Origami-inspired rover wheels are not one single flight-proven technology. The term currently covers at least two different ideas: NASA/JPL’s PUFFER, whose folding chassis and wheels make a tiny scout robot easier to package and maneuver, and the Miura-origami wheels demonstrated by the 2023 OriWheelBot research robot, which can change their width while walking on sand. Both show how folding structures can improve mobility, but neither source establishes an origami wheel that has flown to the Moon or been qualified for lunar operations.
The useful engineering lesson is that folding can change a rover’s shape, center of gravity, contact geometry and ability to cope with obstacles. Lunar deployment would still require separate proof under reduced gravity, abrasive regolith, vacuum, thermal extremes, radiation, long distances and mission-specific loads.
What “origami-inspired rover wheel” can mean
Origami engineering uses patterned folds to make a structure compact, compliant or shape-changing. In rover design, that principle can be applied to the vehicle body, to the wheels, or to both. Treating all of these concepts as the same system creates a misleading picture of lunar capability.

PUFFER: a folding scout robot
NASA’s Pop-Up Flat Folding Explorer Robot, or PUFFER, uses an origami-inspired printed-circuit-board chassis. The body folds into a small package, can crouch under overhangs and can lower its center of gravity when climbing. NASA describes the flexible chassis as able to absorb impacts. JPL also reports that the robot’s two treaded wheels fold over the body, allowing the machine to crawl into tight spaces.

PUFFER uses a “skittering walk”: it inches forward one wheel at a time rather than driving like a conventional four-wheel rover. The treads provide grip on inclines, while the folding body and wheel arrangement help it negotiate confined terrain. This is primarily a packaging, access and small-robot mobility solution. It is not evidence that a full-size lunar rover can use the same wheel architecture.
OriWheelBot: a variable-width wheel
The OriWheelBot paper published in 2023 describes wheels built from Miura origami. Their folding pattern allows the wheel to change width, which can help the robot pass between obstacles. The work studies locomotion on sand and identifies two movement modes: digging and pushing. The authors report that pushing sand was more conducive to walking than digging in their experiments.
Variable width is a different function from PUFFER’s folding wheels. It changes the wheel’s contact geometry rather than simply folding a wheel over the body for storage or crawling. The result could help a vehicle fit through a narrow gap, alter its footprint or adapt how it displaces loose material, but the published demonstration remains an Earth-based sand experiment.

Compact transport and deployment
A rover that folds can occupy less volume during launch or landing. The same hinges or crease-like members can then deploy into a larger chassis or wheel. This matters because spacecraft volume, release mechanisms and landing packages impose strict geometric limits. A folding structure can also let several small scouts travel with a larger vehicle, increasing the number of locations that can be examined.
PUFFER illustrates this packaging advantage. Its printed-circuit-board body integrates structural and electrical functions in a flat-folding form. The concept is intended for small-scale exploration, where access to narrow or hazardous spaces may be more valuable than the payload capacity of a conventional rover.

Lowering the center of gravity
On a slope or beside a rock, a tall rover risks tipping. A folding body can crouch, reducing the height of its mass relative to the ground. That does not eliminate the need to calculate rollover margins: wheel spacing, local slope, obstacle height, payload location and traction still determine stability. The fold helps by giving designers another way to change posture without adding a large powered suspension assembly.
Compliance and impact absorption
Rigid wheels and frames can transmit shocks directly into motors, electronics and instruments. Flexible folded members can deform and spread an impact, provided the folds are designed for the expected loads and do not fatigue or jam. NASA’s description of PUFFER specifically notes that its flexible chassis can absorb impacts. On the Moon, however, a compliant structure must also survive repeated thermal cycling, dust intrusion and very low temperatures, so terrestrial flexibility is only an initial demonstration.

