Mathematicians prove a major conjecture by turning it into a precise claim, finding a chain of valid deductions from accepted assumptions, and showing that the argument covers every case. The difficult part may be discovering the right route: it can take years and may connect the problem to a different area of mathematics. After a proof is announced, other mathematicians check its definitions, dependencies and reasoning; if they find a gap, the argument must be repaired. Proof assistants can mechanically check a fully formalized proof, but they do not replace the mathematical discovery or the expert explanation of why the result matters.

What does it mean to prove a conjecture?

A conjecture is a mathematical statement proposed as true but not yet established by proof. It might come from patterns in calculations, experiments with examples, or connections mathematicians notice between different problems. Those observations can make a claim plausible and suggest where to look. They do not establish that it holds in every case.

A proof is a logical argument showing that a conclusion follows from stated assumptions and definitions. Martin Andler, professor emeritus at the Laboratoire de Mathématiques de Versailles, describes a theorem’s proof as “a logical sequence that relies on a system of deduction,” in CNRS News’ account of major mathematical conjectures. Once a conjecture has a valid proof, mathematicians can call it a theorem.

That distinction matters because mathematical statements often make universal claims. Checking thousands, millions or even far more examples cannot, by itself, establish a statement about all possible cases. A single counterexample can disprove a universal claim; a proof must rule out every counterexample allowed by the claim’s assumptions.

Definitions and assumptions set the target

Before proving anything, mathematicians need to know exactly what the claim says. They specify the objects involved, the conditions those objects must satisfy, and what conclusion is asserted. These details are not technical decoration: changing an assumption can change whether a theorem is true.

For instance, an argument about every object in a certain class must establish that its reasoning applies to the whole class, not just to familiar examples or a typical case. Definitions also help expose hidden ambiguities: what counts as an object of the relevant kind, and are there exceptional cases that the statement has overlooked?

How do mathematicians find a route to a proof?

There is no general recipe that turns any conjecture into a proof. Mathematicians investigate the structure of a problem, look for useful intermediate claims, and search for connections to results that are already known. The final argument may be organized very differently from the way the original question was phrased.

Break the claim into manageable steps

A proof often depends on definitions, lemmas and established theorems. A lemma is an intermediate result that helps establish a larger claim. Rather than jump directly from the conjecture to its conclusion, mathematicians may prove several supporting statements, combine them, and then show that the resulting chain gives the desired result.

Each dependency matters. If a central lemma has an unstated assumption, does not cover an exceptional case, or has not itself been proved, the larger argument may not establish what it claims. For a difficult proof, checking therefore means examining not only the headline result but also the results on which it rests.

Transform the problem when a direct attack stalls

A productive strategy can be to translate the original question into another mathematical language. A new representation may reveal a theorem, structure or relationship that is difficult to see in the original formulation. In some cases, the useful connection comes from a different area of mathematics rather than from a more forceful attack on the original statement.

Fermat’s Last Theorem illustrates this kind of change in approach. It concerns positive whole-number solutions to the equation xn + yn = zn when n is an integer greater than 2. Andrew Wiles’s route drew on the connection between Fermat’s equation, elliptic curves and the then-named Taniyama–Shimura conjecture about modularity. The strategy was to prove a broader result through that connection, with consequences that would establish Fermat’s Last Theorem. The University of Cambridge’s account of the theorem’s history describes how this approach linked the problem to new mathematics.

This is why a major proof can be difficult even when its eventual statement is short. The challenge may be finding a framework in which known mathematics can do the work, then proving the intermediate results needed to make the connection rigorous. There is no general duration or success rate that can be inferred from one celebrated example; the route depends on the specific problem.

Why can a proof be announced and still need repair?

Finding a promising strategy and establishing every required step are related but distinct tasks. An argument can contain a gap: a transition that has not been justified, a case that has not been covered, or a supporting result that needs more work. That does not automatically mean the main idea is wrong, but it does mean the written argument is not yet complete.

Wiles announced a proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem, and subsequent scrutiny exposed a gap in the argument. He worked with Richard Taylor to repair it. The episode, documented in the Cambridge history, shows why a major result is not settled merely because its author has announced it: the steps have to withstand checking, and a gap must be addressed before the proof is complete. A useful historical overview is also available from PBS NOVA’s account of Andrew Wiles and the proof.

