No-cost EMI is usually not an interest-free loan. The bank still calculates interest on the smartphone purchase, while the merchant, phone brand or shopping platform gives an upfront discount intended to offset that interest. Your scheduled EMIs can therefore add up close to the advertised cash price, but processing fees, GST, a forfeited cash discount, deferred cashback and cancellation or pre-closure charges may increase the final amount.
Before choosing the monthly-payment option, compare the phone’s normal cash price, the exact EMI schedule and every fee shown at checkout. “No-cost” describes a particular promotion, not a universal promise that borrowing costs zero.
How does no-cost EMI work?
In a normal credit-card or consumer-loan EMI, the issuer finances the purchase, charges interest and collects principal plus interest over the selected tenure. A no-cost EMI uses the same basic interest-bearing structure, but another party absorbs the advertised interest through a discount.
The Reserve Bank of India describes the arrangement as follows: “Under no-cost EMIs, the interest charged by the bank is offered as an upfront discount to the customer by the BigTech platforms.” In practical terms, the bank can book an interest-bearing EMI while the merchant discount reduces the amount financed or offsets the interest that would otherwise be visible to you.

The discount may appear immediately at checkout, or it may be paid later as cashback. Croma’s consumer FAQ says the bank-interest amount can be provided as an instant discount or as deferred cashback after 120 business days, depending on the bank’s note. A delayed cashback is not the same as paying less on the day of purchase: you still need enough credit limit and cash flow to cover the billed instalments before the cashback arrives.
A worked example from payment documentation
Razorpay’s documentation uses a ₹15,000 purchase over three months at 15% annual interest. The calculated interest is ₹367.33. After an offsetting discount, the loan principal shown in the example is ₹14,632.67. The bank can still levy GST on the interest. This illustrates why the bank’s accounting may contain interest even when the promotion is marketed as “no cost”. It is an example of the mechanism, not a quotation for every phone or issuer.
Is no-cost EMI really free?
Only if “free” is narrowly defined as the promotional interest being offset and every other condition being satisfied. The total amount leaving your account can be higher than the phone’s cash price because of fees and taxes, or because the EMI promotion replaces a better upfront discount.

- Lost cash discount: A non-EMI payment may qualify for a lower phone price that disappears when you select EMI.
- Deferred cashback: The advertised offset may arrive weeks or months later, subject to the offer’s conditions.
- Cancellation or pre-closure charges: Returning the phone, cancelling the EMI or paying it off early can trigger issuer-specific charges or reverse the discount.
The RBI specifically states: “Processing fee is applicable even if the loan is a no-cost EMI loan.” Its 2024 publication reviewed sample products in which processing fees ranged from 0.4% to 3.2% of the product price and 18% GST applied to the interest charged. Those are observed figures from the reviewed sample, not a tariff that applies to every Indian bank, phone or promotion.

What is the processing fee and GST?
A processing fee is a one-time amount charged for setting up or converting the EMI. The fee can be a fixed rupee amount, a percentage of the purchase, or a stated amount plus GST. Read the issuer’s disclosure rather than assuming that the merchant’s “no-cost” label includes it.
Examples of issuer-specific charges
HDFC Bank’s Cardless EASYEMI page lists a ₹299 processing fee plus GST. The page displays an internal rate of return (IRR) range of 12%–20% for 1 April–30 June 2026 and includes electronics and smartphone categories, subject to customer eligibility and merchant availability.
Federal Bank publishes a 15.99% annual rate for merchant or instant credit-card EMI and 18% for post-purchase conversion, with GST applicable. Its terms include a ₹399 plus GST MyEMI processing-fee example and state that EMI debits contain principal, interest and applicable GST.
Apple India says it does not charge a processing or convenience fee for facilitating EMI or No Cost EMI. That statement does not remove taxes or issuer charges. Apple also directs buyers to check their eligible card issuer’s rules for cancellation, refunds, pre-closure and interest. A promotion can therefore have no merchant fee while still carrying a bank fee or tax.

How GST changes the amount
GST is commonly calculated on services and interest-related charges, not on the phone’s entire product price as a second purchase tax. The exact presentation depends on the issuer. You may see GST on the one-time processing fee, GST on each interest component, or a separate line in the EMI schedule. Do not infer the tax treatment from the rounded monthly EMI; inspect the schedule supplied at checkout.
How much will you actually pay for a phone on EMI?
Use the total payable, not the headline monthly amount. The following calculation keeps each component visible:
- Write down the phone’s ordinary cash price before selecting EMI.
- Subtract any cash-only or non-EMI discount you would lose by financing.
- Record the EMI principal, tenure and the issuer’s stated interest rate or IRR.
- Record the one-time processing or convenience fee.
- Add GST on that fee and any GST on interest shown in the schedule.
- Add the first EMI and every later EMI, including any separate tax line.
- Subtract cashback only if the offer terms make it payable to you and you can meet the timing and eligibility conditions.
Effective cost formula: total of all EMI debits + processing fee + GST and other billed charges − guaranteed cashback. Compare that result with the best price available for paying upfront. The difference is the real financing cost or saving.

