Verizon.net addresses are now treated as AOL mail accounts in Outlook. Add the account as IMAP, use your complete Verizon address as the username, and be prepared to enter an AOL app password instead of the password you use for webmail.
The instructions below apply to New Outlook for Windows and Classic Outlook in Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, 2016, and similar current desktop versions.
Before you add the account
Have these details ready:
- Your full address, such as
yourname@verizon.net - Access to the AOL account-security page, where you can create a third-party app password if Outlook requests one
- The Outlook version installed on the laptop
Use IMAP rather than POP. IMAP keeps the inbox, folders, and sent messages synchronized when you also use Verizon.net mail on a phone, tablet, or browser.

Do not assume that smtp.verizon.net or SMTP port 587 is the current configuration. The current Verizon.net/AOL setup uses smtp.aol.com on port 465 with SSL/TLS.

Add Verizon.net mail in New Outlook for Windows
- Open Outlook.
- Select View > View settings. You can also select File > Account info if that option is shown.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts.
- Under Email accounts, select Add Account.
- Enter the complete Verizon address, including
@verizon.net, and select Continue. - When Outlook asks for a password, enter the AOL app password and select Done.
If this path does not match your screen, you may be using Classic Outlook rather than New Outlook. Close or switch Outlook and follow the Classic Outlook instructions below.
Add Verizon.net mail automatically in Classic Outlook
- Select File > Add Account.
- Type your full Verizon.net email address.
- Select Connect.
- If Outlook asks for a password, paste in the AOL app password. Do not automatically use your normal Verizon/AOL webmail password.
- Select OK and then Finish when Outlook reports that setup is complete.
Automatic discovery may select an incorrect provider or create an account that looks complete but cannot connect. If that happens, remove the failed account and use manual IMAP setup.
Set up the account manually in Classic Outlook
- Select File > Add Account.
- Enter your full Verizon.net address.
- Select Advanced options.
- Check Let me set up my account manually.
- Select Connect.
- Select IMAP.
- Enter the following values:

- Select Next.
- Enter the AOL app password and select Connect.
- Select Done after the test succeeds.
Enable outgoing-server authentication if needed
Some Classic Outlook account dialogs expose additional settings. If receiving works but sending fails:
- Select File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select the Verizon.net account and choose Change or open the older detailed account dialog.
- Select More Settings > Outgoing Server.
- Check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
- Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Save the changes and test by sending a message to yourself.
Use the full Verizon.net address for outgoing authentication and the same AOL app password used by IMAP.

How to create the AOL app password
Outlook may display a message such as “Please create an app password for Outlook on your email provider’s site.” This means the ordinary webmail password is not accepted for this third-party mail connection.
- Open your AOL account-security settings in a browser and sign in.
- Choose the option for app passwords or Create and manage 3rd-party app passwords.
- Create a password for Outlook or another mail application.
- Copy the generated password exactly.
- Paste it into Outlook when it asks for the account password.
Use that app password for both the incoming IMAP account and the outgoing SMTP server. If you generate a replacement app password later, update the saved password in Outlook as well.
Fix common Verizon.net Outlook problems
Outlook keeps asking for the password
- Confirm that the username is the entire address, for example
alex@exampleis not sufficient; usealex@verizon.net. - Check Caps Lock and paste the app password again without adding spaces.
- Use the AOL app password, not the regular webmail password.
- If the webmail password was recently changed, create a new app password and enter it in Outlook.
- Check that the incoming server is
imap.aol.comand the outgoing server issmtp.aol.com.
Outlook never shows a password prompt
In Classic Outlook, make sure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is not selected. SPA can prevent Outlook from displaying the expected IMAP password prompt.

- Open Control Panel.
- Search for and open Mail.
- Select Email Accounts….
- On the Email tab, select New.
- Enter your name, Verizon.net address, and password, then select Next and Finish.
Receiving works, but sending does not
Open the account’s outgoing-server settings and enable SMTP authentication. Choose Use same settings as my incoming mail server. Verify that SMTP uses smtp.aol.com, port 465, SSL/TLS, the complete Verizon.net username, and the AOL app password.
The inbox is empty or folders are missing
Check that Outlook added the account as IMAP rather than POP. POP downloads messages to the laptop and does not provide the same folder synchronization across devices. If the wrong account type was added, remove it and add it again using Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually > Connect > IMAP.
There is no incoming mail
Look at the bottom of the Classic Outlook window. If it says Working Offline, select Send/Receive > Work Offline to reconnect. Then select Send/Receive All Folders.

Remove and re-add the account
Removing an Outlook account removes its offline cached copy from that Outlook installation. It does not delete the Verizon.net mailbox or messages stored on the mail server.
New Outlook
- Select View > View settings.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts.
- Find the Verizon.net account and select Manage > Remove.
Classic Outlook
- Select File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select the Verizon.net account.
- Select Remove and confirm.
After removal, restart Outlook and add the account manually with the IMAP values above if automatic setup previously failed.
FAQ
Is Verizon.net an Outlook.com account?
No. Verizon.net mail is handled as a third-party AOL/IMAP account. Add it as an IMAP account rather than selecting Outlook.com, Microsoft 365, Exchange, or Verizon Yahoo.

Why does my normal Verizon password fail in Outlook?
AOL may require an app password for third-party IMAP access. Create one in AOL account-security settings and use it in Outlook for both IMAP and SMTP.
Should I use POP or IMAP?
Use IMAP if the mailbox is used on multiple devices. It synchronizes folders and message status, while POP primarily downloads mail to one device.
What are the current outgoing Verizon.net server settings?
Use smtp.aol.com, port 465, SSL/TLS, the full Verizon.net address as the username, and the AOL app password.