Changing contact geometry
A folding wheel can potentially alter its width, diameter, curvature or contact patch. A wider footprint may reduce pressure on loose soil; a narrower shape may fit through a constriction. Changing geometry can also change rolling resistance, steering effort, traction and the stresses carried by the fold lines. Any mechanism must balance adaptability against added joints, actuators, seals, failure modes and control complexity.
How a Miura-origami wheel moves through sand
Miura origami is a repeating pattern of angled panels that can expand and contract in a coordinated way. In a wheel, those panels form a deployable ring. The OriWheelBot design uses that geometry to vary wheel width by as much as 40 percent in the reported experiments.
Passing an obstacle or narrowing
When the robot approaches a gap, it can reduce the wheel’s width so the wheel does not strike both sides of the opening. After clearing the restriction, it can expand again. The practical benefit is not that the wheel climbs every rock; it is that the rover can change its envelope to avoid becoming wedged between obstacles.

Supporting the robot on loose sand
On flat sand, the wheel must generate forward force without sinking so deeply that it simply excavates a trench. A larger or wider contact area can reduce ground pressure, while the fold pattern can alter how the wheel pushes material. The OriWheelBot study examined digging and pushing modes and reported that pushing was more favorable for walking on sand.
Why the wheel does not behave like a conventional tire
A conventional pneumatic tire relies on air pressure and a continuous flexible carcass. A Miura wheel instead uses a structured, articulated surface. Its deformation is constrained by the fold pattern, so the wheel can be lightweight and shape-changing but may have different load limits, contact discontinuities and wear behavior. The design must prevent panels or folds from collapsing under torque and must keep the wheel synchronized with its drive and steering systems.
What happens on rocks, slopes and mixed terrain
Uneven lunar terrain combines hazards that demand different responses. Loose regolith rewards low ground pressure and controlled soil disturbance. Sharp rocks demand clearance, abrasion resistance and protection for motors and folds. Slopes demand traction and rollover resistance. A narrow passage rewards a changing wheel envelope, while a high step may require suspension travel or a wheel-lifting maneuver instead.
Small obstacles
A folding wheel can conform to a limited irregularity or change its width before contact. That does not guarantee climbing ability. The obstacle height relative to wheel radius, available torque, approach angle and local soil strength still govern whether the rover climbs, slips or becomes hung up.
Large rocks and ledges
For a ledge, a wheel’s ability to change width is usually less important than wheel diameter, suspension articulation and torque. A highly compliant fold may absorb a shock but could also buckle if the edge load exceeds its design envelope. A lunar vehicle would need verified load cases for single-wheel contact, diagonal loading and repeated impacts.

Slopes
Traction depends on the shear strength of the soil, the normal force on each wheel and the amount of wheel slip. Lowering the body can improve stability, while treads can increase available grip. PUFFER’s treaded wheels and skittering gait address incline travel at small scale; they do not establish the performance of a larger origami wheel carrying scientific instruments.
How these concepts compare with NASA’s VIPER approach
NASA’s VIPER rover uses a different answer to very soft soil. Its four wheel modules have active suspension and independent steering. The wheels can also be lifted independently and used to dig into and sweep along extremely fluffy soil, producing a swimming-like motion. NASA states a capability of up to a 15-degree incline for VIPER.
This wheel-lifting strategy is not an origami mechanism. It shows that lunar mobility can be improved by controlling wheel motion, suspension and steering rather than changing the wheel’s folded geometry. VIPER is therefore a useful comparison, not proof that an origami wheel has lunar flight heritage.
What the published tests actually demonstrate
| System or study | Reported result | What the result means | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| OriWheelBot, 2023 | Up to 40% wheel-width change; 66.7% load-carrying ratio on flat sand; 17-degree sand incline | Miura-origami wheels can change width and carry a robot during reported sand-walking experiments. | It is not a lunar field test, flight qualification or independent confirmation under lunar gravity. |
| PUFFER, JPL, 2017 | About 625 meters on one charge over a level dirt path; distance varies with instrument use | A small folding robot demonstrated useful terrestrial range and skittering mobility. | It does not predict the range, payload or durability of a lunar rover. |
| VIPER overview | Up to a 15-degree incline; independently lifted wheels, active suspension and independent steering | Controlled wheel and suspension motions can address very fluffy soil. | VIPER does not use the OriWheelBot’s Miura wheel. |
| Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge, 2026 | Five finalist wheel designs installed on 45-kilogram MicroChariot test rovers and run at NASA Johnson’s Rock Yard | Multiple wheel concepts are being compared on terrain designed to expose mobility trade-offs. | Later tests involving lunar-like dust, vacuum, extreme temperatures, longer distances or different loads are described as possible follow-on work, not completed results. |
These figures come from different machines, terrains and test purposes. Comparing the 17-degree OriWheelBot sand result directly with VIPER’s 15-degree capability would imply a common test standard that the sources do not provide.
Why Earth sand is not lunar qualification
Lunar regolith is not simply ordinary sand under weaker gravity. Grain size distribution, sharp particle edges, compaction, electrostatic behavior and the absence of atmosphere affect wheel–soil interaction. Reduced gravity changes the normal load and therefore changes how a wheel develops traction, sinks, shears soil and transfers torque.