Illustrative ₹15,000 calculation
Suppose the phone’s cash price is ₹15,000 and the offer uses the Razorpay example’s three-month structure. The documentation shows ₹367.33 of calculated interest and a discounted financed principal of ₹14,632.67. If the issuer also charges a ₹299 processing fee plus 18% GST, that fee line would be ₹352.82 before considering any GST on interest. The final amount would depend on whether the interest discount is immediate, how the bank bills GST on interest, and whether the phone’s cash-only discount is available. The example demonstrates the method; it is not a universal quote.

Why the first EMI may be different
The first debit can be larger than later debits when a processing fee, GST, a partial-period interest amount or a separate tax line is collected immediately. Check the first-EMI amount, subsequent EMI amount and total repayment displayed on the payment page. A phone advertised at “₹5,000 per month” may have a different first debit and a different total.
What should you check at smartphone checkout?
Eligibility and pricing are offer-specific. A phone can qualify with one card or issuer and fail to qualify with another, even at the same retailer.
- Select the exact model and storage variant. Promotions may apply to one colour, capacity or seller only.
- Choose the payment instrument. Confirm the eligible credit card, debit card, cardless facility or instant-credit product.
- Select the tenure. A three-month offer and a nine-month offer can have different fees, rates and discount values.
- Read the price breakdown. Capture the cash price, EMI principal, interest or IRR, processing fee, GST, down payment and total payable.
- Check the offset timing. Confirm whether the interest discount is instant or deferred cashback, and note the stated payment date.
- Review the first debit. Look for a larger first EMI caused by tax or fees.
- Open the issuer’s terms. Check return, cancellation, refund, foreclosure and failed-payment rules before authorising the transaction.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the order page, EMI schedule and offer terms in case the discount or cashback is missing.
Who is eligible for smartphone no-cost EMI?
Eligibility depends on the issuer, customer profile, merchant and exact product. HDFC Bank lists Apple, Samsung, Sony, LG, Bosch, Whirlpool, OnePlus and other electronics and smartphone categories for Cardless EASYEMI, but availability remains subject to customer eligibility and participating merchants.
ICICI describes no-cost EMI as available only on selected products, with digital approval and flexible tenures. “Selected products” means you should not assume that every phone in a brand’s catalogue qualifies. The final checkout screen is the authoritative test for your account, phone and tenure.

How to compare no-cost EMI with paying upfront
| Comparison point | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cash price | Best price without EMI | An EMI offer can remove an upfront discount. |
| Total EMI repayment | Every scheduled debit | The monthly figure alone hides the final amount. |
| Processing fee | Fixed or percentage fee, before and after GST | “No-cost” does not automatically waive it. |
| Interest and GST | Rate or IRR, interest amount and tax lines | The bank may still book interest and tax it. |
| Upfront cash | Down payment, first EMI and fees | Deferred cashback does not reduce today’s debit. |
| Tenure | Number of months | Longer repayment can alter the rate, fee or eligibility. |
| Eligibility | Exact issuer, card and phone variant | Offers are not universal across customers or products. |
| Returns and pre-closure | Cancellation, refund and foreclosure charges | These can reverse the discount or add a new cost. |
Choose EMI when preserving cash has meaningful value and the documented total is acceptable. Choose upfront payment when its discount produces a lower total, when the fee is large, or when you cannot comfortably carry the instalments until a deferred cashback arrives.
Common surprises and how to avoid them
The advertised discount is not applied
Some offers require a particular card network, minimum amount, seller or tenure. If the checkout page does not show the expected discount before payment, stop and verify the eligibility terms. Do not rely on a banner that is not reflected in the final order total.
Cashback arrives late or not at all
Record the promised date and qualifying conditions. Keep the order confirmation and EMI statement. Continue paying on schedule; a pending cashback is not permission to skip an EMI.

A return does not automatically end the EMI
Merchants and issuers process refunds separately. Ask how the refund will be credited, whether the EMI conversion will be cancelled, and whether interest, GST or foreclosure charges remain. Apple specifically advises buyers to check their card issuer for cancellation, refunds, pre-closure and interest rules.
The phone’s cash discount is larger than the “no-cost” offset
Compare the two prices before looking at the monthly amount. A ₹1,000 cash discount can be more valuable than a ₹367 interest offset if the EMI adds a processing fee and GST.
The EMI is converted after purchase
Merchant or instant EMI and post-purchase conversion can have different rates. Federal Bank’s published examples distinguish 15.99% annual interest for merchant or instant credit-card EMI from 18% for post-purchase conversion. Never assume that converting later carries the same terms as selecting the offer at checkout.
A quick decision checklist
- Have you written down the phone’s best non-EMI price?
- Is the discount immediate or deferred cashback?
- What are the exact first and later EMI amounts?
- What processing fee applies, and what GST is added?
- Does the schedule show GST on interest?
- Are you giving up a cash-only discount?
- Can you meet every payment without depending on future cashback?
- What happens if you cancel, return or pre-close?
- Have you saved the final terms and repayment schedule?
What the published figures do—and do not—prove
Published issuer figures show why there is no single Indian no-cost-EMI price list. HDFC’s ₹299-plus-GST example and displayed 12%–20% IRR range applied to a named Cardless EASYEMI product page and a specific April–June 2026 period. Federal Bank’s 15.99% and 18% rates apply to different EMI routes. The RBI’s 0.4%–3.2% processing-fee range and 18% GST observation came from its reviewed 2024 sample. Rates, fees, taxes, phone prices, eligibility and cashback terms can change after those publication windows.