How do other mathematicians check a major proof?

Mathematical papers are written for readers with relevant expertise. They do not normally spell out every elementary inference; some steps are left implicit because mathematicians can reasonably reconstruct them. That convention makes communication more concise, but it also means checking a proof can require interpretation, clarification and sustained work.

For a major argument, expert readers examine the definitions and assumptions, follow dependencies through the lemmas and theorems, and test delicate transitions. They may ask the author to explain a step or prepare a detailed exposition to make a complex argument easier to inspect. The peer-reviewed article “Checking correctness in mathematical peer review” discusses both the convention of leaving some steps unstated and the work involved in checking mathematical arguments.

Peer review is one part of that scrutiny, not a mechanical guarantee that every line is correct. The stages, readers and time involved can vary with the result. Steven Krantz, a Washington University mathematician, described a traditional conception of proof as “something put on paper that has been vetted, verified and confirmed by one’s peers” in The Source’s discussion of the Poincaré Conjecture. That is an attributed description of how mathematical confidence develops, not a rule that every result must pass through one particular journal process.

What a successful check establishes

Checking aims to determine whether the argument is valid under its stated assumptions, whether its dependencies are sound, and whether the reasoning actually reaches the claimed conclusion. Readers may need to distinguish a fixable omission in the exposition from a substantive gap in the mathematics. If a gap is found, the author must supply a valid step, revise the argument, or narrow the claim to what has been established.

Confidence in a major result is thus built through mathematical scrutiny and understanding, not by the announcement alone. The amount of attention a proof receives is not itself a proof; what matters is whether its argument can be followed and its steps justified.

What can a proof assistant verify?

A proof assistant is software that checks a proof after it has been encoded in a formal system. In a formalization, definitions and inference steps are written in a precise form that the system can inspect according to its rules. This can make each encoded inference explicit and catch errors in the formal text.

Formal verification has a bounded role. It checks the encoded argument, not the historical process by which a mathematician found the key idea. Preparing a complete formalization can itself require substantial work, and it does not automatically produce an explanation that makes the mathematics understandable to human readers. The article on correctness checking in mathematical peer review notes that formal checking has not become everyday practice for every published mathematical proof.

A formal proof and an expert-readable mathematical exposition serve different purposes. The first makes the encoded steps available for mechanical checking; the second helps readers understand the definitions, strategy and significance. They can complement each other, but neither should be mistaken for the other, and formal verification is not routine for every major result.

Fermat formalized in Lean: what the milestone means

In 2026, Anthropic reported a Lean formalization project for Fermat’s Last Theorem, and Nature described it as a formalization milestone. The reported project involved a 13-million-line Lean formalization, a figure attributed to the project’s reporting rather than a general measure of proof length. It encoded and checked a proof of an already established theorem; it was not the original discovery of Wiles’s argument. See Anthropic’s project account and Nature’s report on the formalization.

The distinction is useful beyond this example: verifying a result in a formal system can provide an additional kind of assurance about the encoded steps, while mathematical discovery still involves finding a viable approach and establishing its content. A formalization milestone does not mean that the original proof was discovered by the software or that every published proof has undergone comparable formal checking.

What should a reader look for in a claim that a conjecture is proved?

When news reports say a famous conjecture has been solved, the key question is not only whether a mathematician has announced a result, but what has been established and how the argument is being checked. Readers can use the following distinctions to make sense of the claim:

  • Conjecture or theorem: A conjecture is proposed as true; calling it a theorem implies that a valid proof has established it.
  • Evidence or proof: Examples, computations or patterns can support a conjecture, but they do not alone prove an unrestricted general statement.
  • Strategy or completed argument: A powerful idea may point to a proof, but all essential steps and cases still need justification.
  • Announcement or scrutiny: An announcement reports a claimed result; expert checking can expose questions or gaps that need answers.
  • Formalization or discovery: Encoding an existing proof for a proof assistant is a verification effort, not necessarily the process that found the proof.

For further reading on how mathematical discovery can involve proposed solutions, criticism and revision, Cambridge describes Imre Lakatos’s Proofs and Refutations: The Logic of Mathematical Discovery as a dialogue about mathematical problems and methodology. It is a discussion of how mathematical ideas develop, not a step-by-step guide to proving a particular current conjecture.
