Samsung describes Lockdown mode as a temporary device-lock state that disables biometric unlocking, blocks notifications and prevents USB connections. But Samsung’s current instructions are written for Galaxy phones; they do not confirm that Lockdown mode is available on every Galaxy Tab model or software version. Check your tablet before following the phone steps below.
How can I check whether my Galaxy tablet has Lockdown mode?
On your tablet, open Settings and search for “Lockdown mode.” You can also inspect the secure lock settings for that option. Samsung warns that menu names and available settings vary by device and software version, so the phone paths below are not guaranteed tablet directions. If you cannot find the setting, check current Samsung support documentation for your exact tablet model and software version, or contact Samsung support.
Samsung’s documented phone steps are:
- Galaxy phones with One UI 8.0 or earlier: Go to Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Secure lock settings, authenticate, and enable Show Lockdown mode. Open the Power menu and tap Lockdown mode.
- Galaxy phones with One UI 8.5: Hold Volume down and Power together, then tap Lockdown mode. Samsung says “Show Lockdown mode” is enabled by default starting with One UI 8.5.
- Galaxy phones with One UI 9.0 or later: Samsung says holding Volume down and Power activates Lockdown mode automatically. Check the current instructions for your device, since software behavior can change.
What changes when Lockdown mode is active?
Samsung says Lockdown mode disables biometric unlocking, blocks notifications and prevents USB connections. To unlock the device, double-tap the screen and enter its PIN, password or pattern. After unlocking, biometrics work normally the next time the device is locked without Lockdown mode.

Samsung also says five failed unlock attempts can temporarily prevent use of Lockdown mode. Unlock the device correctly before trying to use the feature again.

How is Lockdown mode different from Secure Folder?

Secure Folder is not a whole-device Lockdown state: it can protect selected content while the wider device is unlocked. Samsung’s Australia setup guide says Secure Folder apps and data cannot be transferred to another device and advises keeping a separate backup of important data. That guidance applies to the Australian variant Galaxy devices covered by the guide.
What should I try if Lockdown mode does not behave as expected?
- Biometrics still seem available: Check that Lockdown mode was activated, then unlock with the device PIN, password or pattern.
- Notifications or the Now Bar remain visible: Confirm that Lockdown mode is active. Samsung advises restarting the device if notifications remain visible.
- Lockdown mode is unavailable after failed attempts: Correctly unlock the device before using Lockdown mode again.
- The device locks immediately after you trigger Lockdown mode: Unlock it with the PIN, password or pattern.
These troubleshooting steps come from Samsung’s phone guidance. Tablet menu options and behavior may differ by model and software version.
