moving data across long interconnects, and keeping inactive blocks powered can dominate energy in some workloads. Those are the situations in which a nonvolatile magnetic element or a lower-energy interconnect could matter most.
What a device-level comparison should measure
| Comparison axis | Silicon CMOS | Oxide magnetic device | What must be included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Write mechanism | Electrical transistor switching | Voltage-driven magnetism, current-driven torque, or a hybrid | Driver transistors, voltage rails, pulse width, and whether peripheral circuits are counted |
| Read mechanism | Transistor current or voltage sensing | Resistance, spin-charge conversion, or a magnetic sensor | Sense amplifier, conversion losses, and read disturb |
| Retention | Volatile logic; memory-specific retention | Potentially nonvolatile magnetic state | Retention time, temperature range, and whether the complete block can power down |
| Switching speed | Established for the chosen CMOS node | Material- and mechanism-specific | Measured pulse-to-state time, distribution, and settling behavior |
| Endurance | Characterized for the process and memory type | Still being established for many oxide stacks | Cycle count, failure criterion, and post-cycling magnetic properties |
| Manufacturing | Mature silicon process flows and yields | Thin-film deposition and integration under development | Thermal budget, patterning, contamination controls, yield, and wafer-level uniformity |
| System power | Measured or modeled for a complete CMOS block | Often reported for a device or proposed architecture | Drivers, wiring, clocks, conversion, cooling, and idle behavior |
A number from one row cannot stand in for the others. A low intrinsic write energy is not a low system power figure if the read path or driver dominates.
What the MESO proposal demonstrates—and what it does not
Magnetoelectric spin-orbit (MESO) logic is a useful architecture example. A magnetoelectric module writes a magnetic state with an electric field. A spin-orbit module reads that state and produces an electrical signal for the next stage. The design aims to combine nonvolatile information storage with electrical interconnects.

In a 2018 Nature paper, the authors reported that their proposed MESO device had switching energy lower by a factor of 10 to 30, switching voltage lower by a factor of 5, and logic density higher by a factor of 5 than CMOS. Those are the paper’s comparison figures for its proposed architecture and assumptions. They are not universal measurements for oxide magnetic films, nor a demonstration that a complete commercial processor would achieve the same ratios.
The comparison boundary matters. A projected device-level or architecture-level estimate may exclude fabrication defects, peripheral CMOS, signal restoration, clocking, thermal margins, packaging, and test overhead. Before using the factors in a design decision, check exactly which circuits and operating conditions the paper included.
Where an oxide device could save energy
Write energy
Electric-field control can reduce the current needed to change a magnetic state. The saving is strongest when the electric field produces a large magnetic response and the write capacitor is small. If the mechanism relies on ionic migration, a low steady current may still require a long pulse, so energy is the product of both current and time.
Standby energy
A retained magnetic state can let an accelerator, cache, register file, or control block shut down without losing its state. The system benefit depends on the power-management policy and wake-up cost. A nonvolatile cell that remains connected to active bias circuitry may not reduce standby power materially.
Data movement
MESO-like concepts target the cost of moving information between logic stages. If a magnetic state can be sensed and regenerated locally, an architecture might reduce some conventional interconnect overhead. The read conversion still consumes energy, and the benefit must be measured across a realistic wire length and fan-out.
Logic density
The MESO paper’s reported fivefold density improvement is a property of its proposed layout and device assumptions. Density can lower energy indirectly by shortening wires, but a denser array is useful only if yield, thermal management, addressing, and error rates remain acceptable.

Speed, endurance, and reliability are unresolved trade-offs
Switching speed
Electronic or strain-mediated effects may be fast, while ion migration and redox reactions can introduce longer time constants. “Fast” must therefore be reported as a measured switching time for a named stack and pulse condition. The European Commission’s 2026 project report identifies switching speed as work still needed for its demonstrated oxide films; it does not establish a general speed advantage over CMOS.
Long-term cycling
Repeated electric-field, mechanical, or ionic operation can change interfaces and gradually alter the switching threshold. The same 2026 project report lists long-term cycling stability and reliability as further work. A credible endurance claim requires a cycle count, failure definition, operating temperature, and distribution across many devices, not a single successful demonstration.
Interface fatigue
A 2024 review notes polarization fatigue at a CoFe/BiFeO3 interface. Fatigue can reduce the electric-field response or make switching less uniform over time. It illustrates why the interface and coupling mechanism must be named; “oxide reliability” is too broad to be useful.
Variability and retention
Magnetic anisotropy, film thickness, grain structure, oxygen content, and interface roughness can vary across a wafer. These variations affect the voltage margin, read signal, and retention time. A design may need calibration, redundancy, or error correction, all of which add area and energy.
Manufacturing readiness: a wafer milestone is not CMOS integration
The European Commission CORDIS project report published in 2026 says the project demonstrated homogeneous oxide thin-film deposition on four-inch silicon wafers using industry-compatible sputtering. That is meaningful evidence that a uniform film can be deposited at wafer scale with a familiar equipment class.

