Bing exposes the subject and source of its daily image directly on the Bing homepage. On a computer, move your pointer over the image’s headline or caption in the lower-right corner. Bing then shows the basic image information and links for opening a fuller description, taking the daily quiz, or downloading the image when licensing permits.

If you are using the image as a Windows desktop background, note that the desktop wallpaper and the Bing homepage are connected but use different interfaces. The current Microsoft-supported desktop app is Bing Wallpaper, not the discontinued Bing Desktop product.

Find today’s Bing image details in a browser

  1. Open Bing.com in a desktop browser.
  2. Look at the lower-right corner of the homepage image for its headline or caption.
  3. Hover over the headline or the nearby credit information. Bing displays the image’s basic caption and credit details.
  4. Click the headline or caption/credit area to open more information about the image’s subject.

The details may identify a landmark, animal, landscape, event, artwork, or other subject and usually provide links for learning more. The exact wording and available links change with the image and your region.

Use Bing’s daily quiz

Bing also provides a quiz about the homepage image. Move the pointer into the area below the search box to reveal the daily quiz, then select it. The questions often provide additional facts about the image’s subject and may link to related information.

This is useful when the short caption is not enough—for example, when the image names a broad location but does not explain what makes it notable.

Download the image, if Bing allows it

To save the current image, hover over the image headline and choose Download today’s image. That is the current Microsoft-documented command label.

The option is not guaranteed. Licensing restrictions can prevent a particular image from being downloaded. In that situation, Bing may show a link to install Bing Wallpaper instead. The absence of the download command does not mean the image details are unavailable; try opening the headline or credit information.

Look up the previous seven days

Next to the daily image headline, use the < and > controls to browse the last seven days of Bing homepage images. Hover over each image’s headline to see its caption and credit information, or open the caption for the fuller details.

This is the quickest way to identify an image you saw recently but did not investigate at the time. It does not provide an unlimited archive: Microsoft’s homepage controls cover the previous seven days.

If the image controls are missing

  1. Select the Bing settings icon in the upper-right corner of the homepage.
  2. Under Customize your homepage, enable Show homepage image.
  3. If other homepage controls are absent, check the related Show menu bar and Show news and interests settings.
  4. Return to the homepage and hover over the image headline again.

If the settings or image features still do not appear, try a private browsing window, disable an extension that modifies Bing, or sign in from another browser. Microsoft also warns that some Bing homepage features are not available in every country or region.

Identify a Bing Wallpaper desktop background

Windows users may be looking at a desktop background rather than the image currently shown in Bing.com. Microsoft documents Bing Wallpaper as the app that automatically updates the Windows desktop with the Bing image of the day. The app includes a brief description of the image’s location or subject.

Install or open Bing Wallpaper, then select its taskbar or notification-area icon to inspect the current wallpaper information. If you need the full caption, quiz, or recent-image controls, open Bing.com and follow the browser steps above.

Do not search for Bing Desktop as the solution. Microsoft says Bing Desktop has been incorporated into other products and directs users who want a new Bing image on the desktop each day to Bing Wallpaper.

What you cannot reliably do from Microsoft’s instructions

Microsoft’s current support instructions describe browser controls rather than a command-line method. They do not document a supported command such as a PowerShell or Command Prompt syntax for retrieving today’s image details. If you need the official caption or subject information, use the headline, credit, quiz, and seven-day navigation controls in Bing.

The Bottom Line

For the official answer, open Bing.com, hover over the lower-right image headline, and click the caption or credit. Use the daily quiz for extra facts, the Download today’s image command when available, and the </> controls to review the previous seven days. For a Windows desktop background, use Bing Wallpaper rather than the obsolete Bing Desktop.