A NASA TechPort study of wheel–regolith interactions under lunar gravity warns that terrestrial tests based only on scaled-downforce methods can overestimate mobility when partial-gravity effects in granular material are not represented correctly. Earth sandboxes remain valuable for comparing concepts, but their results require physical scaling, modeling or partial-gravity testing before mission claims can be made.
What a lunar qualification program would need to prove
- Structural strength: Measure fold, panel, hinge and wheel loads for straight driving, turning, one-wheel contact, obstacle climbing and rollover recovery.
- Soil interaction: Test representative regolith simulants across loose, compacted and sloped conditions, recording sinkage, slip, drawbar pull and soil disturbance.
- Partial-gravity validity: Use validated models, reduced-gravity experiments or other methods that capture how lunar gravity changes granular behavior instead of relying only on downscaled terrestrial loads.
- Environmental survival: Expose materials, joints, motors, lubricants and electronics to vacuum, abrasive dust, thermal extremes and repeated temperature cycles.
- Fault tolerance: Demonstrate safe operation if a fold stalls, a panel is damaged, dust increases friction or one wheel loses traction.
- Mission-level endurance: Verify range, energy use, communications, payload protection and recovery procedures over the distances and duty cycles required by the mission.
Until these steps are completed for a specific design, “origami-inspired” should describe a mechanism or research direction, not a lunar certification.
Key design trade-offs
| Design goal | Potential benefit of origami-inspired geometry | Engineering cost or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Compact launch package | Folds can reduce stowed volume and support deployment after landing. | Deployment adds locks, joints and failure modes. |
| Obstacle access | A folding body can crouch; a variable-width wheel can fit through a narrow gap. | Changing shape can reduce stiffness or require additional actuators. |
| Soft-soil mobility | A wider contact geometry may lower ground pressure and alter soil pushing. | Wide wheels can increase steering resistance and may still sink in weak regolith. |
| Impact tolerance | Flexible members can absorb some shocks. | Repeated impacts can fatigue folds, and dust can interfere with moving interfaces. |
| Payload and speed | Light structures may suit small scouts. | Higher loads and speeds demand stiffness, durability and thermal control that small demonstrations may not provide. |
What the current evidence says about working on the Moon
The defensible answer is conditional. Origami mechanisms could help a lunar rover package compactly, lower its center of gravity, absorb selected impacts or alter wheel width. The OriWheelBot results show that a Miura wheel can carry a robot across tested sand while changing width. PUFFER shows how a folding chassis and wheels can support a small skittering scout. VIPER shows a separate way to address fluffy lunar soil through active suspension, steering and wheel lifting.
Recommended Free Tools
None of those findings demonstrates an integrated origami wheel system operating on the lunar surface. The available evidence describes Earth-tested robots, laboratory or sand experiments and terrestrial wheel prototypes. NASA’s own partial-gravity mobility work explains why those results cannot simply be transferred to lunar regolith.
As NASA Johnson robotics engineer Ed Herrera put it, every additional kilometer a rover can reliably travel expands exploration and science possibilities. That goal favors a portfolio of wheel technologies rather than one universal design. Origami-inspired wheels are best understood as one promising set of mechanisms whose value will depend on terrain, load, reliability and qualification testing.