For a production decision, ask whether the magnetic stack is deposited before or after CMOS, what temperatures it experiences, how it is patterned, and whether every added step preserves transistor performance. A four-inch demonstration and a high-volume logic process answer different questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare an oxide proposal with silicon fairly
- Name the exact device. Record the oxide composition, magnetic layer, substrate, interface, dimensions, and whether the device is a single test structure or an array.
- Classify the switching mechanism. Mark it as electronic, strain-mediated, magneto-ionic, spin-orbit torque, or hybrid. Do not transfer a result from one mechanism to another.
- Define the energy boundary. State whether the figure covers only the active film, the write capacitor, the driver, the read circuit, or the whole logic operation. Include pulse duration and operating voltage.
- Separate measured results from projections. Label modeled, simulated, extrapolated, and experimentally measured values. The MESO factors are reported comparisons for a proposed 2018 architecture.
- Check the complete transaction. Count write, read, reset, conversion, interconnect, clocking, and error-recovery energy. A device that writes cheaply but reads expensively may lose at system level.
- Check retention and duty cycle. Determine how long the state survives without power and how often the block can actually shut down. This decides whether nonvolatility saves energy.
- Demand endurance data. Look for cycling results on multiple devices, failure limits, temperature conditions, and post-test distributions.
- Evaluate integration risk. Examine wafer size, film uniformity, thermal budget, process compatibility, yield, and array-level demonstrations rather than deposition alone.
Which workloads are the best candidates?
Power-gated stateful blocks
Controllers, embedded memories, and intermittent systems may benefit when preserving state avoids a lengthy reload after power-down. The gain depends on the fraction of time the block is off and the energy required to restore operation.
Data-movement-heavy logic
Architectures dominated by transfers between logic stages are candidates for magnetic interconnect concepts. MESO addresses this class, but its reported advantages remain architecture-specific and require practical read and write circuits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Specialized spintronic functions
Where spin-charge conversion or magnetic sensing is already required, an oxide interface may provide a useful function that silicon alone does not. The comparison should then be against the complete alternative implementation, not against an isolated CMOS transistor.
General-purpose high-performance CPUs
These remain difficult targets. They require extremely predictable delay, enormous validated arrays, high endurance, tight variation control, and mature design flows. Nothing in the cited milestones establishes that oxide magnetic films currently replace silicon CMOS across such processors.
Common mistakes when reading energy claims
- “Lower voltage” means lower energy. Energy also depends on capacitance, current, pulse duration, and the circuitry supplying and sensing the voltage.
- “Nonvolatile” means zero standby power. Bias circuits, sense amplifiers, leakage, and controllers may remain powered.
- “Oxide” means one technology. Ionic, strain, electronic, and spin-orbit mechanisms have different speed and reliability limits.
- “Wafer-scale” means production-ready. Deposition uniformity is only one step in a qualified process.
- A projected ratio is treated as a benchmark. The 2018 MESO factors are attributed to a proposed design, not a universal measured comparison.
- Device energy is compared with system energy. Drivers, interconnects, conversion, clocking, cooling, and error correction can reverse a device-level advantage.
State of the technology in 2026
The evidence supports a conditional opportunity, not a settled replacement. Oxide magnetic films offer mechanisms that silicon CMOS does not provide natively: electric-field control of magnetism, potentially nonvolatile states, and spin-charge conversion. Those mechanisms could lower switching or standby energy in carefully chosen architectures.
At the same time, the field lacks a current, comprehensive apples-to-apples dataset covering measured switching energy, delay, endurance, yield, and full-system power for oxide devices against silicon CMOS. The 2026 wafer-deposition milestone, the 2018 MESO projections, and the reliability concerns summarized in the 2024 review answer different questions and should not be combined into one performance score.
For now, silicon CMOS remains the practical foundation. Oxide magnetic films are most credible as specialized memory, logic, or interconnect elements integrated with CMOS, especially where retaining state or reducing current-driven magnetic switching is worth accepting additional materials and process complexity.
Decision checklist for engineers
- Is the target problem write energy, read energy, standby energy, data movement, or density?
- Does the proposed mechanism match that problem, and is its time scale suitable?
- Are energy figures measured at the system boundary you care about?
- Is nonvolatile retention demonstrated under the intended temperature and duty cycle?
- Are switching speed, endurance, fatigue, and variability reported for arrays rather than isolated devices?
- Can the film be integrated within the available thermal budget and contamination rules?
- Do the expected benefits survive the addition of CMOS drivers, sense circuits, clocks, wiring, and error handling?
If several answers are unknown, the technology is a research candidate rather than a drop-in low-power replacement. If the answers are demonstrated for the exact workload and process, an oxide magnetic element may complement silicon where conventional CMOS wastes energy retaining state or moving data.
